Hi DJC,
Yes. I looked at both of these and still couldn’t get any clarification. The first thing it says is:-
You can’t normally drive large vehicles and lorries (category C) until you’re 21. You’ll also first need a full car licence, and will then need to apply for provisional category C entitlement then take the category C test. Driving large vehicles or lorries at 18 In some cases you can drive large vehicles and lorries when you’re 18. See the guide to Driver CPC for more information.
Note that it says “You can’t NORMALLY drive . . until you’re 21” and “In some cases . . when you’re 18”. This would suggest to me that there are likely to be significant restrictions and/or exceptional circumstances to being allowed to drive Class 1/2 vehicles at 18 i.e. unlikely that you would be allowed to do a NORMAL HGV job like the one the OP is talking about.
As far as I’m aware there arnt any restrictions what so ever to driving, I can jump in a truck tomorrow providing insurance ect and haul a turbine tower or 80ton crusher. My licence is the same as someones that’s been driving c+e for 30+ years.
Don’t really think some young lads should be labeled as incapable of driving such a vihicle because of the other jobless benifit sponging majority that drive round like idiots in cars that don’t care and give the minority the bad name of not being able to do a job because of the reputation.
Time and place to drive like an idiot and it’s not in a 44t truck on a public highway.
But back to the question the hire and reward part is if you don’t have a cpc card ‘witch I do’ if say like I do race quads and drive a race truck to the tracks.
To drive for profit you need to do the module 2 & 4 like all of drivers will need to do before September this year.
Think to be honest it’s just a way of making money the cpc in my opinion but got to be done.
You’re right, there isn’t. I’m running at 44t on a regular basis and I’m only a year older than yourself.
Take the job and if it doesn’t work out you at least have some experience under your belt and if you can stay for two years and leave with a good reference your on your way then!
It used to be 21 for HGV and any age for PCV as long as you had your car entitlement for 1 year prior. With PCV you were limited to 50kms of your operating depot until 21 years old.
The exemptions for HGV were if you were in the forces. I think there may have also been another along the lines of if you’re using a vehicle for personal use instead of commercial but not sure.
If you haven’t already, take the job! Any job you get offered will always be a worrying thing, learning about nights out, parking, etc is the one thing you’ll only learn with experience! Never be afraid to ask for help, no matter how stupid it may sound or make you feel, and most importantly, always take your time. Rushing doesn’t get it done any quicker, and will more likely end up with you having an accident! That’s not worth it!
The very best of luck to you

Cheers mate seriously concise ring the job, heads swaying abit with the other job offer that’s days and being able to use my bed! Lol I know rushing only ends up in 1 thing, forgetting something or accident lol.
Thanks for your advice mate much appreciated!
18 year old getting a job as a class 1 driver soon after passing and he is on here asking about it. YOU MAD, JUST TAKE THE JOB AND stick at it for at least 2 years

Go for it. Opportunities like this should be seized. There’s so many posts saying people can’t get work/experience and it might not come around again for you. If it’s not for you you’ve lost nothing other than a few nights away from home.
If you have a choice, look at the pros and cons of each job, what you’ll learn, equipment, hours, pay, where you’ll likely to go etc, which does make a difference, and most importantly, what you’ll actually enjoy more.
Going different places everyday, can be very challenging, but seeing new places and more of the country maybe more rewarding than having regular run with regular customers. Having said that, regular customers can become friends and more likely to help you out when needed!

Apologies in advance if I’m missing the bleeding obvious, but when was the age restriction for driving class 1 trucks (or class 2 for that matter) reduced to 18■■?
I can’t find anything on the DSA or DVLA websites that suggest that you have to be anything but 21 or over to drive HGV’s for hire or reward.
Totally confused . . . . .
The change of 18 came to coincide with the start of the Driver CPC (2009) and means drivers can drive all classes of vehicles at that age providing they complete the Initial Driver CPC qualification.
I thought that driving LGV’s between the ages of 18 and 20 had to be okayed by the area traffic officer or what ever they are called (Joan, Beverley and co) and then you were restricted to their area.

Orate thanks, yeah that’s what I’m doing. I have a neighbour that works for them and said my runs would be different trailer from tipping/walking floor trailer with animal bedding - bio power station fuel, low loader for moving there crushers, excavators and frot loaders and scrap tipper. Doing local and runs to otherside of country.
Pros of this job is ill always have work, nice clean new lorry, home everyday people I know.
Cons not as much pay as the tramping work! And bit more manual work involved but I’m not afraid of work like many!
Thanks a lot will on if I need some help or advice mate
Well done on passing your test and on finding work.
If it was me I would do the brick/block job on tramping, youll get to find out if its what you want and then be able to decide if you only want day work later, when the wife and sproggs arrive.

The nub of it seems to be that in 2009 they (UK GOV) decided that there weren’t enough young people wanting to be HGV drivers and seeing as how some truck drivers were still being paid rates that were above the minimum wage (shocking!!! ) there obviously wasn’t enough competition in the HGV job market. So in a bid to increase the availability of drivers and hence further drive down wages and conditions for those already employed as drivers they decided to drop the minimum age to 18.
I’d take it, like a shot. The thing with opportunities like this is that you can always walk away if it turns out it’s not for you, but you might never get the same opportunity again if you turn it down. Tramping can be fun, once you get yourself sorted.

Would you not have covered tachos in your cpc? As your a new driver!
Are you not distance restricted ie 50km from base until your 21?
Very little drivers’ hours coverage in Mod. 2 & Mod. 4 which form the Initial DCPC qualification triggering DQC issue -then from that date he has 5 years in which to complete his 35 hours Periodic DCPC training - which could (at his or companies discretion) include drivers’ hours and/or tachograph operation.
No longer any distance restriction for drivers under 21 yrs. The minimum age for LGV driver training was dropped in 2009 as part of DCPC implementation. Also scrapped the Young Driver Scheme which placed distance restrictions on new drivers under 21 yrs - this was replaced by DCPC minimum age 18 years - open to allcomers.
matmat - well done sir, there are opportunities out there for youngsters with your attitude - trouble is the youngsters generally don’t have your background/skill/appetite/opportunites/whatever else…you are the future of road haulage, go for it!!!

Went for back for the job yesterday, they took an old gent on because there insurance was obv cheaper for them. Not a problem got a few others in the pipe line!!!
But yes thanks mate I know what young lads are like from working and learning the building trade for 3 years. Had 1 lad 18 learning bricklaying in college. Wouldn’t go on scaffolding! Took 1:30minutes to bring 3 barrows of bricks down & at 15 I was laying tiles on a roof!!
Since passing class 2 iv rang over 200 contacts for work. I’m not the type to sit back and wait, got ambition & get up and go!!
Thank you anyway fella only need to wait this week for my plastic back and I’ll be heading to a job!
