its really not as simple as that. The UK isnt their only destination and believe it or not, not all EE’s would want to live in the UK anyway. A flat there alone would likely need a £1K deposit and maybe a months rent in advance, thats a few months wages to some of them for a start…
Which is also why all those on here harking back to the good old days running to the Middle East/Europe are, as usual, talking out of their arses when it comes to comparing those “hero” days to modern day issues. Economics is clearly a weak point when it comes to facts.
Some of these EE lads are slaves when on these shores, they have little money, are paid a pittance and cannot just walk away.
I do honesty have sympathy for them, however some really don’t help themselves and sadly that’s when the impact occurs, lots of stories about EE drivers ignoring yard rules, not speaking the language, shoving papers in people’s faces with a grunt and no idea of the reply.
I must admit that I would be annoyed by ignorance, I can only speak for myself but whenever I went abroad I made some effort to learn a few phrases besides “cerveza”, one of the first things I learned when needed. in Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese and Greek was “ I’m sorry I don’t understand”, you’d be surprised how many times that drew a response involving either asking someone else, a pen and paper or the person in question trying in English just to help but not getting annoyed because at least I tried.
I don’t buy the “choice of earning a living” thing either.
We had a really good polish lad at our place from an agency, he was late twenties with good English and a great attitude but he explained that the jobs on offer in Poland were for working away 4/5 weeks with a week off and paying about 50% more than usual polish HGV wage but many didn’t want to be away. He came to the uk with a view to a permanent move so was using an agency to hopefully get a foot in the door.
I’d back AndrewG to the hilt with his take on EE drivers but I think if he spent 6 months over here his understanding of some drivers views might be more easy to see? Technology is improving but it’s still clearly a licence to take the utter ■■■■ if you have the right number plate, but that’s what happens when cultures clash.

Oh dieseldog: Pawns get used in a game, Prawns get used in a sandwich. Hate to be picky but I was giggling too much to take in what you were trying to say.

This is a bit of a about face thread, most of the other threads slate the EE drivers to death.
But it’s cases like this that these EE drivers want to better their lives by whatever means and that usually means taking what we class as low paid driving vacancies in the uk.
I’m away for 3 - 5 weeks at a time, and one thing I can say about some of them is they don’t like to see a driver on their own, even if they are a different nationality, many a time I’ve been offered a coffee or beer while I’ve been weekended, and they wouldn’t think twice of offering you a bowl of stew or soup on a cold day.
And be the first to get out of his cab to watch you back or help out while Billy Brit sits on his arse or films you to post on u tube
Your spot on about them getting out to give help ,seen it loads of times with them lads ,don’t see them sitting in cab filming a lad struggling they are out helping and watching into a tight space ,everyone is entitled to make a living ,remember one thing it’s a free world we live in .fair play to them ,when in Europe they are the same at rest areas out and about watching out for each other and others .id like to see the majority giving out about them head off to a foreign land and do what they do. They wouldn’t be able
