Fuel tanker driver shortage

lolipop:
I do not agree with filling “jerry cans” BUT people like my Son, who has enough fuel in his tank, needs to fill “jerry cans” with fuel for his gardening business, ie mower -strimmer etc etc. With panic buying, its not the best time to be seen filling cans,he feels uncomfortable doing it, but what other choice does he have.

If he pulls up in a van with sign writing, advertising his gardening business, I doubt he gets much trouble, and can easily explain it.

If he runs a "gardening business " on the cheap, cash in hand, from his car, than he might get some abuse :grimacing:

What is Class 1 tanker work actually like? Am I naive to think you could start at 5am in the morning and finish at 4pm? Obviously it depends on the company. Wincanton/Valero and Hoyer are two names down my way. Hoyer have terrible driver reviews.

Conspiracy Theory:

The Fuel Tanker drivers are actually on all-out strike, like during the Winter of Discontent, but the government has covered it all up with a press blackout, and spun the news…

Drivers seen idle walking around at places like Thurrock Fuel Depot

Been out for hours and days, and not seen one single fuel tanker delivery taking place anywhere among my usual haunts for the past six days…

News are concentrating on the Public dealing with this “Crisis”, rather than what’s actually being done about it:
(Sound-boarded already for “Green Godess” solution, implying that the government really knows it ain’t gonna be over in a few hours or days yet…)

Reports of Emergency vehicles being turned away, but strangely no Fuel Tankers who couldn’t get through, because Biffa Bacon and Sassy Sassenach are having a punch-up at some forecourt over a broken bumper/wing mirror/sense of pride

I’m thinking the “Idle Drivers @ Depot” are in fact on bloody Picket duty! - Anyone got any up-to-date info with live footage from such scenes?

There’s an opportunity to make some real news here, and it would appeal to both disgruntled Tory voters and Leftists alike, as it threatens to bring the government down should it actually be TRUE that the Tories are knee-deep in their very own winter of discontent AFTER all…! :bulb: :bulb: :open_mouth:

Turn up in a marked van “garden business” should be acceptable?

Or, 2 people, one starts up a chainsaw and keeps guard?

As you say it depends on the company. No fuel tanker driver that delivers to retail sites will do nights out as companies want the vehicles back so they can run 24/7.
Start times on day shifts are usually between 4-6am, but drivers tend to start between 2-4am to avoid traffic or having to be delivering during busy times.
Work is normally planned for a 10 hour shift if working 5 days, 12 hours if doing 4on 4off. This consists of usually 2, sometimes 3 deliveries, depending on how far from the terminal you are going. The vast majority of deliveries are full loads, so it’s load at terminal, deliver all fuel on board then back to the terminal to load for the next delivery

Only problem with advertising on his van is certain types of individuals see it as a target for cheap tools even if theres none in it. At 6.4 and ex riot trained copper dont think it would come to needing a bodyguard.

Don’t panic help is on its way!

These vehicles are all up to date for bottom loading, vapour recovery and Trading Standard approved calibrated meters I presume. :stuck_out_tongue:

To be honest a picture of the 20 cars behind the tanker would make it more believable that it actually happened.

It’s a cool story though

Is Hoyer really that bad or is it loud online moaners. I don’t mind 12/13 hour days if it’s 4 on 4 off. I refreshed my ADR back in 2017 but never really used it. Wincanton are also hiring, they have the Texaco work.

It looks like a pretty crap job to me. You can’t sit in cab while you unload, you have to be there and standing and looking at the hose or w/e, can’t have your phone out or eat or read a book (obviously can’t SMOKE either lol) just stand there until it’s done, cold, rain, wind - don’t mater. An hour or two, who knows? Probably cameras all around the truck, tiny crammed day cab with nowhere to stretch your old legs. Then back to yard to refull for the next run which probably involves lots of standing around again. Have to wear those overalls hi viz, probably spend way more time waiting at the site and forecourts (outdoors) than actually driving. I wouldn’t do it even for £20 p.h. unless we run out of diesel and start getting sent home with no pay. Then I might consider getting ADR and looking for a temp job on the tankers to help out but not long term.

Yes. He also does a drag act on weekends - he’s “Glamourous Gladys”

Do you live in Northampton?

If only, one of their lads posted his wage slip on here a few years ago when they were on strike…and getting lots of grief here from the usual green eyed suspects for daring to want to better themselves :unamused: …the shift pattern wouldn’t be out of place at one of Stalin’s labour camps (Gulag), cruel would be an understatement.

I’ve only seen 2 tanker jobs in the north east Hoyer and Wincanton and a couple of garages only letting you fill up a wagon with £35 that’s madness and the petrol forecourt association saying delivery’s should be prioritised in the south east is a micky take

Petrol forecourt association they’re avin a diversionary larf.

As opposed to the real news fuel station tank stores have been deliberately reduced from what was an already laughable 40%, to 20%, at which point the supply chain obviously couldn’t sustain the same demand as before. No surprise there.
This is the real reason why it’s happening. The government intends to force the change to EV’s and Boris doesn’t mean 2030.
They obviously don’t want to be left with loads of full tanks when they all turn off the fuel station pumps for the last time.
Tanker drivers are obviously under a gagging order or lose their generous redundancy terms so as to protect the motor retail industry and economy from the resulting crash in fossil fuelled car values.

Strange how we seem to supposedly have so many anti fossil fuel voters backing Boris and Ed Davey but who don’t seem to want to buy and run an EV and swap out their domestic gas boiler to go nuke and biomass fuelled all electric at 26p per kwh + taxes.

Filling his VAN and needing fuel in jerry cans to refuel his machinery as it makes it easier from a can, nothing to do with running a business from the back of his car
