Fair

I believe that harsher penalties may be imposed on professional (vocational) drivers than on car drivers for the same offence. e.g. while a car driver faces a licence suspension after accumulating 12 points, a lorry drivers may face a suspension after accumulating 6 points. Has anyone here experienced this?

I reckon they think that as a pro you should know better and have higher standards.
On the other hand as a pro you stand a lot more chances of gaining points for whatever reason, because of the fact you are on the roads more often than a non pro…so not sure that it is fair, if it does exist.

Can’t say that I’ve heard of this tbh, that’s not to say that it’s not being mooted of course.
Iirc there’s a similar thing already in place for new licence holders whereby 6 points equals a ban.

I seem to remember reading something about that not so long ago but cannot remember where or when.
Got to say it may not be a bad idea. Maybe make some of the ones who think it’s ok to break the rules think twice before doing so.
All in all they should bring harsher sentences for all groups and maybe the roads might become a safer place to be.

Its a great idea…hopefully it will start to dilute the dregs of society that call themselves Lorry drivers.
There is a lot of dross driving heavys at the moment.

Easy to spot, just look for poverty spec motors, usually from a fleet and the steering attendant wearing a hi vis and a gormless gawp, ear piece optional.

You have done your DCPC
You hold a licence to drive one of the largest vechiles on the road .
You are supposed to be a “professional driver”
My question would be " Why would you think that higher standards woudn’t apply to you ?"
Its time the dodgers , rule breakers etc are weeded out of this industry as only when the last of them have gone will those who are left be able to command a decent wage .
In short - "Shape up or F*** Off "

DCPC ? A kid could get it . means nothing.

HGV/LGV licence. Anyone can get one but not everyone has the abilty to control or drive one properly.

Professional driver. Hard to spot these days.

Dodgers? Not entirely sure what you mean by that?

Rule breakers. Far too many going unpunished and need to be weeded out and put off the road.

Decent wage? Possible but the best jobs get take usually by decent drivers with a good record and very hard to come by.
Lorry drivers will never be on top pay. Never have done , never wil be.

DCPC - Driver Certificate of Professional Competence and is a qualification for professional LGV drivers. Legislation was introduced in September 2009 with the aim of improving and maintaining high standards of driving and road safety across Europe.

Have a read of that - thats the first result you find when you type DCPC into Google .
Yes I know and you know it means absolutely nothing but to anyone outside the industry it means we have been trained to do our jobs and as such should be operating to a higher standard on the road .

HGV/LGV licence. Again you had to take extra training to get this - see above .

Professional driver. - is that not what we(lorry drivers in general) want to be seen as ?

Dodgers / rule breakers - those happy to bend break the rules .

Decent wage? Possible but the best jobs get take usually by decent drivers with a good record and very hard to come by.

Those are the drivers who have worked hard , kept their nose clean done things by the book , some might even call them Professional drivers .
While the idiots , dross , dodgers , rule breakers are still here wages won’t change

Lorry drivers will never be on top pay. Never have done , never wil be.And with an attitude like that they never will be

Hang on I know all about it having driven wagons for about 40 years. Did my DCPC because I had to but I could do my job perfectly well before doing it. Taught me nothing because I already knew the rules and regs.
In my opinion standards have dropped significantly in recent years. DCPC has not helped most.

HGV/LGV test. Extra training? It can be done in 5 days and has been done in less. Again standards are not that high in these types of tests. If I can pass it is not hard.

Wages will never change unless you suddenly need a degree to drive a lorry and it seems doubtful the idiots will be here for a while.

Sorry for the negative views but I am afraid that is the way it is and anyone who thinks otherwise is deluded.

Spot on Jakethesnake…i just see it as another piece of plastic we have to carry…it taught me nothing as well…just obeying the rules laid down by those with nothing to justify their wages: Seemed a good idea at the time

DCPC should be binned and replaced with a yearly practical exam to prove you are up to scratch.

Lad I know has 14 points still has his licence and still drives. Everyone of them is for speeding and mostly when driving a lorry. He’s kept the licence because of mitigating factors the main one being if he losses his licence he’ll loss his job and then will be unable to support his family and pay the mortgage.
Gaining 12 points doesn’t always mean you’re losing your licence.

Never heard of this before, most firms allow you to have a max of 6 points on your licence before you start with them, does this mean they allow you to drive whilst banned?

Didn’t the French truck drivers kick off a few years ago and ended up with an agreement whereby they wouldn’t have a ban imposed until they had reached 24 points,or something along those lines?

There was protests along those lines for sure. But I don’t think they were successful. French drivers start with 12 points but loose them for offences. Zero points, no licence. 4 points recuperation possible on a course.
I’m sure others can say definitely if that’s correct or not.

Load of BS,if I was looking at getting 6 points I’d surrender my HGV element of it meant I’d keep my driving licence…I’m sure many others would too.

That’s one of the reasons we are in the state we are. The idiots that speed, why? whatever the limit stick to it. The more you rush about the more you are expected to do it and so it goes on. The result is that you either get points or you have a serious accident and lose your licence.

i seem to remember in the dim and distant past H.G.V. drivers had two licences CAR/HGV totally seperate and could accrue upto 12 points on each but of course thats been streamlined away in our Brave new world
as far as d.c.p.c. some of it is helpful and interesting but its bloody boring
being called a "professional " is complete ■■■■■■■■ if im a professional pay and treat me as a professional not as a scapegoat or an inconveniance to be tollerated under sufferance

The mind boggles at the stupidity of someone who has 14 points on his licence when the livelihoods of him and his family depends on it. If that isn’t an indication of how low the standards to entry are I don’t know what is.

I know a bloke who cleans people’s drives for a living with a trailer-mounted high-pressure washer that he tows with a pickup-type thing. Without fail he drives home on a Friday evening after several pints in the pub. Crazy.
