Game over

I had to do an over night job down to Whitley Bay last year, what a zb hole.I was last there 30 years ago and it was great then.Went to Weatherspoons but couldnt get any thing to eat due to the language bar.Had to go to Greggs and just point at things.

Getting back to the OP, is there only me who thinks that the roads might just be a smidge safer with one less “licence holder” who can’t do something as simple as obey road traffic regulations?

(If OP wasn’t to blame for getting the points, please accept my apologies :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: )

No arguments from me, I was speeding. Was pushing to get back to base before I ran out out of hours. (weekly rest and incidentally my last day with that firm)
Then the courts cocked up so I missed out on a FP and got stung at court.

Sounds like this is the thing that has finally spurred you into the decision you wanted to make anyway. I’m the same, half of me hopes that I’ll fail the medical in August so I can get on with buying my narrowboat this year instead of next. I’ve been driving a truck for over 25 years and while I have had some fantastic times in the job, particularly in the days of continental work, the novelty really has worn off now. I just want to cruise around the northern canal network doing 3 mph next.

I’m sure that when I do go, whether that’s this year or next, and whatever I do, I still won’t ever be as sanctimonious and holier-than-thou as one certain earlier poster, and the roads will be a smidge safer. :stuck_out_tongue:

Ezydriver,
my basic is £31.84 x 35 hrs = £1114 per wk x 4 =£4457.60 a month
and we are paid 13 times a year . = £57948
No doubt someone on here is going to say I’m bull shtting and they earn more .
I’ve shown my pay slip in previous posts to prove people that I don’t bull sh
t about wages.

That’s not the Tesco store technician job is it?

In our local rag this week there’s a big advert for trainee engine drivers on Freightliner earning after training up to £47000 a year, wish I was young again……. Wonder how much time you get to do a walk around check on one of them.

Ossie

On the canal Harry,no.more average speed cameras,Audi/Bmw drivers.

Heard about that freightliner job.

Also heard that you have to agree in advance to be relocated if necessary which put me off looking any further.

No it’s not tesco wages , the wages for a in store technician was £18000 pa, Like I said I only took the tesco job to get me out of trucking , it was only used as a stepping stone until I found something better , it’s virtually impossible to get to a interview while you truck driving .

When i gave up truck driving 5 years ago to look after my kids it was a huge relief as i hated the long unsociable hours etc for a below average wage…

then last year i decided to get a part time job and i was willing to do anything, so i looked and looked and filled in countless online job applications and finally got an interview for a shelf stacker at a supermarket…i didnt even get that job !! :open_mouth:

so grudgingly i phoned a few driving agencies and one snapped me up and now im back driving again and i can say that some of the night shift jobs stacking shelves were advertising the same per hour rate as im on just now !!

im just glad im only part time as i coudnt handle full time again and ive yet to speak to a driver who isnt moaning about one thing or another !!

Truck driving is a way of life and totally different to any other occupation and regardless of the points you will be back driving sooner than you think

Never a truer word spoken in jest.
3 months dealing with the ■■■■ that is called jobcentre, I’ve arranged to go back on the road again. Containers.

Yes I am weak

Whilst I don’t have to go to jobcentres, my non driving contract recently finished, so I too may have to consider sitting in a truck cab again. Many non driving jobs are trying it on with the £6.31 hour lark (NMW) now. Booger that eh?

Semtex, what did you struggle with? And its a serious question, did you find it hard to match your pay, or you never had the skill sets for other jobs or what exactly?

Yeah, lets console ourselves with that fact. After all you just never know the minute when your trundling down the motorway day after day !!

It was the lack of experience in anything other than driving that was the main thing. Fair play to the jobcentre, they sent me on a couple of courses but it didn’t help.

The worst thing about being unemployed is not the lack of money (although, yes I have struggled with that) but the sheer boredom.

Nah …no thanks been there and never again…youtube.com/watch?v=zJAeb0wiQjA

I got out just over 2 years ago. Still drive trucks of a fashion, but its a very small part of the job, and out of the 6 shifts I have this week I have driven the truck once for a total of 1hour.

I managed to land a job on railway maintainance and have worked up from part time operator on a zero hours contract to a full time trainee linesman job. The starting basic is more than I have ever earnt on the road, and after training will be in the region of what the train drivers earn. Added into this we are supplied with all the ppe, have a company van, fuel card and credit card, all digs are paid for by the co, all training is paid for and we get paid to do it. Plus a nice xmas bonus(£500 last year), end of year bonus (£5000 last year) bank holidays paid at double time plus day off, paid minimum of 12 hrs regardless of how many we do (current job is about 4hrs door to door from hotel, last week booked 62 hrs, but only worked 40). Plus with the amount of new electrification planned, theres a good 15yrs of steady work ahead, then it will all need maintaining so good long term prospects.

Downsides are mainly night work, being away from home alot, fridays nights are the only guarenteed night off.
