Fodens.

The last picture should be famous. Long before the ‘Ghan’ and its railway through to Darwin from the Alice came into being, several hauliers, including the young Noel Buntine, got together to form Co-Ord in order to close the link between north and south. Thus the road train cargotainers were born.
I believe Noel still had a hand in it in 1969 when I worked for him, as triples with Co-Ord colours carrying redundant railway lines from the Nullabor refuelled at our base in Katherine heading north and south.
The rails were 50 foot long I think as on 40 foot flats they overhung front and back so much that they clanged together as they snaked round our yard to the pumps.

This truck is certainly famous, if not preserved, and was certainly mentioned several times on this topic. But could any of you please give me its specifications: model, year, engine (perhaps Gardner 8LW or 6LX), transmission. Thanks.

Love the Willi Betz Foden, Buzzer! Bet that didn’t come from SOMAT  . Interesting set of grand steps up to the catwalk too. Surprised there’s no red carpet with it! I see it’s a 410 so very likely a ■■■■■■■ then.

I don’t remember Tony Kent (AK transport) running that Foden unit, most of the fleet were powder tankers? Possibly it was one he ‘inherited’ following his seperation from Sellers and Kent as they were big Foden users?

Pete.
