Felixstowe crane collapse photos

You may remember the incident on 3rd March when the vessel Zen Hua 23 broke her moorings and her load of new cranes for the docks somewhat ironically demolished the existing cranes on Languard terminal. Well they’re still there, guess they’ll take a while to remove!!! I also added a pic or two of the docks as it was such a nice day!!

…and here’s a pic of the same quay in happier times (last summer actually!!)

I have never had the pleasure of container work neither have I been to Felixstowe but that last pic has opened my eyes abit! :open_mouth:

I counted 6 ships but there must me THOUSANDS of containers there and thats just the ones on the ships, and each container has to be transported by a truck from the dock AND back again!!

So WHO is making all the (ZB) money!! Over a year there must be millions of container movements through out the UK and yet the rate is, what, £1.50 - £2.00 per mile if you are lucky!!

Somebody is making some serious wedge somewhere!!

Hello mate,

Well here are some figures then:

The MSC ship you can see in the photo was docked over the weekend and left today. It is a 9200 TEU ship, that is it can carry 9200 containers fully laden.

As you can see it’s not exceptionally large compared to the other ships docked there. Maersk have now got 12,000 TEU ships.

When you consider that the record for one ship at Felixstowe is about 5,500 in one docking then you get an idea of the scale of the operation.

The depressing bit - almost all of it is coming in, not going out. Who’s making the money?? The Chinese I reckon!!

Good pictures mate, and yr right it isn’t the hauliers making the money, well not little guys like me any way. As for clearing up that crane? I’m sure the local ■■■■■■ will soon clear that up!!

thats a good load of scrap there dont suppose you know how much one of them weight 100+ ton i’d have thought minimum

it wont be a nice job cutting that lot up… the fumes from the paint will have your eyes streaming in minutes. :imp:

Each crane weighs just over 850 tonnes. or 8 ■■■■■ transit loads !

Or 8 ■■■■■ transit loads !

PMSL

Regarding the ‘who makes the money’ question, there are people making money out of the boxes, you only have to read Commercial Motor to see that.

Look at these articles to see what the big players in containers are making. But I suspect fuel prices will be killing some of them at the moment??

were the crance drivers on the dockside ok or was it just lucky that no

Good pics.

I thought it quite ironic that the sign on the Crane (Pic 4) says OMG - Oh My God!! :stuck_out_tongue:

And nobody will see a thing  AS USUAL :unamused:

i consider myself to be quite calm and easy going, but when i used to go
in that hell hole of a place i finished up wanting to give someone a dig
 :imp:

Excellent photos, reminds me when i was little going to the docks with me old man in the lorry
I feel sorry for the guys parked up when its windy… uncle was stuck there 35 hours the other week… mind you, someones only got to ■■■■ there and its closed

i may be wrong but i dont think the cranes are manned when a ship comes along side, probably for this very reason

sometimes feels like cranes are unmanned when a truck pulls alongside too!Bet the dockers all got woke up when that lot came down!!

You’re wrong, the depressing bit is that after years of going in and out of 77pk (norfolk line) and seeing all the box jockeys queing up to get on or off trinity “suckers”, I’ve now joined them, :unamused:
