First steps...

Had my assessment this morning, went pretty well I think. Had a bit of trouble getting used to the gears to start with, but soon felt comfortable with it. So, I’ve booked to start C training on Monday Feb 18th at 8am. Going to be having three days with four-hour lessons in the mornings, followed by test at 8.30am on Thursday.

Good on ya Kev and hope ur lessons go well.
Living the dream  Enjoy

Cheers mate, and thanks for the advice. Watch this space!

Quick question - my practical training starts in three weeks, and it’s been a couple of months since I passed my theory and HP tests. Is it worth me having a read through the training guides again to familiarise myself with the rules and regs again before the practical starts?

Also, does the examiner ask you any highway code/drivers rules and regs questions on your test? If so, what kind of stuff?

Want to get prepared as best as I can!

They ask you 2 show me tell me questions which your trainer should take you through.

I wouldn’t worry about going over the theory stuff too much. Just make sure you are aware of speed limits for an HGV, and any other basic stuff that comes to mind.

No highway code stuff like the car test then?

It’s not tested by oral exam but obviously your driving should reflect your knowledge of it.

Excellent, cheers

One week to go until my Cat C training starts, can’t wait to get on with it now. Seems like ages ago since I did my assessment, these past few weeks have really dragged. Excited at the prospect of getting started, but a bit nervous about tripping up too. Gonna have a read of the DSA books this week to refresh my head on a few things and get me in the right frame of mind!

So, day 1 of my cat C training is complete! Was out from 8am-1200 and covered one of the possible test routes around Wetherby and the outskirts of Leeds, from the ring road and into Roundhay, Seacroft etc.

The morning went relatively well I think, just a few blips to iron out tomorrow and Wednesday but no serious recurring problems. I felt comfortable and relaxed throughout the drive, except for a couple of occasions at roundabouts/lights where I had too many things going through my mind at once and I was a bit panicked.

Got to grips with gearbox OK, and felt I did OK on checking mirrors. Probably need to be more aware of
checking nearside mirror when setting off from lights etc, and double checking blind spot, but trainer (Paul
at Elmet Driver Training) said he felt at ease with my driving so that was good to hear. Tomorrow is covering another test route in Harrogate/Knaresborough area (using Walton test centre at Thorp Arch).

Looking forward to getting back out!

… trainer (Paul at Elmet Driver Training) …

There are many medicines, including herbal ones, available for having him as your trainer

Seriously, sounds like a normal good first day

Day 2 complete, a nice morning’s driving around Wetherby, up the A1 to the test route in Knaresborough and Harrogate, and back to Wetherby. I was a bit concerned by the thick fog and frost when I set off from my house, but thankfully it was nice and clear by the time I got to Sherburn so it didn’t pose any problems!

The drive went well again, didn’t have any major dramas and was just told to keep on top of my observations in built-up areas (pedestrians at crossings, passing parked vehicles etc) and to keep my speed down - “less space, less speed” is the order of the day. Hoping I can stay relaxed, concentrate and pull everything together when it counts!

Tomorrow is reversing practice, and another run around the Leeds test route to prepare for Thursday morning!

Another good day. Well done.

Dont be surprised if tomorrow is a crap day. 75-80 % of people on here have suffered a mid point crisis. Just let it go over your head and you’ll be fine.

Remember to keep on top of your observations when stationary too. You might come to a red light and think you’ve got a minute or two to relax… you haven’t. Always be checking your mirrors, you need to be constantly aware of what’s going on around you; especially if there’s pedestrians about.

The bad day that is, not the truck. Good luck for Thursday.

Day 3 done. Started out with reverse practice, which thankfully I managed to do first time (and a couple more times after). Was a bit concerned that I might struggle with that, so it was a good start to the morning.

After that we went to the Leeds test route again, and I made a massive effort to think of it like a test and be on top of my game and iron out the details. Had a really good drive, and just an hour into my four hours today Paul said I was ready for my test. I wish I could’ve taken the test today to be honest as I felt good - hoping I can repeat the feat tomorrow now.

Early start in the morning as test is at 8.30am!

Sounds like you’ve nailed it mate
Just keep calm, concentrate and do what you know you need to do - all the best.

Looking forward to hearing your good news tomorrow Kev.
