esl assesment

Had mine today and did great till i ballsed up the reverse, so no job for me with them (yet).

Daft thing is i have been putting them onto bays for the last few weeks with no probs apart from the odd shunt but no dramas generally.
So , i have put it down to nerves kicking in…Great part when the assesor said “its not a test but an assesment, so its a bit like a test” lol

Anybody else had a bout of nerves kick in on assesments and such like ■■?

Back to agencies for now and see what comes up next

Bad luck, next time will be easier I am sure

Where were you hoping to work, out of Goole ?

It was at Newark, as its a bit closer than Goole.

Lucky escape then in my opinion

Lol

I dont understand, you didnt get the job because you had to take a few shunts to get on a bay?

We had a move round at our place a couple of months ago with some of the rigids going and the lads moving onto artics. They had to be assessed first and all of em were ok apart from one lad.
He was sound out on the road and could get in all of the awkward places, he had good road awareness the lot. I went out with him one day and he was fine - even blind siding in at Burton services on the A50. When we got closer to our yard he was a bit quieter than he’d been during the day and you could see him getting wound up - he struggled in the yard to get in bays far easier than the ones out on the road.
He seemed to have a kind of phobia about assessments and exams and struggled whenever the bloke with the clipboard came out.
He ended up having extra training from one of the lads who used to be a hgv instructor and thankfully kept his job

Funny you should say that because the most awkard place i find to reverse is our own yard, same with the last company i worked out.

Basically, i lined myself up incorrectly, flapped and commited to the reverse, rather than taking 2 minutes to relax and stop flapping at 10000 feet. He said because there are tighter spaces out on the road or if trailers were on the other bays i may have damaged them etc etc, so he could not sign me off, other than that everything went fine lol

As i said, the last few weeks with the agency i have been putting them into tight bays, between trailers etc with no problems.

Still, not to worry, must be someone out there who will give us a chance full time. Just dont like the idea of being out of work.

Its a good job at Newark, don’t think they come any easier! It’s a shame you missed out, was it for a casual position?

I think that’s a bit harsh to be honest. Yes he’s right, but I assume you didn’t damage anything?

There are many situations out there where you might damage something… the key is how you respond to it. Do you recognise the danger and adjust your driving (or in your case, reversing) or do you keep going despite the risk?

Grundril thats a shame , was hoping for a bit of support on here since ady1 got banished from here
:bulb: was it bald matt that did your assesment ? after all hes so ace at going backwards

newark is now da supa depot   , covering the rubbish that goole and doncaster drivers refuse  to do,

Yesterday, there was nothing on the bays so i used all the room, just got my angles and position wrong  However, there was nothing about so i noted it and carried on.I was not sure weather i was required to “imagine” that there were trailers either side or not ? I agree, he was right in what he said, i was dissapointed but it just makes me want it even more

To be honest hollie, i was gutted :frowning: I know people slate them, but i see it as a job ! I think the assesors name was Shaun, really nice bloke to be honest, friendly and did put me at ease, he said there were no probs with my driving generally, he felt safe and that i was aware of positioning out on the road, observations and all the other good stuff but obviously my reverse let me down , but he would like to see me at the academy when i can reapply at the end of Feb…if there are still any jobs going there

A jobs a job and theres far worse out there than stobarts. Dont let the nerves get to you and good luck if you get another go.

I must be one of the 1% then. I would agree a job is a job and yes plenty of jobs are worse than Stobarts but then that still doesn’t make it a good place to work just means other places aren’t as good. Having said that a lot of places are certainly a lot better to work for! My experience wasn’t a good one so I would say if you like working for zero pay for 2 weeks + go ahead. There excuse was taking on 400 drivers meant they couldn’t get everyones wages right■■? WTF absolute shambles!
