Hi all,
I think fuel cards are waste of money, the best thing is pay at pump via debit card. If all could share spots in UK where this service is available I would much appreciate it.
In USA majority fuel stations have this service.

DO NOT TRUST THE SYSTEM!
Paying by debit card is easy, you can use any retail fuel station, but you will find it a PITA as they will want proof of payment before you fuel, so you’ll have to specify an amount which they will take off your card prior to fuelling.
That happens in Italy a lot.

no they dont have used my card several times i present card and fuel up they dont ask how much i am filling up
or they will only give 50 litres at a time as a bunker site at basingstoke does.

Shell A14 at Orwell Bridge, Tescos HGV pumps at Copdock and Morrisons HGV pumps at Sproughton all accept DC payments after filling…

Now that surprises me, so you fill your 1000ltr tanks and then go to pay and the card is refused, what happens next
I know one thing, if I was running a fuel station there is no way any lorries would be getting anything in their tanks until I had proof of payment first
It happened once at Tesco’s. I had to fill in there version of a 7 day wonder.

I used to fuel my wagon up quite a lot on my credit card and not once did they make any attempt to pre-authorise the transaction, I simply handed the card over and they started the pump.
Presumably if it was a problem they would no longer do this so I think it’s safe to assume it isn’t an issue.

The problem I can see here is that the fuel card price is always about 4 pence cheaper per litre than the pump price at the cheapest main road filling stations- normally Shell- and around 10 pence per litre cheaper than motorway prices.
Four pence a litre might not sound like much but it’s £173.50 over the course of a month- more than enough to pay for some promotional rulers.

Maybe it’s geographical, but anytime I’ve filled a lorry up on a credit/debit card I’ve had it pre authorised before fuelling, a lot of bandits around in my old neck of the woods, it seems in other parts of the country it’s different
One place I worked, drivers had company credit cards. I used to fill up at BP’s for the premier points. Could fill a card in a week.
They were laid back with the cards as well. I would get fuel, ■■■■, pop and food for the day while in the garage, and the company were fine with that.

or it could just be your face
Never had a prob using a D/C, in fact one Shell Garage I go to says no need to hand a card over, just fill up the truck and then come in and pay, blimey charlie

You could have a point there, although they would’ve struggled to see it under my balaclava
If you have a cheap garage near you can make sense on a credit card as you get longer credit terms plus if you have one that offers cash back or air miles you have something back.
I almost exclusively use debit/credit cards though do have fuel cards for back-up. I can also say never had card swiped like at a hotel for a long while but have a few times here and there in the past. I would say I save over fuel cards but would say it is a bit of a faff to do so with searching out the cheapest places you can get under the canopy.
In terms of cards not going through I would think lorries are much lower risk of eventual non-payment than cars, particularly if the garage was switched on enough to get the details off the operators disc in the windscreen as well.
It’s a bit of a problem these days having back-up payment when you fill up the car. I used to probably always have enough cash on me to pay for a full tank if a card was declined for whatever reason but now it’s knocking on for £100 a tank.
There are benefits to filling up on debit/credit cards, But the biggest problem i can see is the VAT.
Can’t you get billed minus the VAT off most fuel card companies?
No you pay vat no matter what only thing is you get one nice invoice per week from a fuel card rather than a load of separate receipts from garages.
If you fill up abroard a lot of the euro cards offer a vat recovery service as I believe it can be hard to recover it as an individual.
