Failing to stop?

So yesterday I was travelling down the Inside Lane of the A40 there was a car in front of me and a bus Infront of him. The bus pulled into a stop but in my opinion didn’t pull in far enough, the car passed him fine but as I was in 7.5t I clashed mirrors as I passed him. My option was either slam On my brakes or pull into the lane next me both of which would have endangered other road users. I proceded a few hundred yards up the road and pulled In where it was safe. I checked my vehicle and there was no damage. The bus continued past a couple of minutes later and did not stop. I called the depot and reported it to them and have been to the police and reported it there too in order to cover myself. But my worry now is that I could possibly done for failing to stop directly at the scene. I suffer with extreme anxiety and is making me feel quite ill. If anyone can help me I’d be most grateful

It sounds like you’ve done everything right and importantly the police were informed so chill out and relax .

The only thing you did wrong was fail to anticipate that a bus might not make it perfectly into the stop.

Seriously that is a rookie mistake :open_mouth:

If there had been any damage, you are only one going to be at fault.

That part of the road the lanes a fairly narrow for a 3 Lane carriageway. I was only going about 15mph when I passed him. I knew my body would clear otherwise I wouldn’t have passed, but obviously the mirrors protrude out further the than the body on both vehicles.

Lesson learned, either Stop behind protruding bus’s or plan ahead & get around them (without hitting them [emoji57])
Personally I anticipate that they are going to stop in the near future (bit like night follows day) & I’m always ready to take evasive action [emoji6]

If you stopped & he didn’t, you probably just turned his mirror round & he just pulled it straight, don’t loose any sleep over it.

Bumping mirrors is nothing. The bus continued past because no damage was done most likely. Shouldn’t worry about it. Besides, you did stop, you really do have nothing to worry about

I did time on the buses over here and some of the stops are nigh on impossible to get into properly without reversing in :unamused: I don’t know how you managed to hit him though. As said, a rookie mistake.

As others have said, the only thing you failed to do, was to anticipate the action of the Bus correctly, as you get more experienced that should come more natural to you. Clashing mirrors aint the biggest of errors, and a lot of buses have anti shatter plastic mirrors, just as food for thought, imagine how many times they must belt their mirrors to make it policy to fit those god awful things :unamused:

I was a bit more concerned for you over this statement. If you are suffering from anxiety, transport may not be the wisest of jobs to come to, but setting that aside, the fact that you have and are maybe interested in furthering your career in transport, hence being interested in this forum, then its important that you can control your anxiety. Just remember that at the end of the day, this is just a job, granted one that gets under your skin, your health is more important, so try to not let any aspect of it get under your skin, and try to find a friend in the industry or a colleague, so that you can sound off to someone who can give you good advice, and settle your concerns, before they get blown out of all proportion within your own mind

When following a bus, always expect the dump ■■■■ to pull in at a moments notice, they spend thousands of pounds building bus stops / bays and some drivers never seem to manage to get the arse of the bus parallel

…you need to be reading the road and plan ahead

Because the raised kerb for wheelchairs isn’t at the end of the bus stop hence the arse end sticking out… :unamused:

Could possibly be because the bus driver is fairly inexperienced. Maybe he or she got their licence for free when they passed a higher category?

Dont start that one again  .Bus drivers hang their ar$$es out to block the lane so that they can get out into the traffic again.

Thanks guys, appreciate not being berated too much lol. I’ve been driving for a few years now and admittedly I probably could have anticipated it a little better. I certainly wasn’t expecting it, the bang scared the life out of me. That particular section of the A40 is extremely narrow for 3 lanes, I mean your mirrors are borderline with the white lines, with no real room for error.

On a side note, what will happen with the report I filed with the police? Will they just wait to see if there is a complaint from the bus company, or can they act on their own without hearing anything. My main worry is that I’ve basically incriminated myself by saying I had to continue before I could stop safely. I’ve read some real horror stories of people getting 5 to 10 points fit failing to stop and being charged with careless driving. Ultimately Im trying to do the right thing…

You’re worry too much mate, just chill.

If what you say is true, you probably won’t hear another word about it…

If you have done any damage the bus company will contact your employer, driver or bus cameras will have your reg, if not no problem. Either way the police will not be interested as no one was hurt. I know it’s easy for us to say but I would not worry about it.

I had a bus fly past me in Croydon, I heard his mirror go “twang” but didn’t see any damage or bits coming off. He didn’t stop so neither did I.

I would say that you’ve been responsible, you stopped at the earliest safe area to do so, and contacted the police asap, though I don’t think you needed to, as there was no personal injury. Maybe it could be said that you left the scene without exchanging insurance details, but had the bus driver been so minded, he could have stopped with you, instead of driving by, the fact he didn’t, tells me that he wasn’t bothered about what happened. So I would forget about it, move on, tomorrow is Friday, that’s always good news

Details of the incident have probably arrived on your local traffic commissioner desk, you’ll be invited for a DCH - driver conduct hearing, to explain how you did/didn’t conduct yourself in the seconds after incident bringing the knights of the road industry into disrepute. letter takes up to 2 years to arrive on your doormat, in the letter you’ll be asked fill out form giving your side of the story, mitigating circumstances etc and tick boxes as to the sort of biscuits and type of tea you prefer and what sort music you want playing in background, classical, panpipes etc. They’ll probably show you copy of this trucknet topic, look down at you over their glasses and say “well, I’m waiting buddy start talking” [FACE WITH STUCK-OUT TONGUE AND WINKING EYE][FACE WITH TEARS OF JOY]

And with all the front overhang, trees etc stop you from being able to get parallel to the kerb. Even some of the bus stop signs cause problems.

+1
The number of people who moan about buses not going into a stop properly yet fail to see themselves just why is amazing. Everyones perfect and can do it better when they dont have to bother about the facts or the reasoning behind someone elses thinking.
