DON’T REMIND ME!!! It still sends shudders through me!
I don’t recall the exact year but it must have been the late 80s. I had just loaded sulphite powder in Knottingly for Doncaster, planning on returning to reload at Knottingly for home- had Friday planned out well in advance!
Just passing Darrington when I came up behind a slower-moving lorry so pulled into the outside lane & kept my foot down. I had just got myself level with the other vehicle’s cab when I saw a car on the Northbound side, waiting to cross into a turning opposite. Being in the middle of rush hour, I remember thinking, “She’ll be waiting there until lunch time!”, when she started to cross the road in front of me. Having got halfway across the car stopped broadside on to me. I hit the brakes but there still being air in the powder, the load shot forward to the front of the tank, pushing me ever closer to this poor, panic-stricken woman, whom I noticed had a child in the back seat. Luckily, there was quite a large gap in the flow of Northbound traffic so I elected to go for the gap in the carriageway that the car had just come through. All would have been well, but for the front nearside wheel rising up the Armco barrier. As I held on to the steering wheel for grim death, my lovely Daf, complete with tank trailer, rolled onto it’s offside and went to sleep in the slow lane on the wrong side of the dual carriageway.
Not to put too fine a point on it, the police were not best pleased, as were the county council and fire service. I did feel a whole lot better about it when the attending police inspector told me that the motorist had selected third gear instead of first and had managed to get halfway across the road before stalling the engine.
I had bruises all over- I could tell exactly which parts of the cab had hit which parts of my body and I was relegated to driving a succession of “yard shunter-type” lorries until mine was rebuilt.
It was a truly frightening experience but we were all extremely lucky to come out of it alive and as a result of the incident (A1 closed for eight hours) the gaps in the dual carriageway were permanently closed.

SAME FOR ME!!!

last friday the 13th a few years ago i got done for speeding again on the A 75 at castle douglas. when they eventually stopped me the cop asked me had i not seen them behind me…i told him,yes obviously i had…he appeared puzzled by this and asked me…so if you saw us behind you,why did you increas your speed instead of slowing down…my reply was…this is friday the 13th…i had a preminition from when i woke up this morning that something terrible would happen to me today…7 years ago exactly on this same friday the 13th day,my wife divorced me and ran off with a traffic cop,as soon as i saw you pull in behind me,i thought that was you bringing her back to me…

Why Friday do we think?

In Spain it’s the same superstition but it’s Martes 13 - Tuesday the 13th. Why? Maybe Tuesday was a busy day for the Inquisition (which nobody expects)?

I thought it was all about Good Friday - just Jesus’s rotten luck to go and get himself crucified when he could have been having fish & chips on the pier! The figure 13 refers to the number of people (12 apostles plus JC) attending the Last Supper the night before (Maundy Thursday). Perhaps they had fish & chips then too, and JC couldn’t face another one on a hangover and let the Romans put him out of his misery. Who knows?

Owing to the Enlightenment, I can be flippant about these things. If were writing about the other lot I’d be deep in the sh-shifting sands of the desert!

OK, so there were 15 including the artist and the take-away courier. That makes today the unlucky 15th. So lightning strikes twice after all! Robert :open_mouth:

Disrespectful English infidel! :imp:

Oh no! Not the comfy chair! :open_mouth: Robert

I always thought that it was Judas who sent out for the Set Meal for 13, as he had just came into a bit of money.

I once had a regular drivers mate who was a loyal and true companion, but not the sharpest tool in the box.

Walking back down the yard to book off one afternoon on a Friday 13th, I mentioned that we “had got through today without incident”.

After a brief pause, he replied (in all earnestness) “Yer, think how much bad luck there is to avoid when it falls on Halloween”…

… rather than laugh, I decided to nod sagely in agreement and said " I won’t be looking forward to that happening"

I can zb up on a good day never mind Friday 13th.
