How about coopers of cannock, they used to pull out of smith stone & knight paper reels and p t smith was in there too. Not sure if they re still about…

cooopers are still going

smith stone and knight are now part of the smurfitt kappa empire . my uncle worked for them on the forklifts till he retired a few years back

I knew some of the forklift drivers in the ninties, Jim & Richard are two that come to mind.

Big G…The credit goes to Bubbs for finding this one.

Thanks for the pics Marc. The one of J Hayward’s with the International Tractors on reminds me of when I first started with a couple of Transit’s. International would get their lorries that had delivered tractors down south, to collect parts on their return through the Midlands. If anything was not ready they would return without it, (no cab phones then.)This would often result in a call to Haywards to get an express pick up before 5 o’clock and deliver for the night shift. Ray Mason would often phone me for the job, very often 3 or 4 nights a week. it could be a couple of bins or a small shoebox size, you only had part numbers to go on. I could do this job and be back home for a few hours kip before doing a day job, but it was not unknown to find a message on the pad to say be in B.R.D. Aldridge at 3am, to load for Bathgate! What I found amusing was when things went a bit quiet Ray would say “Put ya feet up I’ll ring ya when I need ya” Then maybe 4 or 5 days later I’d answer the phone and a voice would say “got ya pen” as if it had been 4 or 5 minutes and I had been sitting there waiting for a call. I don’t know what Ray was like to work for on the firm but I found him to be an exceptional chap who seemed to keep every thing in his head. When a driver rang in it would go something like this,:" Nut into A’s poke that into B’s nip over to C’s tip that at D’s in Glasgow nut over to E’s run that down to Sheffield, over to G’s load and run into here, see ya Friday, tat ta! The poor driver had no chance to question anything!!

Yeah, I remember the name and he was thought very well of by Ray Mason in my day. of course back then there were a good few ‘proper drivers’ and roping & sheeting was to be expected. But still some shone through for that little extra dedication and I think Mick was one of these.
MIKE P, : Have you seen the thread on Baileys Potatoes?

Saw this one on Bubb’s thread. Think they were from Teeside but looks like they had a depot in Walsall. Anyone remember them?

They were from Billingham bigG and I think they bought out another firm up there called Sandersons.I’m sure they were absorbed into TDG,but at one time they ran a big fleet,a lot of Atkis IIRC.Durhams also won the Commercial Motor “Haulier of the Year” award many years ago.
I didn’t know they had a depot in Walsall.

All very quiet! was it something I said? Borrowed a couple of pic’s from Bubb’s Scrapbook thread while he isn’t looking.

Don’t think this one has been on before,…has it.
An unusual one for S Jones, Wonder if Curnock remembers it!
