Finding work 18 year old lad class 1

Hi fellow truckers
Now I’m expecting some if not a lot of abuse here being a new boy lol.
Just got my class 1 licence and been offered some tramping work driving brick grab 5 days a week.
Question is.
isit something that would suit a new young driver rather than just for e.g normal day work on the brick grab ?.
Thanks in advanced fellow truckers

Grab with both hands for at least two years

I have no idea whether you’ll be suited to the work or not. You’ve beaten the odds so make the most of your opportunity…

Firstly: Well done for getting your class 1.
Doing brick grab work sounds like a good first job to me.
Lots of nasty reversing onto building sites will pay off in the long run.
Using a brick grab is just like hiab work, So that’s another string to your bow.
I was thrown in at the deep end, it wasn’t easy. But it was the best thing i could have done.

Go for it. and good luck.

Grab the job and run with it be good experience, have lost count of how many posts are on here about lads getting thier class 1 then not finding work.
You have done well to get the job congratulations  just goes to show there is jobs for newly qualified drivers .

I’d be extremely wary of any job offer that involved brick grab & tramping because there is very little need for it.

You will be transporting bricks &/or blocks from the stockyard to wherever they’re needed, I know this industry like the back of my hand & even know a few OD’s that specialise in the long distance aspect of the job.

I don’t know of ANYONE, neither OD, contract haulier, or direct employer that has the insurance in place to take on an 18yr old, let alone anyone who’s got less than 2yrs driving experience.

This job you’ve been offered must be a very rare thing indeed !

Jesus didn’t expect to have such quick replies!
Thanks for replies guys. Iv had my class 1 since Wednesday and got th call on Thursday ‘hi Mathew are you still looking for class 1 work ? Can you come in Saturday for an interview’

Not taken the job yet as I didn’t know weather too, being away 4 nights & not knowing 100% yet with tacho & what if need to take and all the other parts. Understand the hours and breaks just don’t know when it comes to finding somewhere to park ect.

Plus I’d get my hiab certificate aswell .

Any advice would be spot on guys!

At least you have got up there and passed your class one at 18. Nobody can give you any abuse for that. You will gain experience tramping, listen to advice from the old ones, take it and use it if you want.
Take another shunt if you need to, better to be sure than bend a unit.
Get out and have a look, don’t be pressured by anyone else.

Do a digi tacho course or ask your employer.

Not the easiest job in the world but if you can handle it you will be able to get on with most stuff, tight sites etc.,crack on give it a shot, all the best.

Cheers, would snap his hand off for the job just dunno what I’m gonna be like sleeping, don’t wanna end up not sleeping then being tired as … For driving.
If it isn’t for me can I hop it ?
& yeah was taught to take a shunt, don’t be a hero so that itsnt a problem.
Some people say about not alowed to use gas camping cooker in cab as there made to sign a contract not too or something. Is this currect ?.

Cheers pal gonna mull it over a pint tomorrow! Lol

Would you not have covered tachos in your cpc? As your a new driver!

Are you not distance restricted ie 50km from base until your 21?

Plenty of us young ones about on this forum, you’ve done very well in finding work. Tramping not too difficult when you get used it it. Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t a fair margin of the work you’ve specified done using drawbars? If so, parking in services may well turn out to be a real pain since they tend to be longer, trailer bends quicker and takes longer to bring back into shape (cambridge services on the A14 springs to mind).

Quite a few drivers will help you out if you get stuck, so don’t be afraid to ask & check out the many threads in the new & wanabee drivers forums for some good advice.

& distance restricted, no. There was a young driver scheme that did that a few years ago but was phased out with introduction of DCPC.

Oops sorry finger trouble.

Wasn’t sure if the distance rule had changed thanks

Not done any periodic training yet.
Got my cpc card allready

Go for it. Opportunities like this should be seized. There’s so many posts saying people can’t get work/experience and it might not come around again for you. If it’s not for you you’ve lost nothing other than a few nights away from home.

Hi mate, iv not done any work as of yet, had experience with a loaded class 2 and class 1 trucks when training though.
And yes they are draw bar grabs, I feared this to be honest although on my class 1 + 2 training I only ever did 2 reverses and cracked it, found it easy and never did it again till test. Obvs they wasn’t drawbar a so yeah another thing that is abit off putting as I don’t want to make my self look a ■■■■ when it comes to reversing lol! ‘Cant I just go in a straight line’ lol
And yeah I’m the type to not ask in a way unless I absolutely had too! Think I’ll skip it and get some experience on tipper class 1 as iv been asked to drive with a scrap companies driver for a couple weeks to learn ropes ect think that will be my best bet! .
I’ll check that forum out tonight fella thanks for your help and advice!

If you’ve got a working microwave in the truck then ok. If not, then it’s a gas stove job just keep it hidden. And be careful with it.

Two job offers■■? You got family in the business?
