I know what I hope will happen, but very much doubt it will.
I think we all know what will realy happen, Nothing!!
Are you refering to the alledged blockades set for 14th sept■■?
Only heard about this on the talksport news last night but nowhere else seems to have picked up on it
Theres talk of revoking the o licences of anyone taking part so i dont think many will now so looks like the £1.50 a litre is not far away.
It would be far better to boycott one fuel company for at least a week possibly more if they feel it in their pockets they will lower prices, theres no way phoney bliar is going to lower the tax on fuel hes struggling to make ends meet as it is.
There may be talk of revocation of O’licences and criminal proceedings against people who are involved with blockades. But it ain’t illegal to not got to work. Should trucks not go out of the yard one day, all trucks, I wonder how long it would take for government to listen?
they wont change the fuel duty rate, whatever they do. the government needs the revenue for the things we all take for granted(health service, police, fire, ambulance etc), so if they cut fuel duty, income tax, vat or both may increase dramatically.
the best thing i can think of is having a fixed amount of duty per litre, which increases with inflation annually.
another reason blair and his cronies wont reduce duty is that they wont have enough money to give to africa and will not look good in frount of his master george bush.
I bet bLair and Brown and rubbing their hands together with glee at the moment. All the extra TAX that they have flooding in will no doubt be used to sort out the fact they have got their sums wrong. Then of course they will start blaming everyone else for the fact that inflation will shoot up, interest rates will go up, no-one has any spare cash and the whole house of cards falls in on them, when everyone goes bankrupt due to the vast amount of credit we all have.
I would tend to agree with Roadhog, although I can’t see it happening as it is to sensible for politicians to look at. As for the blockades - hope not, last time it was a right pain getting out of Kingsbury !!

I can see it now…
me - I’m protesting about fuel prices so I’m not driving today.
Gaffer - don’t be stupid
Me - I’m serious
Gaffer - ok, one minute, hello helping hands agency? I need a driver, thanks. Doors that way Steve…

AND FUNDING THE HEALTH SERVICE IN CAMBODIA AND FUNDING 80% FOR THE EUROPEAN MONETARY FUND FOR SPAIN. Did you know that Britain Is one of the BIGGEST contributors to thiS fund to bring Spain upto Scratch in its development. This will soon stop and Britain will then fund one of the newer member countries such as Poland/Malta. Thats Y Blair needs the revenue.
and I will also state that if they want to take your o licence off you then let them. Because sooner or later you will loose it, you get into bad repute, be disqualified in trying to make ends meet. I.e Bankruptcy/Drivers hrs/rules and regs not being obeyed.
The trouble with this country is that we dont STAND UNITED. One mans troubles is not the next as long as he is not affected. We need to take a leaf out of the French to have any impact. If everyone stopped, the country is knackered but we need to do it together. If Vosa wants to rebuke everyones O licence let them cos the job aint worth a carrot as it stands. I wouldnt be blackmailed. Its your livelihood

