Four-in-Line trailers

bowser:
Dennis old chap , you’ve just dragged a distant memory back .
I do remember tipping several times at Shotten and having to reload because it was refused , telephone directorys as i remember . They had a shocker of an automated tipping system where you booked yourself in and a huge tipping hall , would that have been the same with your chaps ?

Taking it all back to salford/bolton never went down well .

Yea,same place but this firm we ran in for never had a load refused, well none that we took in anyhow.Cheers Dennis.

That’s a good point  a good thread is being ruined by insults and personal attacks !

Steady old chap we’ve come to a stop , dont knock it

i did a couple of loads into davisons at bolton . it was hilarious when a skip came in and tipped a load of gentlemans magazines . all the staff were filling any bag they could carry . i often wondered why they wanted so many .

So you did the job both ends then Dennis , waste in finished out .

I remember that going on , they used to spray dye on them to stop it happening , i believe they still do although its not davidsons anymore …

We did more-or-less everything in and out of the Mills we operated for, maybe not all the waste as it was neither practical or viable but we did haul all the woodpulp in from as far north as Montrose and as far South as Royal Portbury and Sheerness. One big job we did at East Lancs was bringing back 24 ton loads of trim from all the Bowater/Rexam plants,we used to have a stand trailer in each plant that they loaded straight off the balers.Cheers Dennis.

I’ll bet you still have a bundle or two 'int garden shed “bowser”,does that dye wear off eventually ■■? :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

This is a load of Bowater trim stood in the depot at Milnthorpe, down from Scotland en route to the “Promised land” in Radcliffe.

I never did anything that distant with Davidsons i would assume that was left to your type of operation , it was more local stuff like bailed cardboard from Asda and the like but i remember doing quite alot of handball HMSO stuff , it always seemed to be small boxes of paper that were a nightmare to unsheet as it would tumble off and fall all over the place .

How did those nets fair then ?

We had them at davidsons but i dont remember using them much , very light and easy to use but i always ended up with heavy sheets mostly two of them .

They were great for that job, easy to use and it saved the main sheets from getting wires stuck through them,it was also suprising how much rain they kept off but the load wasn’t on the trailer above a day or two at most. Cheers Dennis.

I’m suprised they kept the rain off but there you go you live and learn .

The load in the picture reminds me of the Asda loads , they were exactly the same …

that hmso otuf was what i took in davison’s , loaded in kilsyth . your right as well bowser , when the sheets came off , it was a paper blizzard . what a waste though , all those tons of pamphlets and booklets never been issued just scrapped .

I ve just had a shufty at this thread, its hilarious, even better than Jazzandy ramblings. It seems to have drifted away from it s original theme 4 in lines which were operated by Springfield Transport until real trailers became availiable, they were a complete pile of rubbish and anyone who has changed an inside wheel will agree with me. As you seem to have drifted back to you re favourite subject Mr. Bewick, it may interest you to know that we operated over the foot bridge over the Irwell in Pioneer mill my brother Tony was a machine operator at East Lancs for several years, we ve sunk many a pint with you re drivers in the Paper Mkers now closed the mill was completely demolished several years ago and the last loads out of there were done by BTS no not Bewick, Brooklands Transport Services.Regards toall. Crow.

Thanks for that info Crow, the Mill finished a while after I had left the WRM Group so I have no idea what happened, the management that I dealt with for 6 years had also finished/retired before the Mill closed I believe.Cheers Bewick.

It was the same at Jebbs at Wallsend, i done a shunt there for a couple of years for Stiller’s,. the staff didn’t get paid much but they were the salt of the earth.

hiya,
Vic in the late 50s to the early 60s used to get the odd return load
out of Jebbs the backloaders used to get all the rubbish, they would
give you bales for down the sides and across the back then loose to
fill the middle which you had to spread around and trample it down
level with the bales, then repeat twice more not too bad loading a
right pig of a job tipping having to kick and shovel it off, do Jebbs
still do waste paper.■■. Never got any mucky mags though.
thanks harry, long retired.

Yea Harry, not to sure but i think this will be right,Jebbs became part of reed paper and moved down to the Valley, becoming Riverdale waste,i think they are still there and have part of the Huwoods yard. The worst load we had out of there was the off cuts of wax card from the square milk cartons!!!slippy as hell.I did get plenty of (books)and ciggies out of Wills waste
