The last rad I had was from Macclesfield rads, they did a good job and its been on for quite a few years now,
Regarding the intercooler moose, call in and have a look at the one I have,if its the same take it and try, but the one I have has steel side plates and its ok to mount onto the old type 4000 rad anyway…tip, remove the top hose from the engine and fit it to the rad before you lift it in,
There was a guy selling a good rad and intercooler which was still bolted together on ebay…not sure if its still on there?

Cheers Nigel

Anyone know how Moose got on with his rad?

I rang them on friday, i have got to count the bolts in the header tank and get the dimensions of the core for an accurate quote on mon, the chap was helpfull and did say that he could re weld and re furb the intercooler as it has only split on the welds as far as i know, when i pull it to bits i will have a better look!
the chap said that there were 2 core sizes fitted around the age of mine, the smaller iro £768 or £986 for the larger one, not tried ringing round yet due to lack of time on friday

We used to take our rads to a place up on Ashbourne Airfield Moose, I guess that they have now gone? They normally fitted the top tank the wrong way round so we had to remove and refit them ourselves! :unamused:

Pete.

not sure if anyone is still doing them at ashourne, if it’s the place i’m thinking of they used to do oil coolers as well, that being said i never went so i would be unsure where it was in the first place

Hi Moose it was £450 plus v at markham vale for E14 recore.perhaps not so expensive after all.

would you send me the number please i may give them a try!
it’s a fair size rad an an e14 i would think

Moose, I think the big core rad is 5 bolts wide on the header tank, those prices seem quite high to me as they only have to bolt your top and bottom parts to the core, the weak part is normally corrosion or cracks to the bottom housing.

the guy did say about the 5 bolts on the big core, the price seems a bit steep to me for a bolt together job!

I’ll ask a couple of people on Monday Moose

I seem to recall at Ballidon when the Foden Haulmaster’s came through to us with the R/R 265 engine some had been fitted with the wrong radiators from new! They had Gardner 4 row ones whereas the Rolls had 6 rows so we had to put new cores (supplied by Foden) into the rads. A boring job with all those nuts and bolts on the top and bottom tank’s, but better than a soldered joint!

Pete.

Muckaway:
W844 was always a nice lorry to drive, until the clutch brake got worn it was probably the easiest crash box Smiths’ had. The ■■■■■■■ Celect 340 it had was a bit on the thirsty side unless you didn’t stray above 50mph as it was originally an 8speed. It’s sister wagon survives in the Great Malvern are, operated by J.Prosser.
Armstrong, when in the market for another ex Smiths motor, lookout for a 54 reg 6w Alpha…

Is that the Alpha that you drove Nathan? The time I have put into this one has made me realise its the last rebuild I will do, I will run this one now for as long as I can get parts for it…hopefully for quite some time yet, the engine in that 4000 left the factory as a 380 and Fodens shut it down to 340, they used to do this so they could charge the customer for power upgrades on a new order, I just re mapped it to 400 and now it pulls like its empty all the time but you have to keep your foot off and think of the consumption, the double overdrive is spot on too as it now purrs along at 1350rpm at 56mph and will run down to 50mph loaded before you have to drop half a gear to stay in the green band,
Did the other one have a CAT engine Nathan?

Lovely 8 wheeler in typical fairground setting, another Foden behind, & a Sed-Atki 400 in the background.
