IIRC there is a tn member who has been gassed in this countryMany on here will of course know her
You’re right, 'twas me.
Now I don’t know and will probably never know the details of what was done and how, but I can tell you what happened from my perspective. It was others at the time who suggested gassing.
I parked in Huntingdon Industrial Estate one night in the summer of 2003 - the really hot one. This was before aircon was standard so I had the roof cracked pretty much permanently, but the windows closed at night. The wagon concerned was a little 4 series Scania P Cab and I was a self-catering tramper, so by the time you’d put all my kit in there wasn’t much room left for air!
Anyhow, to get to the point, next morning I slept through three alarms then eventually woke up an hour late with a stinking headache and an odd, solvent-y/chemical-ly type smell in the truck which lingered for days afterwards. When I got out to check, the seal on my box had been removed and the doors opened (I didn’t have a lock at the time). There were obvious signs of rummaging about, but the load was just cartons of bobbins for a weaving company, so not worth taking. At the time I was a very light sleeper, but I didn’t hear or feel a thing. Oh, and just for the record, I’m teetotal.
Make of that what you will. As I said, we’ll never know for sure, but it’s got to make you wonder…

Which is quite close to what our medical expert suggested.
Ether is an extremely pungent agent and a relatively weak anaesthetic by modern standards and has a very irritant affect on the air passages, causing coughing and sometimes vomiting. It takes some time to reach unconsciousness, even if given by direct application to the face on a cloth, and the concentration needed by some sort of spray administered directly into a room would be enormous.
Lucy has written the only reasonable explanation of what happened to her, it isn’t one of those invisible untraceable substances that most drivers have mentioned days after the event. As mentioned by someone, if this is so common, why has there been no prosecutions or deaths.
Like most of the threads on here ,the one’s who “know” the most are the ones who it as never happened to.
Tis True. I have never set foot on the moon but I do know it isn’t made of cheese.
If the load was just bobbins why would anyone mess about near the cab when they could see what was on the load by opening a door and move on to bigger things.

Yeah yeah, you trot along now and believe all the stories that drivers make up. Yes cabs get turned over and often the driver sleeps through it, but scientific evidence is all I need to know that gassing is a load of bull.

Oxides of Nitrogen have a “footbath” smell to them. You get these from spark arcing and incomplete combustion of things like night heaters & Aircon units The electric arc is the key ingredient here. By contrast, Camping gas stoves are more likely to produce purely Carbon Monoxide, which having no taste or smell is far more likely to result in one not waking up at all.
Nitrogen Dioxide/Monoxide that immediately turns into dioxide on contact with air will give a real hangover style headache. Even an aircon system with poor electrics can produce these gases in small quantity, but small quantity is all it takes.
I’ve NEVER heard of any oxide of nitrogen other than N2O “laughing gas” being “administered” by an assailant however - so I’m inclined to blame faulty gear rather than dodgy geezers…

