Europe on Sprinters - few questions

I nearly secured some wee job for couple of weeks (keep your fingers crossed!) doing some sprinter runs all arround Europe. The hourly rate is about what agency pays me for class 2 multidrop (and 50p more than other agency pays for shop deliveries with a lots of hanball) but I have some questions:

  • Some of the longer trips are told to be at “deal rate”. What these rates are? What I can expect for a trip Scotland - Holland, or Scotland - Paris etc?
  • Do I have to carry digi tacho card with me even if I am not driving any tacho vehicles for the whole week?
  • Do the companies running sprinters on express deliveries usually pay overnight allowances?

If I will come to some more questions, I will post them here hoping that someone can answer me…

But I have to say that I am really looking forward to it, I am fed up of driving arround Glasgow all the time

good luck on that, sounds alot better than driving around glasgow/scotland lol.

i would expect them to pay night out for you unless they are paying for digs for you, not sure though.

Thanks

Deal rates sound like trip money, just make sure you agree the rate beforehand.

Would think no but if doing Germany you need to fill in the log book.

Some do, some don’t.
Some don’t expect you to sleep.

Hope this helps.

Deal rates, could mean day rate, dunno never heard of it before, but i done plenty of sprinter work across euroland ,wasn’t too bad when single manned which it was at first, no records of driving ect ever kept, used to do cophenagen > london in 18hrs crazy but we did it, not good though driving through the night after already driven throughout the previous day, that job was trip money based on milage for euro and hourly in uk drive till ya drop is what some do, having done it i wouldn’t do the same again now

I do Europe in a Sprinter every week. I get £30 night out money. Don’t know what deal money is. The only country that can get strict about driving times is Germany. keep a log book of your driving hours just in case. Make sure there are breaks showing
I have never been stopped in any country, just drive sensibly and time will pass nicely. Enjoy…I do! :sunglasses:

know if their needing anyone orys? i need out of here

Will keep you in mind if they will be so busy that one extra driver (me) will be not enaugh

Deal rate could either mean a day rate or a percentage of the job which some companies pay(usually In the region of 25%).

All i do is euro work in a sprinter and am paid a day rate with £20 night out money.

I wouldn’t worry about taking your digicard with unless you will actually use it. I have never used a logbook and have never once been asked to produce one by the german police. The most important thing in germany and europe as a whole is to make sure u have all the required documents for you and your van. Faliure to produce them could lead to a fine.

Hm, thanks.

I am familiar with need of carrying all the documents with me, I am from Poland.

Just wonder about how this log book should look like and what are the driving times for the vans, and if I should use my log book for my driving in germany only? (That’s mean if my legal driving time is 9 hours, and I crossed German border after 50 hours of driving non-stop, should I start my calculations from 0 at this moment? :grimacing: )

If it takes 50 hours of non-stop driving to reach the German border, you’d be better off getting out and pushing rather than bothering about log book entries :grimacing: :grimacing:

Who said I am coming straight from Britain?

10 hours driving 11 duty every day
but if your going a long way dont expect to run legal

10 hours driving and 11 hours duty every day could get a little bit tiring after the first month or two without a weekly rest of any sort :open_mouth: .

Don’t ever expect to run legal in the van, in the eyes of a TM(or at least my new TM who got rid of my wagon for a [zb] out van) the whole point of a van is that you can drive flat out 24hrs a day 5/7 days a week without needing to stop apart from to load/tip/refuel :open_mouth:

Whilst it might sound fun and everybody thinks you’re a legend, believe me from experience it soon catches up with you

Personally I would welcome the introduction of some kind of stricter legislation governing driving hours of vans.

So far it’s not so bad. After quite a few days in that job, I haven’t been driving for longer than 10 hours a day (although my duty was longer, but I wasn’t working all the time - lot’s of waiting in that job  )

And I had even a proper sleep every night…

But I haven’t been far - the furthest down was Plymouth

Did you do Glasgow-Plymouth-Glasgow in a day? That’s good going if you did :sunglasses:

No, I was sent it in the afternoon to deliver at the next day morning. Then I came back, collecting some stuff on the way.

Dont think youve got any worries regarding log books , wtd , breaks etc mate . Before i got my class 1 i used to to steam all over eroupe in my vw caddy out of gatwick and never got any grief off foreign coppers . Best advice i can give is dont attract attention to yourself . Even if youve got to be in munich , for example , for an 8 am drop and youve just got off the ferry at 2am dont push it . Your transport manager is always going to say youve got to be there at 8am cos it makes him look good while hes tucked up in bed . Ive never been given ■■■■ by the consignee if im late . if u feel yourself going to sleep , have a sleep and get there in 1 piece .
My record was bologna to dunkirk 880 miles in 14 hours (thru swiss borders ) straight but i was struggling by belgium !

My approach exactly.

I am lucky to have this interial alarm - sometimes I just feel I have to stop. If you listen to it, you are safe
