Friday night M5 accident

I agree with most people here jd’s post was out of order but he was man enough to admit it but was made after a bad day at work and before the full facts had been reported.
I bet theres not one of us who has been held up by an accident wether its something like this or a little tap where they shut the road rather than move it to the hard shoulder and anything in between. When you don’t know the full facts I’m sure we have all moaned to ourselves or someone else because we are running late for the next delivery or out of hours or we are on a promise or taking the kids out or whatever.
But when you find out someones died or seriously injured you would have to be a pretty sick individual to not count your blessings and think someone has just lost there mum or dad brother sister etc and you been late isn’t such a big deal after all.

The Person who’s fault it was may still think it was the others Fault.
And thats right :exclamation:
Everyone has the right to use a Motorway and decides himself how fast to drive. :exclamation:
You have to keep Distance, even if the Frontman gets nervy Slow. OK,you can Overtake,if its safe to do so.
But thats not i’ll point out.
`The point is that many Useless and without any real Reason drive around. They staying at Home at such Weather would make it much better, even if it may not prevent such Accident.
But,you as Commercial,Professional Driver,You are the one which could lose House and Family,if charged for Manslaughter.
The Industry is not interested anymore in being involved in Accident, with there Lorry on the pictures, and the Pay doesnt include any Bravery bonuses.
Not that i will say that one of the lorries Fault it is,but that Jackknifing gives a bad Pics to the Public.

I have had a cracking night out, there are are a few people who probably missed it, through firework accidents, car crashes and sporting injuries, all of these will have upset someone and will be reported somewhere. Half a dozen Iraqis killed in a car crash, 17 Afghans shot by the Americans. 58 Greeks killed in a riot. So what we didn’t know them, zb happens.

If JD made a silly comment, he only joins the 1000’s of other comments made every week. Some don’t agree with other posts about Spastics, Orphans, Paedophiles or Muslims.

If a post breaks any forum rules than remove it, if it is in bad taste or near the knuckle to some, it may be hilarious to others, in this case I think it was in bad taste, but it has nothing to do with a moderator, or a poster being a former moderator.

The only people who knows what happened where involved somehow, apart from some bald bloke who said he knew all the facts, it doesn’t matter whether he adds a few commas, brackets, red ink or quotes later.

Jessicas Dad had an opinion, just like me, just like Mr Vain and Mr B. Just like died1uk and many others, it is the reason this site is a forum and not a fan site.

Of course I will be accused for being part of a clique, part of a brotherhood or for simply bullying folks.

Whatever. :unamused:

Up to now I do not know anyone killed on the M5. If I did I would probably talk about it to my nearest and dearest. I certainly wouldn’t be whining on a public forum, open to anyone who can think of an amusing alias!

ffs can we get this thread back on topic or lock it. what ive said and apologised for has now stretched to 9 pages on what is the worst road crash in decades :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation:

when my comment was made was based on the crashes ive seen on past few years i.e …

cars stuck in the middle lane with little to no damage clutching their backs, necks and knees whilst phoning a free phone number for neil hudgall ( no claim no fee ) while the traffic is backed up for miles while they dream off a foreign holiday.

this crash on the M5 when i posted i had no idea the extent of it and in this day and age wouldnt have thought it possible, but it happened and i doubt we wont see anything like this for decades more.

please stop going on about me and focus on what happened.

Puting the behaviour of car drivers aside, in my honest opinion the cause of many HGV accidents on motorways today are due to speed limiters.
You join a motorway and slot in on which something like resembles a conveyer belt, thus you are sat there unable to make any head way with the vehicle in front or pull away from the vehicle behind with only feet between each vehicle.
I have always said speed limiters are a recipe for disaster, as with out doubt, they cause major bunching up of HGV’s with no one easing off the pedal to leave a safe distance.
I drive night trunk, and can from experience, tell you that i have seen it take from Keele to Knutsford services for one HGV to pass another with neither willing to give way.
I don’t pull over any more to let someone on at a slip road, as you are left stuck in the middle lane for miles elephant racing with the driver on the inside who wont back off

I think you have hit the nail on the head with this,I couldnt agree with you more !

In some cases but probably not in this one.Patchy rolling fog is on of those things that you need to see and then take action to reduce speed ‘before’ you run into it because if not it’s often too late.If it’s an unlit motorway at night the only way that you’ll see it in time is by use of the main beam headlights because the dipped headlights won’t pick it out rolling across in front of you until it’s too late.

Just add my sypathies for all those families who have lost someone through this horrific event.

