Fuel cards -waste of money

kr79:
If you fill up abroard a lot of the euro cards offer a vat recovery service as I believe it can be hard to recover it as an individual.

That’s what i was thinking of. Just suprised they can’t do it on their home turf.

i find for me i cant beat the credit card as i go to different places every day, looking for key fuel type places that have sometimes shut down, and going out of the way sometimes to find them, for the extra paid at normal pump price its well worth it plus i get longer terms than fuel card.

Harry Monk:
The problem I can see here is that the fuel card price is always about 4 pence cheaper per litre than the pump price at the cheapest main road filling stations- normally Shell- and around 10 pence per litre cheaper than motorway prices.

I had fuel cards too and would only use my credit card if it was financially advantageous to do so. For example Morrison’s often did 5, 6 or even 15ppl money off vouchers that I got given when I did our weekly supermarket shop which I always made sure to use (in theory they were 100l max but a few times I was allowed to get the amount off 200+ litres), but there was also a period of a few weeks a couple of years back where the supermarket price was actually cheaper than the fuel card prices. Add in to that cashback on your credit card and promotional points offers (for example Morrison’s Miles are worth 1ppl off as you get a £5 store voucher every 500 litres), and sometimes even if the pump price is slightly higher than your fuel card it is still overall better value.

One place I worked, drivers had company credit cards. I used to fill up at BP’s for the premier points. Could fill a card in a week.
They were laid back with the cards as well. I would get fuel, ■■■■, pop and food for the day while in the garage, and the company were fine with that.

firm i’m with was like that till a newish driver decided too spend £3000 on the card one weekend then not return too work, he posted all the cards back then did a runner with the goods (leather sofa and 2 chairs). that ended the rest of us having company credit cards.

A guy I used to drive with only ever used his credit card. We could buy fuel anywhere we needed it when we needed it. No wasting time hunting for somewhere to take a fuel card. I got reward points and he got his cashback.

One of the supervisors paid for his new conservatory on one. £21,000 worth. The company were fine with it when he explained. He had to pay it back at £400 a month though.
The cards had £30,000 limits on them. So we could pay for digs, emergency plant hire and casual labour.

just been into my local morrisons to fill the pick up (early start in morn) and there was a eddie stobbart tractor unit on the pump.was wondering if he was on keyfuel or genie?? awfull lot of miles points filling one of those

You won’t get morrisons points if you use Keyfuels or UK fuels !

Big Joe:
Never had a prob using a D/C, in fact one Shell Garage I go to says no need to hand a card over, just fill up the truck and then come in and pay, blimey charlie :open_mouth:

There are several (BP) stations round here that don’t require you to present your payment card before filling up. e.g. A14 (both sides)at Kettering, A5 Southbound at Hinckley, A6003 Corby. Although one or two who used to be OK now require a card up-front (e.g. A5 Northbound at Hinckley). As others have said, maybe it’s a geographical thing?

I think it depends on pump location and cctv or anpr, I would never hand over a credit or debit card these days though.

But some stations won’t play ball with that, so I hand over one card, then when they give me the card back to pay I swap to a second card that I use to buy fuel with. That way if the first card is illegaly scanned while I’m filling up, the PIN I eventually use for the second card will be of no use.

Sometimes I leave a fuelcard for security but ask to swap when paying. They don’t like it, but you can’t please everyone!
