Foreign Drivers

An article in the Telegraph today says foreign drivers face up-to £900 on the spot fines and parked up if they can’t pay. :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

About time too.

Now hit-em with some road tax. :sunglasses:

telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/ … fines.html

Totally agree with the fine paying, impound the vehicle until said fine is paid.
Sadly, GB will never implement a vingette system as it is not a transit country

what about all the euro traffic transitting to ireland, or all the irish transitting to europe

Didn’t realise they couldn’t already get me. :unamused:
Sounds fair enough though, we do it here I believe.

This will if done correctly ,Will maybe shorten the list of companys, that are acting incorrectly, and hopefully help those drivers who are being treated as plain work horses.

Hope they have some large lorry parks arranged

Hopefully they won’t because it would be another nail in the UK transport industry if they did. Any road user charge introduced would have to apply to UK vehicles as well, so wanting a charge introduced on foreign trucks would be a bit like turkeys voting for Christmas. The Government could reduced the existing RFL for UK vehicles to compensate but the chances of that are slim to non existent, wouldn’t be a vote winner with the great British public for a start.

Pete rather than fining these foreign drivers do you think we should take a leaf out of PC Mick Leighfield’s book? (He is Salisbury’s Race and Community Relations Officer) And his experience at catching large amount of gypsies with unlicensed and uninsured vehicles is, instead of punishing them to educate and train them to be legal instead. So, instead of fining lorry drivers should we be sending them on tacho courses instead?

Mike-c, I think the best way is to stop, check the truck & driver if he/she is deliberatly breaking the law then take action, just like the police/bag or the what ever they are called else where do, Stop, check, fine, impound,or
shall we say park the vehicle up,if a weekend break is required then make the driver take a break,
after this has been
in place and working for say 6 months we would i belive see
a change in the ways of those who were breaking the law,
The old days where we and this was normaly practise for
all be it british, french, german etc etc, and we drove day and night, are out,it makes our job and way of life harder
but we either except this or we need to change jobs,
The digi tacho has ended the old style of lorry driveing

I need to agree with brit pete on this one and its good to see the the shoe on the other foot for a change, for far to long the Ministry, VOSA have targeted Brittish trucks and in many cases for good reason while the rest of the EU finest just strolled by laughing knowing they have free scoff in this country!! It can only be a good thing having level playing field and might just change the image of VOSA among Brittish drivers too :unamused:

i am a bit baffled on this, not sure.
the benelux and danes also pay vignette?
the germans are also paying maut?
do they also pay roadtax in their own countries?
why can the uk not impose transit charges.
being irish myself,i know this is shooting irish hauliers in the foot, but they may as well pay in the uk,as uk trucks going to ireland would pay along with all the other trucks coming into ireland.
bearing in mind, ireland and the uk pay annnual roadtax and put a disc on the windscreen to prove it.
no other countries trucks have tax discs like us.

yeah it’s a great shame that no other country requires the UK tax disc to be displayed, it most certainly means they don’t pay an annual tax of any kind.

Each country has its own way of collecting
what in the UK is called ROAD-TAX, and belive me
it is collected, what may be differnt is that many
countrys allow those vehicles who are cleaner say
euro 4,or 5 to pay a lower road tax, and they also
still pay the maut, or toll, peage etc charges that
are raised in their respective countrys

Benelux and Danes pay road tax just like everywhere else in Europe.
Germans also pay road tax
In most countries on payment of the road tax they are issued with a certificate to prove that it has been paid which any controlling officer can demand to see, the Dutch also use numberplate recognition cameras.

yet more slagging off of us foreigners abusing the system.

just for your information just because we don’t display a tax disc doesn’t mean we don’t pay tax. every year we have to pay IVTM which translates as roadtax but it differs on where you are based so some councils charge up to twice as much as others within a couple of miles of each other. we also have toll roads just like France, Germany which we pay for and we pay tax on our fuel.

Maybe if Gordon Brown didm’t rob you so much and actually used roadtax for the road system us foreigners would not have to put up with being the scapegoats all the time

We can drive around most of Europe without paying anything if we so wish, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Norway (I think) Greece, and Macadonia are all free if you use the right roads, yet the trucks in all these countrys have to pay to use their own roads, and like us, if they choose to use certain roads they have to pay extra tolls.

I can’t see the problem

Basically yet another case of foreigners being blamed to cover up for the UK Governments own ineptitude.
Obviously we can not expect everyone here to know or understand the full facts of tax legislation in all countries but there is really no need to blame the foreigners for all the evils that your own government has bestowed upon you.
