Fans of Fodens

kevin fullard:
well boys what about them old fodens, i can saftely say foden gave me a bit more than erf which i am a fan of and have ran since 1978 starting with a b, series the edge foden gave was they could supply an oversize rad and i had that cause crossing the alps twice a week ment climing mountains inside tunnels to get to the top an once trucks had run before me there was no cool air to keep the truck cool, a number of trucks had blown up already doin the same so i wasnt havin any of that. also i didnt want seal for life front axle bearings, running a truck till the bearings seizes aint a good idea then have to pay god knows what for recovery it aint cheap across the channel. then they had to put plastic header and sump tanks on the radiator then there was the micky mouse gear linkage must of used parts of a sewing machine for that. then you couldnt get a roadranger gear box . it seams all the things that was right with the erf they change. the things that needed doing like the cab- exta livin space an storage and such must have bin an after thought.but all the british trucks were guilty. if i could have brought a new b series ide have that. with foden i had o/s rad 525 ■■■■■■■ an jake 18 sp roadranger h/d props double drive diff locks cross locks and in the dead of night minus 30 snowin crossin the alps loaded you get one shot and thats it. and foden well they delivered for me cause i allways wanted british trucks i allways loved our country i think i you want to take from the pot you got to put some in and i held on as long as i could… be safe god bless…

Foden pictures here please! Steamers through to the last DAF cabbed imposters…

Did anyone out there ever experience this problem with these tippers? Smiths drivers of the late 70s reported that the cabs bounced like they were trying to pull wheelies? Have heard these were designed to be mixers and that this cab was re-introduced because fodens were short of cash to build new models…

A few photos that may be of interest.

Foden S18 dated 1950, Gardner 6LW, originally built as an eight wheeler that worked for Eastwoods Cement, before ending up on the fairground scene.
Sold at Smiths auction as a 6 wheeler in a very poor state as you can see from the photo.

Rebuilt during the 90’s by my good bud Andrew Turner, in the darkest parts of West Yorkshire on a very limited budget and very very limited facilities as can be witnessed by the photos. Easier to work outside for better light and space!!! Only for sign writing was a professional brought in, otherwise all done on a shoe string.

The Foden is still around has been seen at the London to Brighton and Gaydon and still able to collect a lot of praise, showing how good the rebuild actually was.

I will post a few more photos of Andrew’s later Fodens.

PART TWO

Foden S20 dated 1960, Gardner 6LX, started life for Brain Haulage of Essex, ending up on the fairground scene like a lot of other Fodens. This rebuild as a joint venture between Tony Bairstow and Andrew Turner during the 90’s, talk about gluttons for punishment, two on the go at the same time, same restricted budget and facilities. Still owned by Tony and Andrew and a regular on the Trans Pennine Rally.

PART THREE

Foden S20 dated 1959, 6x4 Gardner 6LX, started life as a mixer for Arden Quarries in New Mills, Derbyshire, again ending up with the fairground fraternity. Bought in 2001 and rebuilt over 3 years, facilities not improved much or access to funds to do the work. Notice the state of the cab which required a few straw bales inside to support the roof on its travel from Retford to Bingley and a few well positioned straps to prevent any more bits dropping off on route. Sold after a few short years of enjoyment in order to fund the next project, which was unfortunately not another Foden!!!

Hi Gloves, Thanks for posting the pics of LNU, I have seen most of them before but not all !
Andy made an outstanding job of the restoration and LNU is an absolute credit to him. When I bought the lorry from him in 2008 it was a dream fulfilled as I’ve always wanted my own S20 and now its in the livery of Elliott’s of York it looks very much like XVY102 that I worked on as a drivers mate way back in the 60s.
After the signwriter had finished I had him put Andy’s name on as the restorer as a tribute to him and the lorry has won one or two prizes at various shows that I have attended, but its down to Andy’s hard work and ingenuity and I take no credit for it at all, I just enjoy owning a fabulous motor !
Regards Tony H.

here’s some photo’s of long departed north east firm Salkeld Brothers taken in the early 70’s, the vast majority of their fleet consisted of Foden trucks. regards prattman.

Hello Larry,
Did you go up Crawleyside loaded towards Edmundbyres with the Foden loaded.

Regards

F Troop.

Some Fodens in Western Australia. 8 wheel prime mover with a small milk tank behind the cab loaded to 41.5 tons. Gardner 180 and 12-speed air shift epicyclic box. Taken in 1974.

Another Foden in Western Australia. Gascoyne Trading chiller truck outside the Overlander Roadhouse at the 457 mile peg north of Perth in 1968. Note the water bag on the bumper bar. This one was fitted with a Gardner 150 with a stick-shift 12-speed epicyclic box loaded to 36 tons.

Great Aussie Foden’s mate,good one.

Here’s a video of a S83 eight legger and three axle trailer still working carting fire wood here in NZ. Turn it up.
