Jimmy and Cliff ran a tidy outfit which I always admired but they specialised in running up the way to Scotland so you didn’t see them down south much. Cheers Bewick.

I used to have contact with a gent named George Hall who worked for a haulier in Penrith , he and his brother both worked for Finey`s for many years .
I went past their former yard last week, it’s now a housing development. If we had 4 or 5 tons for Scotland that didn’t fit with anything else Jimmy would always find room for it on one of his. “Go and find Cliff in the yard, he’ll take it off for you”, he used to say when I took it to their place.
I remember Finnys, when they ran mostly ERFsand all the number plates had the number 500 in I do recall prior to the ERFs they ran some Dennis 6 wheelers ( Jubilant I think), there traffic was nut & bolts, from a company in I think Atherton plus general goods, mostly Scotch traffic and Steel coil back from Ravenscraig.A driver I worked with at Air Products Carrington by the name of Alf Jackson he worked for Finney’s, in fact he knew both Jimmy & Cliff quite well, in fact he bought Jimmy’s old house…(God ime a hive of useless information. Cheers Alec
There were several nuts and bolts makers in Atherton. Perhaps the largest and best known was Prestwich Parker.
Hi, Folks We bought one of Fineys E R f units with a ■■■■■■■ V6 in ,i think it was a demo type called a vim or vam .? it was a tidy motor reg no STU 500 C , IT WENT like a rockett when it went but didnt go very often ,It was on a 3 day week off for the rest ,Shame a nice looking tool .Cheers Barry
I first came across J&C Fineys motors at Leith Docks in the mid 60s , they were in the same dock shed as myself loading Danish bacon for the DBC in Manchester. The motor being loaded was a very smart rigid 8 wheeler ERF , the driver I will never forget with the cloth cap , Park Drive cigarette in the corner of his mouth and wearing a pair of clogs , from then on I was a big follower of J&C Finey
s . Many years later I was involved with a company in Manchester who had a manager who was employed in a traffic office near to Finey`s , it was the habit at that time that all the office staff from transport companies in the area would meet up for a pint on a Saturday lunch time and chat over the week in a particular pub . He use to refer to Jack Finey who he said was a real character , he recalled how Jack Finey would appear in the pub wearing a very expensive suit and if you checked out his foot wear it was usually a pair of gym or sports shoes as the poor man had a problem with his feet .
thats it
i worked for a guy in glasgow that shared a yard in the docks with them for a while…wouldnt spend a penny to fix the glasgow truck to the extent that when the door jammed shut and for weeks it was never fixed, the driver had to climb out the window every day…right up till the day he fell out of it,knocked the dead man off,and watched the truck roll backwards down the broomilaw straight into the river clyde…i was on 1 on his trucks breifly loading out of shell in trafford park in winter…waiting in the queue, door opens, jimmy comes out with, what are you doing…duh, waiting to get loaded, whats the engine running for,cos theres no heater and theres a foot of snow outside…he flung me out into his car, told me to go to the yard, and wait till he loaded the truck for me switching it off in the proccess,I watched him transhipping full 45 gallon drums from 1 flatbed to the next one,he bursts his bollox with his face like a slapped arse staggering across the gap with them on his shoulder so he wouldnt have to use the forklift truck…he says to the shunter to tell the ravenscraig crew he was sending them up a cp of cases to go with their xmas dinner…he sends up 2 cases of lucozade, coke, and hp sauce that was nicked from their respective factories around tydsley…the shunter just kept them as he was too afraid of the booting he would have received in ravenscraig…just a typical haulage contractor tight assed mentality…same as farmers,so miserable that they only breath in.to be fair,i thought he was a funny typical flatcap guy,and he always thought i was mental when everytime he spoke to me i ■■■■■■ myself laughing at him.thee thy thumm therrrr

Do you remember that daf he add parked outside
is gaf
where is it as it been restored
Road tax expired October 1990.
Think the Daf outside the house rotted away and was scrapped a good few years ago. Used to run with Finneys on the paper job from Kent to Lancashire. I remember Cloggy (was his name Cartwright?) The step and door shut on his A series were shot from being kicked by his clogs as he got in and out. Bob
