Explain to him that, more than likely, if he is running at -25 and he turns the fridge off for 8 hours kip then he is probably looking at a box temp of about -10 by the morning and a load temp of maybe -20 or so…
See if he goes for it.
This is true. The air temp may drop a bit, but when you turn the fridge back on it gets down to correct temp in minutes especially in this weather. There is no need to run a fridge overnight. I only run mine cos it drowns out noise and helps me sleep. And cos I know running it will make someone cry and post a moan about it on these forums again
I realise msa s are not that big but isn’t possible to have a marked fridge area at one end of the service area, then anyone who parks there who should nt can’t whinge if a fridge turns up.Personally, Im not to bothered as I plug in my ear plugs or leave the radio on overnight.
Is there many or any places that have separate parking for fridges ? I remember that big truckstop at West Brom M5 junction 1 used to have segregated parking but obviously it’s well gone now.
I am a fridge driver by the way.
A running fridge motor isn’t half as annoying as the driver who has to leave his engine running after parking up. Or worse, the driver who broadcasts his phone conversations to everyone instead of disconnecting the handsfree.
I’ll just mention the company grump who stalks the parking area looking for a colleague who he can shout and swear at. You can spot them if two or three come in together, two will park together so they’re well away from Mr Gobby.

this.
this last year, i’ve been a nightman on containers. a fair bit of the work is chilled/frozen, so much so that the firm has their own gensets. some are great, some are not. they can be a pig to get going, and jeez are they noisy. if i have to have a break when i’ve got a genset running, i’ll always park away from the lads overnighting, if poss, somewhere near the garage, but not blocking the pumps, but its not always easy, and you can never please all the people all the time.
doesn’t matter for much longer, as change jobs in 3 weeks, so no more gensets.
i will however be doing nights, mainly europe, so will have to put up with the odd numpty that Muckaway has mentioned.

Wouldn’t be ling in wasting a load of bananas in this weather with the fridge off overnight. We’ve even had to run the fridge with potatoes recently to stop them freezing.
With a lot of this turning fridges off overnight you need to be very sure there isn’t a temp tracker in the load. Or like with us some customers get the temp log sent to them by the office without the driver ever knowing. Loaded the other day in Ireland, 20 mins down road the boss rang, ‘is the fridge turned on?’, I’d forgotten to pop it on when loaded.
Never read/heard soo much [zb] until this thread, been running frigos for over 20 years and have NEVER turned it off overnight for anyone, period! When transporting HVG (High Value Goods) I cannot afford to let my customers down and they pay for this service so why would I want to risk a corrupted/rejected load?
My reefer is regularly maintained and is satellite tracked 24/7, the reefer control panel is behind a locked/alarmed cover, all fuel lines are encased in the chassis and the rear doors are fully alarmed, so if you want to attempt to tamper with that lot be my guest… PC Plod are only a phone-call away and YES I have called upon their services when someone decided to take a closer look.
The driver of a well-known Gloucestershire based general haulage company was last seen sitting in the rear of said PC Plod’s car… handcuffed!!
And before all the ■■■■■■■■ start, I ALWAYS try to park as far away from everyone so as not to disturb their sleep; where possible!!
What is this "parking up at night " with a fridge ? Are you short of work ? I know a couple of good , honest reliable Irish groupage companies that will sort all this out for you . You will be so busy you won’t have time to stop never mind park up for the night .
First 5 years driving I thought fridges were meant to be run 24 /7 - i thought something bad happened if you stopped for longer than 45 minutes or a boat crossing.
I’ll try and park away from other lorries at night if my fridge is running but I don’t turn it off for anyone so please don’t be offended if your told to do one . And for those who are parked among the curtainsiders and box jockeys with their fridges running - if you want to be kind run the fridge on constant as the constant noise is much easier to get used to . If you don’t want to be nice run the fridge on stop /start and wake them up every 20 minutes.

lol used to work for one of them when a driver who usualyy drove euroliners was put on a fridge he said “but Ican’t sleep with a running fridge on” to be told “no bother you’ll not be going to sleep till it is empty anyway”

Am never short of work, done the Irish groupage stuff for years, nae bother!!
Reefer might run 24/7 but I can’t do that now, 24/6 is more like it!!
I found the ferry crossings just slowed you down so you had to push that little bit more when off the high seas!!
ASK? thought it would be common decency but apparently not.
Like the dicks who wake at 4 to be away for 5 and leave some shagged out scania “tickin” over for an hour “just to get her warm” what an ■■■ hole.
As I said a of bit of “do as you would like to be done by” goes a loooong way
but no doubt Im another wind up ■■■■ pig merchant. Think about your fellow drivers.
