Yes, I use it pretty much exactly in the manner you describe. It’s a very handy way to keep in touch with friends and family who are spread out all over. Posting a status update feels less intrusive than cc’ing an email to half a dozen people, plus FB does give a small possibility of making other friends online.
I’m not quite sure about the distinction between “Facebook friends” and “Real friends”. I’ve met three or four people online over the years I’ve been using the internet, on FB and forums like this one, and they have always been people I would have been friends with anyway had we met in person first.
It is also quite handy for finding out someones political standing and wealth, most people post a picture of their house, their car, which pub they drink in and their mobile phone number
im on it quite a bit. used to play the games but kept filling peoples news feeds up with useless crap (bit like my status updates some would agree). got a few mates from school in the army all over the world so keep up to date with them. also keeps me upto date with local gossip

These days I think most FB users have their profile set so that people other than friends can’t see that stuff, and of course friends would know those things anyway.
I’m on it but don’t use it much. Most of my friends on there are people I rarely see, and it can be useful for passing on information. My Dad died a couple of weeks ago and it was much easier letting many people who knew him know via face book than contacting them individually. I can’t get into the whole social networking thingy though and even less farmville. Friends keep asking for help with their farms; but no sign of them when my garden needs digging.
i’m on it to.
i find it a handy way of keeping in touch with family and friends when i’m away on a tour, as we can be away a fair while. also, in this job, friends you make along the way, are often from around the globe, so again, good way to keep in touch.
the farmville, mafiawars ain’t really my thing, but sometimes play scrabble, or texas hold em.
At the risk of sounding very old, I just don’t understand what it’s all about and have no interest in finding out. I don’t know why but it gets on my ■■■■ people going on about being on facebook, facebooking this or that.
A bit like football and motorcycles, both of which have no appeal and somehow people can spend hours talking about both.
I’ve no problem with other people liking any of it, but I just get bored of hearing about it. Sorry.
Strangely I’ve got twitter, I don’t tweet that I’ve just washed my hair, been for a dump, or in fact do anything with it but follow a couple of random things that I have an interest in. I don’t feel the need to go on about what I’ve read on Twitter to all and sundry.
I’m on it and probably addicted! With all the bickering on here it’s a great way to chat to people I actually like! Also it’s handy for talking to the mrs, fb is the only way I can get a word in edgeways.
I’m trying to get used to twitter it’s good for something, probably.
