Yea thats right srap metal, Larry, but i think the waste paper side sold out many years ago to Reeds, but still went under the name of Jebb Brothers, till they moved to the valley and they became Riverdale.I think Shepherds had their old place on Hadrian road the last time i was past that way.Vic

Hi all new on here please dont shoot me but I found 4in lines a good trailer we ran BTC who had a place on Kirkby est on the A580 yes it was a problem finding tyre co’s who would change an inner tyre but the gaffer usually sent a fitter out with a spare, the knack of undoing the wheel nuts was to use a 2 piece stenner bar and a flat bit of steel put the steel under the bar and gently pull the wagon forward or reverse until you “cracked” the nuts then jack it up and change the wheel never found one to be unstable and we carried some tall loads in fact I had a bad experiance with a single axle trl when the 2 ns tyres blew thought that was going over loaded with pallets 15ft. some blokes made a real meal of changing wheels, offered to help a couple of blokes on Keele services and was told to f off if they could’nt undo the nuts a little runt like me had no chance, after an hours kip, I woke up find that they still had’nt cracked the nuts so I bet them a mug of tea that I could they was big old boys but both knackered so they agreed 10 mins later all the nuts undone went and had me dinner when I came back they was just finishing up one offered me a couple of quid when I declined he said he owned the wagons and to buy myself a meal he also said sometimes little runts came in handy and shook my hand
brgds ron

Usefull sometimes, no doubt, but the young lady has just spent the best part of five minutes removing only one nut.
If I’d just spent a fortune on a piece of technology like that I’d want a quicker result. Back to the long bar, methinks.

Well said there Ron !Although I never ran any 4-in-lines(they were obsolete before I started!) I was always impressed by their economics, tyre wear (100,000 miles) and payload at 24 ton gross.OK they might have caused problems if the driver took liberties with them but if you looked after the tyres and drove with a reasonable ammount of care the Four-in-line trailer was a better and more economical proposition than a 30/33ft tandem at 24 ton GVW ! Only my opinion,Cheers Bewick.

Heres my little story about 4 in lines.I went in to partnership with a scrap merchant in the Forest of Dean.We got the job of cutting up all of Richard Reads BTC trailors  I so enjoyed that job after repairing them when I worked at Richards.I am only just getting over changing the inside wheel in the snow at Brierley. Its about 4 miles from the Read yard.My partner decided it would be a good idea to get the brass bushes out,but after wasting a lot of gas and oxy he decided to let them go in with the heavy metal.

HI MR B ,Your spot on with the milage of the tyres ,one of ours had Goodyear cross ribs on done abount 105,ooo miles only took them off becouse they went all lumpy with the all the bouncing when mt running, the only good thing i had to say abount them ,cheers Barry

Oh! and don’t forget Barry, was it the BTC 4-in-lines that had the Auto Lube or did all 4-in-lines have it fitted. They sure were a popular trailer in their day for running at 24 ton GVW,they only needed using carefully and they were fine.I got to know the former BTC Sales Director James Walmsley (nickname- Pugwash!),long after they had closed,he was at Municipal Trailers by this time but he sure could tell some tales about selling 4-in-lines throughout the UK !!! Cheers Mr.B.

Well in 1966 I got a new Dodge Tractor unit along with a four in line York trailer 30ft long, It was like a bendy toy, I was pleased when I was alloted a 28ft York single axle outfit, The four in line was trouble from day one, Anyway to cut a long storey short some years later in the 70s I worked for Ken Short , F Short & Sons Ltd & his foreman fitter talked him into buying this four in line from Coats Bros Wardley & It was History re-pating itself once again it was still a bendy toy & caused all sorts of problems from day one, I think they scrapped it eventually, It is in fact the only York Four In Line I ever saw, But of course the obviousley made more than one, Regards Larry.

my father had a k series dodge with four in line in 1966 when he worked for Obridge of Felton.

Cheers Barry

Well now I remember Oughbridege from Felton, Would I be right in saying one of their drivers was Lawrence Usher, If my mem is correct they had a contract with some oil firm ■■?, & Later on Lawrence went to work for Russels of Bathgate along with Artie Richardson, Big Bart Thompson, Arthur Foggety, When they did a change over at Morpeth when their was a allnight cafe on the corner next to the Square, I remember being told that Artie Richardson was given a TK Bedford 4 Wheeler with a load of drops for London ■■?, I new him when he worked for Telfer, Then Harry Nichol & the perhaps you are the Smith from Swarland where he worked until he retired, Regards Larry.

This is “a bash 4-in-line trailers” thread Larry, not a who’s who of Russell of Bathgate night men !!! Cheers dennis.

Sorry Dennis, I get carried away sometimes when names are mentioned about old firms from the 50/60s Era, Plus Im on the Glens at the moment, Enjoying them & the crack on here, Regards Larry.