^^^^^ this
Old boss of mine, an experienced owner operator claimed to have been gassed but im still not convinced as after drowning his sorrows at the port he missed the next boat as well as the 1 he arrived late for initially
And no cases or reports of the tongue muscles relaxing and chocking the victim of gassing.
So Mr Know it all (or knows ■■■■ all) Toby and others, how would your superior knowledge of ALL things or of the following explain this:-
At 0020hrs we ■■■■■■■ the small ship I was skipper of at Parkade in Rotterdam and was due to leave again at 0530 to go further up river to another berth, the ship was (I thought ) secured against the many scumbags who roam around there at night.
One of the deckhands at 0500 spent 25 minutes trying to wake me. When I finally awoke I had the worst headache I had ever had, I struggled to get out of bed and on my way past my wardrobe I SHUT THE DOOR and went through to my dayroom to get dressed. Just inside the door was where I always kept my camera which was no longer there. On looking around (bearing in mind my head was still pounding) I noticed that all drawers and cupboard doors were slightly open, After dressing I went back to the wardrobe and discovered my wallet missing from my coat which had about £600 in it, about €30 and two mobile phone were gone as well. Two laptops that were on my desk were not touched. Also to note was that my cabin door was not locked.
I went out on deck where I found the mate slumped on the rail with his head in his hands also with chronic headache, he lost his wallet passport and €250, his cabin was also unlocked but the three Filipino sailors who always locked their doors were fine and had nothing stolen.
I reported the matter on the VHF radio to the port authorities who notified the river police who advised me to stay where we were and officers would attend this they did within 10 to 15 minutes, by this time my head had cleared and I felt fine and so did the mate.
During the interview (by two offices) I was asked how I felt so on explaining the headaches of two of us they called their medical team and another two people arrived shortly afterwards. A medical examination was carried out and blood samples takes, the doctor, his colleague and the two police all said that we had been gassed with something and the toxicology report would determine what with. Was also told that the reason the laptops were not taken was so nothing suspicious would be thought of when they walked away from the ship, everything they nicked could be concealed in their pockets.
I later received a written report from the police but it was in dutch (as would be expected) and as soon as I can lay my hands on it I will scan it to here for all you knowledgeable people to read (if you can that is) and then say gassing does not happen and never has. Unlike the British gestapo the dutch police take seriously the crime that goes on around the harbours and river berths and investigate accordingly.
The name of the ship I was on was called m.v. Ardent and the incident took place during the second half of March 2010 and it was a ‘dry ship’ ie. no alcohol onboard !!
Assuming we’re arguing seperate iissues entirely, I’ll have a go.
The seperate issues here are “How easy is it to deliberately gas someone for robbery purposes when inside their own cab already asleep” and “How easy is it to administer gas to an entire area, so everyone around is apparently a victim” which is what the account posted above would seem to indicate.
I’ve suggested it is very hard to adminster a gas to an individual behind closed doors as it were. I stand by that.
It IS however VERY easy with the right chemistry to administer a noxious gas over a wide but contained area, such as downstairs inside onboard a ship which is described.
If I were police, I’d treat the following as attempted murder by the way, so serious a threat to life that it is.
Here’s how it could be done, as per the account above:-
H2SO4 + HCOOH (both household chemical liquids, colourless, and low odour)
Stick 'em in a kettle (which is near where you might find one of the liquids to start with!) and leave it to boil. Once boiling, Carbon Monoxide is produced, which being colourless and odourless itself would be an UNDETECTABLE noxious gas amongst the steam coming out of the kettle. It looks to anyone standing around as if the kettle has just boiled that’s all.
Now, the Guy described ON DECK would HAVE to have been INSIDE to have been exposed to this of course. Likewise, anyone ON DECK throughout, likely those with their doors locked if you’re an untrusting fellow like me, then they’d escape unscathed.
Exposure to carbon monoxide causes chronic drowsiness, and death if the gas doesn’t start to disperse before fatal blood saturation has been reached.
Since the easiest sources of the chemicals described are going to be somewhat less than “conc” variety, the reaction would soon be done, and the kettle would just be boiling residue water some way before the kettle actually boiled dry. The kettle would of course also need to be of the type that does NOT switch off when boiling. Neither liquid would destroy the kettle in the process of boiling either, assuming the kettle is standard whistle-when-done type made of stainless steel/aluminium.
A blood test would pick up high concentrations of carboxyhaemoglobin in the blood, which makes the blood look a lot redder than usual. The bone marrow would recycle new blood to replace this knackered blood over the course of the following weeks. Expect continued sleepiness in the meantime, although the headache should cease within 48 hours, given lots of fresh air and normal food & drink intake.
Needless to say but the mate was sleeping in HIS own unlocked cabin, not mine (lol) and like me awoke after a struggle with an horrendous headache which cleared within minutes of exposure to bracing Dutch air at half five on a frosty March morning. Two other ships were targeted on Parkade that morning as well but only found this out later. I will add that many other times I have woken with a blinder aided by duty free Scotch but definitely not on that occasion.
On reflection, At the time I was more ■■■■■■ off with the gear I had lost and I thought gone forever, or the value but was more than presently surprised a few days later to receive an envelope from the vessels owners containing 20 pound notes to the value of the stolen goods and the owners/managers were Coastal Bulk Shipping of Hoo, Rochester and not far from you Winseer (they have since ceased trading).

I’ve no idea. You’d have to ask them that, not me!
You’re wasting your time Lucy, some people would not believe something it it went up and bit them

I dont know how they did it, but when I pulled for John Mann I was gassed in Rabat, Morrocco, and my wallet emptied,
I reported it to the police who just shrugged and laughed at me, and told me to be careful where i parked.![]()

it was an old jedi mind trick dont park next to the millennium falcon next time !
YOU don’t need to see his DCPC card. These are not the drivers with the descaler & battery acid from the pi key yard workshop you are looking for.
I can’t explain the theft of the small stuff, but when did you last have your ship fumigated. I believe they now use aluminium phosphide tablets or carbon tet which we played with at school. It was great fun to lock the physics teacher in the prep room after someone had pinched the stopper off the CT flask
I have carried a lot of dodgy stuff in road barrels and have more than once taken an unhealthy lung full while getting a sample or when venting the tank. I don’t recall losing more than a few seconds of my day having a good cough and spit.
This has been an old and lengthy discussion on Trucknet over the years. In all that time I still haven’t seen any new or better evidence that there are roaming gangs who are trained in chemical warfare with the supplies at their disposal.
If I found something that worked that well I would probably target a Group 4 cash lorry or a Brinks Mat type vehicle rather than a lorry driver who may have a full load of wooden pallets on board or 26 pallets of Andrex.
One cash lorry job should see me to the end of my natural

Carbon tet was used to charge fire extinguishers years ago.Not as nasty as a degreasing tank full of this stuff could be as I remember at least from the point of view of knocking anyone out.The rule where it was used was generally that one person had to wait outside the tank room for the one who went in to use it with just enough time allowed to drop or collect whatever was needed in the tank and then out again. As for robbers possibly using Trico somehow to knock out victims who knows but it might fit the descriptions.
