David

Nope, one before bed sets me up for the night, but once on my feet again, I do have to make haste. :unamused:

Lucky you! I make haste, assume the pose, then suddenly realise it was a false alarm!

Mmm, DHL 595V. Travelled a few miles in that Haulmaster, and rebuilt itโ€™s engine. Regular driver Dennis Bond (rip) would leave our quarry on a monday for a short run to Lichfield and often not return until friday or saturday much to the annoyance of our dispatcher!

I occasionally ran with C.W Griffiths lads when working out of Gore quarry near Kington. They always ran a tidy fleet.

Pete.

So if you were driving a 1950s Foden, was there much of an improvement going from the S20 cab to the S21?

Big improvement , the s20was spacious and cold and the12speed auxiliary lever was a big thing down on the left at floor level . The s21 was compact , slightly warmer and the air change auxiliary on the dash was a huge step forward . The earlier s20 had hydraulic booster brakes that worked best at high revs , not much help of the revs dropped . In an emergency throw it in neutral , brake with left foot while holding the accelerator down to keep the revs up . They soon went over to full air .

Interesting, as a kid I thought the 21 was stylish and different but looking into the cabs as an interested adult, they look cramped. The S20 still looks a smart cab 70 years on. I suppose some of the modernisation applied to the 21 could have been applied to the 20?

Shipstones Star Brewery at Nottingham were longtime Foden users, they were painted red and there are several in preservation and still have the two stars on their cab fronts.