That’d go for me too - we’ve got more angency than staff as it is, so one more won’t be any bother.
I think we’d all like to do something, but as yet I’ve not seen anything that’s going to work…
Yeah so fuel tax is high we all know it.
but What made me laugh last time though was that it was farmers moaning the most.
Yet they can run their tractors on Red, dont have to have road tax and dont have to MOT anything other than their car. (which nine times out of ten is a not very old Discovery, Range-Rover or Subaru Forester)
They rarely if ever get bother about missing or non working lights and number plates, odd number plates, grossly overloaded trailers, bald tyres, excess smoke, dangerously exposed parts (like the big spikes for shifting bales!)
One example is you have an Artic with a flatbed trailer, the brakes are shot, the chassis is rotten and the lights dont work so it fails it’s MOT for being unsafe. So a farmer buys it, chops the unit chassis in half and welds a tow hitch on it then loads it up with 30 ton of hay bales?!
Our fuel prices are rising, ellegidely as a result of the effects of Hurricane Katrina and the fact that 9 US refineries are out of action. Europe is exporting petrol and diesel to the US by the tanker load so depleting our stocks. The Government should reduce the tax burden on fuel or reduce the tax levy and charge the yanks for the shortfall by selling them the european fuel at a premium price. Not sending them our fuel to sell it at their prices so they can preserve their cheap motoring privelege.
Another thing when the oil price rises on the international markets our fuel prices at the pump rise immediately, what people seem to miss is that oil was bought on the oil futures market three months ago, probably at much lower prices, so again ythe oil major are profiteering by not passing on the saving until they have to re-purchase at the new prices.
Its always us as Transport drivers and private motorists that pay through the nose.
I dont think we sending them ‘our’ fuel cheap.
It’s more a case that essentially fuel as a comodity is auctioned off to the highest bidder, whilst we talk about ‘european stocks’ it’s more a case of buying capacity from our refineries.
Basically the Americans still drive pointlessly gas guzzling heaps and as a nation they’re rich so they out bid everyone else and push the price of oil up.
The stupid thing is although they drive cars with big engines (2.0ltr is small, 1.6 is very small!) they dont actually produce a lot of power! For years they were producing 4ltr V8’s with 200bhp when we and the japs were making 2.5’s and 2ltrs with the same power!
It’s not that protests don’t work it’s more the British, in general, are not very good at it! We have all sat in pubs or at work etc hearing the moans & groans about the price of this ,that & whatever but thats all that we ever do… moan!
The mass protests against the Poll Tax showed that it can be effective, even the non turning PM had a rethink We need to look at the French who are the world experts at protests/blockades & their government (is forced to?) looks after their interests… not doing so would have them out of office quick style.
As far as I’m aware they are still defying the EU order concerning the imports of British beef. Not because of fears from mad cow desease but to protect their own farmers!!!
Why have we got a government that wants to be seen as “everyones friend” & the “good guys of europe” while neglecting it’s own population when the French have a prime minister who says this…
“The suddenness of the fuel crisis in the US has caught Europe unawares. Several countries were preparing yesterday to release emergency stocks of petrol. The EU has 168 million barrels of supplies. Dominique de Villepin, France’s Prime Minister, said yesterday that he would offer French consumers financial compensation to help them to cope with fuel price rises. “We have entered the post-oil era,” he said.” (source business.timesonline.co.uk/artic … 63,00.html)
Compensation? it’ll be a cold day in hell before we hear Blair utter those words.
While I recognise that things have to be paid for surely the elected government has a duty to those who elected it first, with others coming second, not the other way round?

Yahoo! News Report picked up on it earlier this evening.

Sorry to drift O/T but this one made me smile
On another site I regularly exchange banter with a friend who’s a yank freak (me being a jap freak & part time import dealer) … I bought a 5.7 Tpi Transam earlier in the year & couldn’t wait to tell him how sad it was for a 350 cu. inch lump - probably about the same power as a NON turbo skyline that I won’t buy because they’r etoo sluggish
5.7 litre V8 = 240bhp
3 litre V6 GTO/TT 280bhp but only because the Jap govenment forced the manufacturers to limit the domestic market to 280 (in reality nearer 320 )

but What made me laugh last time though was that it was farmers moaning the most.
It was for the simple reason that the people who buy the produce off the farmers have got it sussed.
We recieved a letter from our milk buyer yesterday saying that our collection charge would be going up due to the diesel price increase. A friend got a similar letter from his grain buyer. We get no say in that, its either pay or your goods will not be collected. Now obviously this doesn’t get passed down to the haulier, so the middle man is creaming the profits again. Yes the farmers are moaning, and if you think it’s that good you can have our farm cheque book and have a go yourself. The profit most farms make is a lot less than most haulage firms.
If the farmers hadn’t started the last protest, we would have been over the £1 a litre make along time ago.
Funny how,on my way back to Caen,in France last Saturday,at the end of my holiday,I felt terribly guilty about filling my car to the lid with diesel at 1.06euros per litre,(71.9ppl) and the thought that I was depriving Gord Broon of the much needed revenue for his coffers…
NOT.
Ken.
Diesel in this area has gone upto 99.9p
