Standard procedure under PACE.
Not really relevant given the tragic circumstances but I wouldn’t of thought it was possible to tip a tram over given that it’s on rails

Any railed vehicle will tip over if it tries to take a bend at excessive speed.

He may find fame as the first ever tram driver to be charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

I used to be a tram driver for Croydon Tramlink. Coming westbound from New Addington, you would go through Sandilands tunnel at 80kph. You then had to slow to 20kph for the sharp left hand curve at Sandilands Junction.
My guess is that the driver has either nodded off, or momentarily lost concentration and failed to apply the brake. I often used to wander what would happen if I failed to slow down for the junction? I guess I know now.
Driver fell asleep according to that article?
Do these trams not have the same dead man button system you get on trains?
mabey he has a similar medical condition to the glesgae binny…
either way,id assume he will be given the same treatment as if he was driving a truck…i.e…crucified unless he can use the unions, and bad press for the tram operators to wriggle out of it.

A dead man will fix the stop or go situation of sleeping driver but it won’t fix the issue of a driver who is alert enough to keep going but not alert enough to control its speed. It seems obvious that the things should be speed limited to 30 mph max.

The deadman on the tram activates after three seconds. Too long in which to slow from 80 to 20kph.
I’m surprised the trams don’t have automatic braking on sections where speed needs to be very sharply reduced for a bend or junction.
Apparently he blacked out .hmmm
I’m guessing it overturned at about 14:10 in this video. It is a pretty rapid drop in speed required to take the bend.

Why? The Croydon tram network has off street sections that run on old railway alignments where the trams are permitted to do 80 km/h.
Looking at the overhead photos that is a really sharp bend for a tram. Condolences to all involved.
