euro tax plan

what are your views on my idea of a european wide vehicle tax.
we all moan about the foreign trucks coming here without paying anything towards our roads.
the thing that annoys me when i go abroad is the big differences with road charging from one country to another.
yet we get british mp’s and mep’s saying things like road tolls in the uk are inevitable. WHY?
one single charge every year and you are covered, simple.
we have a tried and tested system, so why can’t the rest of the eu do as we do for a change, instead of us doing what they want?

Would that mean that all the road tax would go to the EU parliament for them to decide who gets what ■■? Hmmm…

it would have to be centralised. distributed in two ways. 1) how many km’s each country has. 2) investment in new roads.

it would be better if those greasy palm tossers in brussells had sod all to do with it, but that can’t happen.

limeyphil:

  1. how many km’s each country has

Hmmm… lots of road space with fewer vehicles would get more than less road space with more vehicles using them !!

good point rog. so each country would have to bid on both points of km’s that they have and proposed traffic usage.

Get real

do you really think that there is any chance at all of geting the Germans to change the Maut sytem that they have just spent many millions and several years of effort in ?

I agree Phil, also I would like to see a SINGLE rate of fuel duty throughout Europe so as diesel costs the same in every country, level playing field and all that.

I think an EU wide tax for all vehicles is a great idea, but each country has its problems and costs, should everyone pay the same price wether a rich or poorer country. I would have thought somewhere such as Germany that gets a lot of traffic just crossing through it is just different to say Scotland. Germany might say we want more money than Scotland, so surly the amount of traffic a country might get should be factored in. I don’t think the system of tax in the UK is so good, my car did a lot of kilometers, the next door chap just went to the shops in his, we would pay the same a year. I now pay my tax as part of my fuel bill each time I fill up, which seems fair to me.

The German system seems a pretty good way of doing things (Tin Hat is firmly on) pay for what you use, if it was extended to all EU countries (the EU could get the UK to pay for the installation costs  ) then log in to the system, going from here to there, thats the cost of taxes, work out the fuel. The EU they would get a pretty good picture on freight movements.

Would an EU tax on fuel do the job better ? - the more fuel purchased in a country would give that country more revenue and that might reflect more accurately the road usage ■■?

I would scrap the vehicle tax and put it all on fuel - no probs then with those who do not pay VED and the more fuel used = more miles driven = more you pay.

that would be the fairest system, but every eu country would have to agree to sell fuel at the same price, maybe +/-5%, just to allow a little competition.
South Africa had a similar system for third party insurance. the bigger the car the more fuel you use, therefore the more insurance you paid. if you wanted comprehensive, then you would put it on your house insurance.

That could work Rog as long as every EU member state has the same level of tax on fuel, and the money should be ringfenced so it is only used for road and infrastructure improvements.

I agree it would have to be a standard EU rate of fuel tax and the money to be used for specific purposes.

The less involvement with Brussels the better. RIP Great Britain

This could get complex… I filled up yesterday, I guess 85p per liter that includes road tax and VAT, but the average wage is £500 a month, if all the EU countries had the same level of income or standards of living then it starts to work better, but there are some vast variations of wealth in the EU, should you drop to the Eastern Europe level of wage structure?

OK, alernative - big toll gates as vehicles enter UK and so much money has to be put in so that the barrier will lift :bulb:
UK vehicles have dart-tag type tax discs so the barriers open automatically without paying

No we should throw all the Eastern European states out of the EU.

i agree to an extent. the eu was a good idea at first. but i think they have gone too far.
making agreements for free trade, agreeing fuel prices and road funding is one thing. but telling everyone from greace to the shetlands to act in the same way, do this, do that, is quite another.
they seem to come up with all kinds of legislation that no one wants to justify their existence.

It ain’t going to happen, fuel prices would have to be standardised throughout the EU, and and this country needs the fuel tax to prop up its public spending, as only a small portion goes back into the road network.

I have to agree with this, your not even joined to Europe…
