Fodens.

Back in the days when we parked the lorries at home the bloke on the next street had a stroker . Every morning at 5 on the dot i could hear him howling his way up axe edge , 2 miles from our house as the crow flies . Can’t say i ever remember him being off the road with it though , but our gaffer was as thick as a plank , wouldn’t employ a mechanic and all our service and repairs were done at Sandbach . Dave

I drove a ts3 for a while in '65 , it wasn’t too bad as it was a long wheelbase and the silencers were in line under the chassis . It threw the sparks out in front of the back wheel so they didn’t blind me , just anyone behind me . Quite a nice motor to drive . The tinnitus came later with a Scammel with a 680 leyland . dave

You surprise me if I were a betting man I,d have had a fiver on the Commer. Mind you once you,ve got a dose of the big T does it matter. Motor scraper had me n can,t get a penny for it, hey ho . It,s a bludy nuisance mind, but so,s the missus n I can,t get a penny for her either, bless her

Ive just found a photo of my old motor on the internet but i cant seem to post it on here. Anyone care to have a go , i found it by putting D355 GWX in Google . It`s a Foden fairground motor now but was a tractor unit when i had it. :open_mouth:

Is it because it`s on flikr that it cant be uploaded?

Nice 1 Pete , i couldn`t post it . I got this around 1990 it came from a Halifax company Parkinson Spencer i think, with a tri axle double wheel flat trailer. It was a short wheelbase unit with a Gardner 320 and a 9 speed fuller and it was a very good puller ,the only fault was the low roof .

Yep they were at Holmfield at the bottom of Windy Bank Lane , they made refractory bricks■■? i think, the motor and trailer were light blue when they arrived, i can`t understand the criticism of the 320 Gardner unless we had a freak !!!

This come in our yard today

Contra factual always iffy but had Foden survived n I had a mind to order a new 8whlr what spec would I be offered ? Tipper with coal sides Manual gearbox would be nice. Even dafter could I get S83 that were legal ? What engine/g box/ axles would I end up with. If we end up with a good un pop it in my stocking for chrissy

No takers ? Would it be a Scania in sheeps clothing or a Renault in wolves ? Or something worth driving ?

I’m a bit younger than many here (cough) but my abiding memory every time I hear or see the word “Foden” is of me being about 5yo in the back of Dad’s Anglia on the A3 from Pompey to London of a Friday night, and the unholy noise that Slate 'n Tile’s 8-leggers made. It used to put the willies up me.

Tower Hill Transport from Boston. I read somewhere that when they loaded out of London Brick they had to leave room for ten ton of spuds on top of the load, how true that is I have no idea! :open_mouth: I believe it was one of their lads who was stopped for being overloaded and called into the yard to ask what to do. “Put some onto your running mates lorry” was the answer, his reply was “That’s no good, he already has more on than me”! I get the impression that they ran top weight plus a ‘little’ bit more haha. Whatever they put on them the old Fodens would take it willingly.

Pete.
