Rob K:
It’s exactly the attitude of people like yourself that cause accidents
Who on earth do you think you are questioning my attitude?? You obviously have no idea what or who you are talking about. I have been driving HGV’s for almost 36 years and never had an accident on a motorway. In fact i have probably done more miles in reverse on cafe car parks than you have actually driven.
Glasg3w: Driving artics you have to break the law to keep within the law trying to get to your drop and at night it’s wacky races. This is sad that many people lost their lives and hopefully it was only a freak accident that happened.
That is quite possibly the biggest load of bollox I’ve read on this site in the 8 years I’ve been here.
Not defending it and I don’t know what Glasg3w meant but do you not think it might be that some HGV drivers do more than 40MPH on a single carriageway road, or 50 on a DC in order to help not exceed their driving hours? (and indeed this may be safer). You may cast the first stone if you are without sin of course. Then again he could have meant all manner of things.
Wacky races, well, many seem to be rushing to get home or away for the weekend and the perception is on some other forums (can’t really understand it myself) that lorries really do race eachother (and not cars apparently!). Maybe, speculating again, excessive speed was one of the causes of this incident, not that you can really rush much in a truck (depending on the circumstances), though if someone came to a sudden stop in front of you on the motorway and you couldn’t see them then even 30MPH might be too fast (or too slow if someone’s rushing up behind you)… [/speculation] There are after all many instances of vehicles ploughing into the rear of a line of traffic in good visibility, not that that is the case at all here.
And Wheel Nut, I think you are misunderstanding shortfatbaldbloke who has already clarified his statement on page 7: “I know the full facts of the accident… were not known when you posted.” NOT the bald claim “I know the full facts of the accident” which would be ridiculous.
It isn’t the fault of speed limiters, the fault will always lie with the bloke pressing the loud pedal. I have driven lorries with limiters fitted since about 1990 / 91 and lifting off has always been an option.
Ummm most trucks have limiters set at 56 mph but the Motorway speed limit is 60mph. Therefore the trucks werent speeding.
However cars have no limiters…
moomooland:
You join a motorway and slot in on which something like resembles a conveyer belt, thus you are sat there unable to make any head way with the vehicle in front or pull away from the vehicle behind with only feet between each vehicle.
I have always said speed limiters are a recipe for disaster, as with out doubt, they cause major bunching up of HGV’s with no one easing off the pedal to leave a safe distance.
I drive night trunk, and can from experience, tell you that i have seen it take from Keele to Knutsford services for one HGV to pass another with neither willing to give way.
I don’t pull over any more to let someone on at a slip road, as you are left stuck in the middle lane for miles elephant racing with the driver on the inside who wont back off…
Just because you can’t go any faster doesn’t mean you can’t slow down.
A little thought and you could soon find yourself in space of your own, still at the speed you want to be at
and only a little way behind the bunch of trucks you were in when you joined the motorway.
If you get bored, you can then spend the time watching which comedian takes the most miles to pass the comedian in front, instead of being one of the comedians.
moomooland,again:

I have been driving HGV’s for almost 36 years and never had an accident on a motorway.
With due respect, if you think you can’t do as suggested above, you haven’t learnt much in the 36 years and if that is your reaction to criticism, you aren’t likely to in the next 36.

But you’ve seen plenty in your mirrors.
Anyway Malc (Wheel Nut) and Nick have both responded to your post far more eloquently than I’d have been able to so you can argue your case with them as I can’t be arsed arguing with someone that clearly doesn’t understand how to use the pedals under one’s feet.

I see on Sky news just now ,they reckon it was a bank of black smoke that came across the motorway from the firework display,(presumably the rugby club) that was the likely cause of the accident and police are treating it as a criminal investigation aswell as an RTC.
From what the police chief said ,i think the organisers of the firework display could well be in the ■■■■.

Why would they if he got authorisation from the Council. If they didn’t, fair enough, if they did then surely the Council will need to answer some questions as to why they gave authorisation?

Dunno mate ,just telling you what they said on the news,i guess that’ll come out in fullness of time.
Hopefully, the investigation will uncover all the factors of this terrible crash. Not many of us know these at this time so we should not be speculating. My thoughts are with all the families and friends of those involved and the services dealing with the aftermath. One issue that concerns me is the amount of people driving past filming on their mobiles. Im sure they did not realise that they are filming people being burnt alive but how much of a delay are they causing for all the emergency services attempting to arrive at scene, that are stuck behind the congestion these drivers are causing??

Apparently, a couple of years ago a firework organiser refused to do a gig there because he felt it would be dangerous

The upside to this though helps the police in their investigations. On the news the police were asking for footage from people filming so as to help piece the puzzle together.

yep, read that in todays paper, company refused to organise a display there due to it being to close to the motorway
As this seems to have been missed by all the people arguing amongst themselves…
tyler4164:
Back to the accident, my step daughters mate has just come in & informed me that her sisters best mates dad was driving one of the trucks involved in this accident & has lost his life in this tragic accident. Its not clear at this time if he died at the accident scene or later in hospital but nether the less he has lost his life while trying to earn a living. He was from Patchway Bristol just down the road from me.
So sad to hear this
Can we please stop with all the arguing, slagging each other off and name calling ? this isn’t the right place for it, take it to another thread or pm’s if you feel the need to inflate your own personal egos.

Well said mate ,that really was a sad piece to read.
ajt:
The reason why driving standards have dropped in this country over the years is because police patrols have been replaced in favour of speed camera devices and as we know speed camera’s do not detect bad driving.
I totally agree with you mate 100% dont even see coppers on the streets now never mind the motorways.
I’m giving making a will some serious thought after this accident; Often thought I was too young but after this it makes you wonder when your time’s up…
After reading Tylers’ post, I wonder if Pavarotti feels for the victims now??
