I was thinking last night about the increasing number of fuel thefts from HGVs.
It seems it is too costly, or impossible to physically protect a tank of fuel. However, it should be possible for the truck or a third-party system to monitor the fuel level in the tank when the engine is not running. If such a system were to detect the fuel level decreasing, it could alert the driver/company and/or start a video camera to catch the people doing it.
It all seems too simple. Surely such a system would be cheaper than £1000s of fuel going missing.
Fitted one of these, aint fool proof but a good deterant and i hope enough to get them to move on.
Thought about making my own using level sensors but this plan has problems.
It would for instance need take into account fuel slop.
Plan 2 was to use pir but again there problems, passing vehicles, air lines flapping in th wind ect.
Plan 3 was magnetic field but then the above system came on the market.
I am connecting it to a cammera so i can record on activation.
if they want it then they will take it no matter what what you fit. i know firms that have fitted anti syphon devices to there trucks only to find that doesnt stop em, 1 firm fitted a camera and a sensor light at the rear of the cab too deter them and that didnt work as they just smashed it up. (the light and camera not the truck, they bust the bottom of the tank took what they could n let the rest run).
I dont agree with an alarm because the driver would no doubt get a crow bar wrapped around his head if challenged.I think they should put a tank inside a tank and see if that helps or i would put the tank between the chassis and move air tanks etc to the space where the tank is currently. Then box it all in like with them thick catwalks and box it in underneath.

Haha, I had the exact same idea last year, then found out some one had already invented a gadget to do the job.
Any way these days I try to park up with less than a quarter of a tank of fuel, weve had drivers parking up just after filling the tanks, then having them drained over night, which makes me think you could be targeted while filling up your vehicle.

If you’re parked up in a layby, the fuel slop from wind against the side of the trailer should be minimmal. In a tank say, 50cm in depth, the slop might be 4-5cm but you set the dectetor to read 10cm+ which would mean you’d have to park on level ground, up no kerbs, and then not get blown around too much by either the wind or passing traffic.
Hope you don’t mind me commenting on your feed. I work for Trucksecure and thought your comments were interesting.
We looked at sensors in the tank but it was very expensive to do and when you start putting electronics in fuel it opens a big can of worms. Also looked at PIR’s but it caused too many false alarms as you rightly say.
Regarding the camera, the Trucksecure has 4 inputs for extra security devices plus a clean contact relay which you can wire your camera into. So if the system activates the camera will switch on.
