ESL Casual

Hi all,

Has anyone done any work as a Stobarts casual?

Just curious as to whats entailed, is it just at the beck and call as and when ?, pay etc ?

Thanks.

I think the Stobarts casual pay rate is the same as their drivers pay rate @ £7.29ph basic, but without the meal allowances etc…

Their rates change depending on Mon-Fri Sat or Sun, Days or nights etc. you do get the meal allowance also. You ring in and tell your planner your availability a couple of weeks in advance. He she will do their best to fit you in over agency and you will find out the day before what time you start and your haulage plan will be on the ISOTRAK when you log in.

If you’re paid the same as a regular Stobart driver it’s £7.29 per hour starting salary which as iDriver states above increases for early, lates, nights and weekends, the regular pay is low to average.

It’s the meal allowances, (a P11DX agreement of £13 tax fee for meals) and attendance/being on time allowance £5 per day? and £25 per night out Tax free…which gives you a decent wage at the end of the week. Hopefully iDriver will put me right on that.

As a casual, 5 nights out and 65-75 hours work a week should get you taking home after tax (with all your nights out and tax free allowances etc) about £675-725 per week.

Some people hate Stobarts and some people love Stobarts. I dont care… for me, It’s just another place where i can invoice a day’s pay!

How much do I get as agency?.. well I get £11 per hour Mon-Fri, Sat is £13.50 and Sunday is £15 all plus VAT at 20%… if you have any nights out it’s a £20 charge + VAT and they will pay for your parking with a receipt +VAT, (I charge VAT on anything i spend to do with expenses which is invoiced as extra charges + VAT!.)
I can invoice for around £800 to £1100 inc Vat for around 65-75 hours per week, depending on night out charges & weekend working hours.

I have worked the odd week or two, here and there as a ‘Self Employed’ agency driver for Stobart’s for the past 8 years, it’s pretty much the same as working at any other large haulage company.( Agency don’t wear uniforms, thank god!).

It’s the luck of the draw getting a good planner, if you get a good one the job is good and you will make decent money, get a bad planner and your life will be an ever-changing, short hour, parked up early (if you’re tramping) living hell. :smiling_imp:

also, be prepared to be cancelled at the last minute…!

Good luck…

Esl casual! They turn you around, drop your trollies and shaft you with NO lube! If you’re in Stretford, go ask at SCA Trafford park and you will meet MR RICHARD HEAD BOLGER in person! :sunglasses: :grimacing: :grimacing: good luck! HTH! :grimacing: :grimacing:

New starters, different rate! £7.75 06:00hrs - 1800 night rate £8.50 £5 fuel bonus less tax, if you get it everyday! Meal allowance £13 nightout £22.50, parking they will reimburse BUT takes 2-3 paydays, so in affect 4-6 weeks as paid fortnightly, so park on MSAs and don’t pay then they SOON PAY! :grimacing: :grimacing: HTH! :open_mouth:

Welcome to the real world of lorry driving.
You usually need to make yourself available for work at most haulage companies for 3 x 13 hours & 3 x 15 hours = 84 hours per week. Lorry drivers need to be prepared to, and do work long, hard hours day and night and its been like that since the mid 80’s…

Know what you are saying contractdriver, it was just the way it sounded, like you have to prepare for 65 - 75 hours every week to earn. I did one shift for ES on a Sunday through the Agency and was paid 16 pounds per hour, ranted there was no meal allowance or any other allowance, but I did get a 15 hour shift out of it.

Good for you Sapper , £240 for a day’s work is great!. :grimacing:
The Agency rates have been dropping the last few years, 3 years ago the average was £18 for a Sunday, and now work is beginning to die off early, I was supposed to be at Stobarts today, but was cancelled at the last minute… as usual.
I’m driving elsewhere tomorrow(£11.50ph) so no worries!.

Before the mid 80’s the driving hours were different, it was 4hrs driving, 30 min break…and before that it was log books… err 25 hours driving and a break when your wagon ran off the road into a muddy field when you fell asleep!.. that’s why i said since the mid 80’s…

Oops yes your right

Thanks for the info chaps

…so the secret of getting a decent wedge for working at stobarts is to invoice them as self-employed?

84 hours @ £7.29ph plus 5x(13+5+25) otherwise is going to involve you getting paid for both breaks and poa by my reckoning - that is, to clear £600 and something quid a week…

No it doesn’t. If you work 84 hrs in a week you aren’t doing one job you’re doing two jobs
and getting £300 odd per week per job. Effectively you’re doing two full time jobs plus a bit more…

How many hours of that 84 can be spent asleep in a layby then?

Not the forty odd hours you’d need to be to be working a standard working week, that’s for sure!! It’s irrelevant anyway, you’re still at work. If you ain’t at home and you’re in/near/around a lorry you’re working…

I really think it’s time drivers were given the respect required to earn a living, without having to work twice the hours most folk do just to earn a reasonable wage.

Then once youve taken off various taxes from that £600+, that £612 top line doesnt look so attractive for an 84hr week

I agree, why don’t you start a petition.
