Ive recently started on fridges.and luckily i havnt had to park up when loaded yet.but you do get a bit of a stare when i pull up to park somewhere…I did have a load of frozen on the other day.and i turned it off for an hour.and in that time it had gone from -22 to -10.so over night it would thaw if it was turned off.No way. Take it from me, it wouldn’t thaw if you turned it off overnight. If you are running at -25 and you turn the fridge motor off for 9 hours then you will be looking at a temperature of -8 when you turn it on in the morning.
And that’s the box temperature, not the core temperature. After 15 minutes of running the box will be back down to -25, and if you probed the load after the fridge had been off overnight it wouldn’t have changed by even 0.1 degrees.
But it depends on the outside temp though Harry, winter or Summer .
And the integrity of the box insulation.
I used to work on fridges and the drivers do get used to the noise. If youve a good trailer you can turn them off but sometimes you cant, especially with some of the things you carry, like fresh chicken or fish. Just deal with it and get on with life, theres more important things to worry about than the sound of a fridge chugging away.
Im now on curtains and havent pulled a fridge in over 2 years but as soon as one parks next to me i start to feel sleepy, the noise of the fridge tends to ‘help’ me sleep somehow.
The load that i had on,was only 6pallets of frozen,so i pulled the internal load door down, maybe the sensors are taking the tempreture from the whole trailer and not just the frozen bit.
most of our work is fresh chicken,so i wont be turning it off,but i wouldn,t park near anyone unless i had to.

Actually this is true. Even in summer you can leave your fridge off over night and although it may say -1 at switch on it will go to -18 in minutes meaning the load has only lost a few degrees C. Like H Monk said, its only the air temp that has gone up to -1 deg. I park up at about 5PM and leave freezer on full blast till 7.30PM then switch off for the rest of the night.
Consider how long it takes to defrost a domestic freezer with the door open and everything taken out. Still takes ages to defrost, so a trailer or box with doors shut and full of solid frozen goods is going to take days to defrost.
I will always try to park away from others when my fridge is running but this is not always possible, as I am responsible for the load financially/insurance wise then the fridge is set to my customers order and stays that way.
I stopped at Watford Gap services last Saturday (16/6/12) at around 11.30, as I was 2 hours early for my booking time at about 12.00 a driver in an un-written white Mercedes with an also un-written blue tautliner parked next to me (There were several bays empty in fact most of the truck park was empty). The driver went to the garage got a drink etc and came back to his truck, upon finishing his purchases deposited the rubbish on the floor.
About 5 mins later he asked me to turn off the fridge as he wanted to get some sleep eg 30mins, I told him politely that I wouldn`t turn it off to which he retorted with a stream of abuse (WTF ■■?) I pointed out that I had been there for quite a while before him and asked why he parked by a fridge if he wanted some sleep and got another load of abuse for my trouble before he left and started with the hand signals on his way.
So can those of you calling for fridges to be turned off actually give a good reason for it when you are prepared to put up with all the other s@#t that is dished out to us on a daily basis that you just take and say sweetFA about.
p.s I hope moron got home ok last week without the 30 min extension to his working day
The only time I turn mine off will be for a 45 min break.
Most customers don’t bother with the thermograph print but the occasional one does.
I find fridge driver pretty cool when talking with them and they never seem cold when considering where to park,
All I ever pull is fridges. i quite like the noise overnight, reminds me I’m not at home and to not wet the bed as I share a unit. My firm has its units and trailers both tracked, and if the fridges/freezers drop the needed temp then it sets of an alarm and then after 15 minutes then sends the details to the office. I’d rather be woken up by the Thermo King then the sound of this w****r that does the night shift and thinks he knows it all ringing me up telling me what I already know.

It’s not worth risking having your load refused just because of a few politics with sensitive boys not being able to get some kip. Go and buy some sleeping tablets and you wont hear a thing. You don’t go into a depot and ask them to turn off the 24hr operation because the noise of the factory is stopping you sleep do you. Yea sorry mate can you turn the power grid off for this entire industrial estate so I can hear my ■■■■■ while pulling one off. Get real, we are in the transport business. If you can’t do with noise then get an office job where you can leave someone a post it note to not leave the computer running on your lunch as the fan is noisey.