Look ! we all know how quickly a moments lack of attention can escalate. perhaps it is a good thing that we are shocked by the sheer carnage off this iccident, it proves what a thankfully rare occurance major pile ups, with this severity of outcome are.

Anyone who says they have 100% attention to the road at all times is a lier. normaly you get away with it, for all are sakes lets hope it stays that way.

Truck steady

Driving artics you have to break the law to keep within the law trying to get to your drop and at night it’s wacky races. This is sad that many people lost their lives and hopefully it was only a freak accident that happened.

A sad, sad terrible time…

+1 Let’s get back on topic

tachograph:
JD has explained the circumstances and apologised for the content of the post and that should really be an end to it

^^
This

At least he was man enough to take back what he said, no way am I defending what was said because I dis-agree with the comment made. But we all say things in the heat of the moment whether we know about circumstances or not that we don’t mean to say. I ask anyone to put their hand up and say they haven’t said anything irrational in a heat of the moment situation and I bet there wouldn’t be one hand that goes up. Maybe it’s time to stop arguing like little kids and start thinking of the poor souls who were caught in this horrific accident. Members who have beef with each other should either ignore one another or put them on the ignore list or do the grown up thing and settle their differences and be civil. If you can’t do this then I recommend asking yourselves why you are on a public forum if you cannot even discuss things like adults and fly off the handle at the first thing you see that you don’t agree with. Everyone has an opinion and they are entitled to be open about that opinion whether you like it or not, if you don’t like it then don’t read it.

Again it’s time to put this unimportant ■■■■ to rest and start thinking about what really matters like the family and friends of those affected by this horrific mess.

My condolences go out to all those affected by this and I can only hope that a serious lesson is learnt from this.

Cheers

Jonny

I was looking at the Ariel footage on the news, looks like at least one arctic driver may steered his way to some safety,as the o/s of the cab had missed the rear of the trailer in front, probably still injured, i wouldn’t wish that on anyone, I am some what surprised at how quick trucks burst into flames, diesel although flammable won’t ignite unless it reaches a high temp or is aspirated into a naked flame, was the lighting switched off on that part of the m5 or is it an unlit section?, if they where switched off maybe a rethink is needed in adverse weather

No there’s no lighting at j25 & it’s one of those junctions where the sliproad goes up to join the motorway from a fairly busy junction below.

That is not the fault of the limiter…Just pig headed drivers!

Has anyone thought about the cause of this?

Its just after the junction which runs uphill could it be a slow wagon or car had run up to join the motorway and everyone couldnt get out of the lanes in time, the usual ill just pull on to the motorway and hope for the best we have all seen it before but not to this extent.

Theres plenty of people on here that are outspoken a lot JD is entitled to his opinion. I feel very sorry for those involved but this will happen again and again and nothing will EVER be done to prevent it happening again as usual the lorries will get the blame or speed !.

hi guys just been watching bbc breakfast news and some ■■■■ reveiwing the papers from the guardian said it was trucks and coaches doing 80 to 90mph that may have caused this horrific accident cannot beleavie the ■■■■ the media come out with

I also saw this ■■■■ on BBC news. Although he didnt say trucks doing 80mph caused the accident. He was talking about the possible raise of the motorway speed limit to 80mph…he was talking crap about lorries and coaches driving at 80mph.
I was shouting in rage at the clueless idiot. Email now on its way to BBC for poor/sensationlism journalism!

Says on the bbc news 4 of the 7 where from the same car :frowning:

The general driving standard has deteriorated over the last few years and is unlikely to get better. How many times have you seen a car with his front fogs on and as he passes, his rear fogs are also on yet he is still doing 80 tailgating. I always like conversations in cars with people when they say how bad some drivers are and yet they then right in front of me, perform a bad driving error. Everything thinks they’re brilliant drivers but never questions their own skill.

I have never been to an RTC that has involved a limiter being the issue so not sure where that has come from, and I must say, any RTC involving trucks, 90% are down to the car driver. This crash will hopefully stop all those people that say “Fog matrix■■? I’m not blind” to rethink their comments. Fog moves and the HA know where it is so set signs accordingly. Just because it isn’t foggy right where you are, it could have been or soon will be.

As I understand it, a Sainsburys truck was involved but the driver got out as we’re 2 Samworth trucks who I understand may not be with us anymore, I’m sure by now the families would habe been told so don’t criticiser as I doubt the wife’s would be searching a forum looking for answers.

Condolences to all involved and respect especially to the people that tries to help and the emergency services who will have to deal with the harrowing things they’ve seen for a long time to come. Let’s hope it wasn’t caused by some muppet driving stupid or on the phone.

Confirmed 7 dead. Too many whatever the figures.
