What the learnad gentleman is trying to say is, A plobber can’t get down there, so by his reckoning nobody can, even tho you have photographic proof, doesn’t mean you did it. The fairies guided you,…
No. We do lanes like that over a dozen times every day of the week with 32 and 44 tonner tag + rear steers. Most of the farmers will cut back the hedgerows and any intruding tree branches at least once a year, usually August/September time, which they do do at the Waddington end as access is fine. But the bit in the middle doesn’t need any truck access as there are no working farms along there so no-one bothers. It’s got absolutely nothing to do with “plobbers”, the clearance between the branches was less than the truck width and unless you’re dumb, you don’t force a truck down a lane like that when the branches are 1" thick unless you want to destroy your truck . If he’s truly got all the way down the lane from Waddy end then I can say with 100% certainty that the foliage has undergone a massive cut back in between times as he would have arrived with both mirrors missing and a very battered cab if he’d gone down there when it was really overgrown.
Anyway no idea why this is even a discussion point. The thread is about favourite roads to drive, not bragging about narrowest/steepest place you’ve taken your truck.
Carryfast:
Through Valais in Switzerland from Martigny and over the Simplon.
The Dalmatian coast road from Trieste to Dubrovnik.
Lots more but those are special.
Simplon pass is cracking.
As the ole story goes:
I was driving along, and saw a truck winding up a road above me, and thought “Glad I ain`t gotta climb up there”…half an hour later…
Ahh the 702 from caronbridge lol always hated that end always took the junction opposite the road down to the castle missed out that awful junction, all that area moniave etc over to morrington way was my stamping ground for 20odd yrs on wagons, as said not everyone’s favourite especially up durisdeer way up the glen, It fell to me to sit wae new starts going up these roads and many experienced distance hands didn’t like the “50mph one mirror and both hands on wheel “ experience . But I loved the views something new every time. Jimmy
Carmarthen to Caernarfon via Builth Wells, Machynlleth and Porthmadog a great run up especially when you tip 22 of the 26 pallets in Carmarthen wouldn’t fancy it with to much weight on tho.
Having been very lucky to deliver barley to the whisky distillers in Scotland and run back down the road from many sawmills all dotted around Scotland I love the A93 coming from Aboyne to Perth, although we loaded wet bark from Aboyne for Diss the challenge of bringing it down that road just to Perth upright was a skill in it’s own right.
I have many to many to choose from if I’m honest.

Been all over Europe and on many amazing roads but my favourite in a truck? The A5 though North Wales. Almost never used the A55 when A5 was an option. Know it like back of my hand. Though I had to relearn it when I went from having a 440 under me to a 750! Had a couple of seat of pants moments
As a native of that region, have you ever traversed the ‘Horseshoe-Pass’ perchance? I found myself on that road,en-route from,l think (Llangollen) a couple of years ago and found it a tad heavy going, not ideal in winter, but l was informed by the haulage firm.where l was collecting some recycled stuff from nearby…‘bloody hell,we don’t go that way’…guffaw, chortle type of thing. Not advisable in heavy snow l imagine but I’ve seen considerably worse .Always intrigued me tbh.Splendid scenery nonetheless.
Got to agree with A5 especially in the 1970/80’s era, the only way from brum to Holyhead docks with loaded artic car ■■■■■■, could,nt get through Conway too high. I believe alot of the a5 has bypassed some of the villages but I should think some of the more northern places are still there especially that little narrow bridge on a u bend.
Horseshoe bridge, have come south over it with a empty ■■■■■■ just for the craque but only in the summer, you could drive for miles then and only meet the locals hardly any heavy stuff, lovely area.
To add some foreign ones after a think. Well, Norwegian ones, my favourite country. Trollstigen is one great one. Interesting in a coach at height of summer. We used to do a steeper road with about 14 hairpins on a single track road in a coach but can’t remember where it is. Used to be a timetable for bigger vehicles, you could only go down certain times and up others.
As for most beautiful place I have ever seen that would be Lofoten Islands. Nearly didn’t go as 3 hour ferry was at 9pm and I was on holiday, I didn’t want to be getting off a ferry in the middle of the night, too much like work! But some fellow travelling Brits i met told me it was a must visit. Ferry goes to south tip and they told me you get amazing scenery from get go with ‘The Wall’, ferry basically sails towards a cliff, couldn’t see top as their was a high mist. Came off, parked up in a lay-by (once a tamper always a tramper )went to sleep in pouring foggy rain. Work up 5 hours later to this
This is the land of the midnight sun and a very memorable drive was the road up to Nordkapp, it was a trip and destination I have dreamed about since I was a small child. The midnight sun is a bit magical. A lot magical. If ever you’ve wanted to go to Norway do it, when you can, it is EVERYTHING you expect/hope it to be ten times over.
24 hours of daylight didn’t help temperature though, was still about 1°c. In July,
Next stop from here is North Pole, unless you hit Svalbard.
Came back through Finland and Sweden for ferry from Denmark. It was supposed to be a 2/3 month trek round Europe by my old lady van wasn’t exactly reliable. Because of that it was one of most stressful holidays I’ve ever done, but I’d also best. In northern Sweden I needed recovery after she just stopped. They recovered me to a VW main dealer garage and after an hours work I went to pay. He’s said no no, this is free, we’ve all loved seeing your old van so far from home. So while it was stressful I’d do it again, in the van as she’s such a great conversation starter in a way a modern one won’t be for another 40 years! (She was a 30th birthday present to myself. Has been looking for one for a few months then all of a sudden she popped up at a specialist in Swansea and fact she was born in same year as me seemed fate. Trip was 2008. Still own her but she’s in need of a post restoration now being 43. Much as I could do with done restoration)

I’d come from carsphairn on the 729 to monavie not miether but you have to stop if you meet owt ,definitely if you meat owt nice anyway
I do envy the timber wagon lads and some of the scenery they must get to see - would be a great job in the summer , not so sure how much fun it would be in the winter in the forests .

Another vote for the A5 through North Wales. Very early in my lorry driving career I was employed on the PC World distribution contract, working out of Northampton. One of the regular weekly runs was a 2-hit job to Bangor and Wrexham and I always looked forward to getting that run.

Gibraltar to Marbella / Malaga along the coast road, then to Almeria , where Hollywood movie makers filmed cowboy films , then to Murcia /Alicante to the French border at La Jonqueria .
Another run is avoiding the border at Irun when loading cakes from Huesca in Spain then over the border with views similar to being in Switzerland or Austria to Pau and Bordeaux .
Had to be the A93 Spittal of Glenshee to Braemar for me in either winter or summer some of the best scenery in Europe. Only been over a couple of times in a truck but go that way quite a bit as only live 20 mins drive from Glenshee these days.
I know some of you will spit your tea out but I’ve cycled up as well from the Glenshee side.
Merry Christmas to all on here and big thanks to all the help and advice given recently. Been back behind the wheel of late.
Oh and a big thanks to All you guys & Girls keeping this country running during COVID never under estimate the importance of road transport to this country.
Just remembered another. A6 from Lisbon to Spanish border. Fantastic modern road, super smooth and by time you get past built up areas you’re almost the only person on it
Luke , did you ever use the death trap road called the IP 5 from the Spanish border at Villar Formosa to Averio and on to Porto ?
The mad Spanish would have their drivers door open going down the mountains , ready to bail out due to brake fade ?
I got nicked there for one km per hour over the 50 km ph speed limit by an unmarked police car, then they took me 25 miles away to the nearest bank to pay their coffee money .
