ERF starting up again?

who else has heard a rumour ?

I would doubt that , and even if so it would probably be the name only. Similar to the old BL marque MG, now owned by China. To resurrect an entire truck plant I think is a non starter

unless its an american or australian one…and has all the mod cons that a driver wants…toilet, shower.freezer etc…then its up against some stiff competition…but if it has a 180 gardner in it…it can be used as the
Naughty step motor.

As long as there…

Is a plentiful supply of railway sleepers for springs, horse hair for seats and various assorted sized cogs for gearboxes with random shift patterns, they’ll do fine.

Volvo, Scania, DAF and MAN (Roman as it was back then) destroyed UK truck building with products that were far superior in every way.

After my first drive in a brand new F10, I changed jobs because I couldn’t face sitting in an ERF all week again.

i ended up in a foden which was just as bad

The threat of driving those bloody things is possibly the only thing that will persuade EE drivers to leave the UK.

Been out of production for far to long, something like 16 years since the plant was closed.

Look at what the competition is like and the standard of modern trucks and I would think it highly unlikely.

On the other hand its do able, there are euro spec engines and transmissions freely available along with many other off the shelf components.

They could use the PACCAR MX engine and the AStronic transmission that DAF use (Eaton twin split an option of course) re badge and tweak an existing cab design and off we go.

I for one would love to see the marque back on British roads.

Funny you mention that, I passed a MAN/ERF garage being built earlier, the big sign on the place said MAN/ERF anyway, pretty sure in was Manchester/Stockport just off the M60.

I think it will only be badge engineering. It will be fun to see a good old Tang being given The ERF

It’s fake news off Facebook.

ERF was co-branded with MAN until about 2007 IIRC.

■■■■■■■ didn’t go to Euro V with HD engines, because neither ERF (MAN) or Paccar (Foden) would place firm orders for enough units to make it worthwhile.

BUT…

as Euro VI is to all intents and purposes now the global emissions standard and accepted by all markets except North America, ■■■■■■■ IS NOW developing a Euro VI product

■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ … -heavyduty

combine that with this

and you’ve got a unique proprietary driveline to 21st Century standards.

MAN’s reputation in the UK was tarnished by those dreadful EGR engine issues, so it would be a chance to start again with a fresh sheet of paper.

If I was CEO of MAN (UK), I’d seriously consider it. Whether Munich would allow it would be another matter…

I wonder where the rumour started? the original gaffers motor!

We couldn’t do that to them. Classed as war crimes

I’d love to see it happen but i can’t see it.
Having said that they would just be MAN’s in all but badge so you might as well buy a MAN [emoji57]
Thing is, unlike the olden days trucks are bought/leased by accountants who really know nor care about how good or suitable a truck is, it all comes down to who will offer the best deal on the day. So a new start up is going to find it impossible to sell their wares to the big players as they just couldn’t compete with all the established manufacturers.
A shame it all went wrong years ago but that’s how it is.

I drive the latest MANs (17 and 67 plates) and I like them, would I care if it said MAN or ERF on the front… Nope, couldn’t care less…

The latest MAN cab and chassis with a 500+hp ■■■■■■■ with a decent gearbox - take my money.
ERF certainly could not be described as top of the range but the “fun” in driving them was a ■■■■■■■ engine that pulled like a train . I had an EC11 380 with a 16 speed box and it would happily keep up with anything of a similar hp running at the same weights and the higher the weight the better they pulled .
A nice fleet spec around 450 hp low , single sleeper cab would look well in the various supermarket liveries with readily available panels and parts could be a winner for them as they will be bought on price not spec .
Never say never.

I’d order one today ,I’ve even been on to ■■■■■■■ only last week try to organise an X12 to buy .

I didn’t mind driving them one bit. I had an A series, which admittedly I nearly died in one on a very very cold winters night stretched out across the seats and engine cover, having succumbed to Hypothermia and was taken to hospital.
But the two B series factory sleepers (with night heaters!) that I drove were good, reliable and comfortable, with the added bonus of having the best brakes on any truck I have driven…up to now. and as stated the EC11 was more than capable. No, I wouldnt want one of those old designs now, but new off the line with all mod cons? hmmm, maybe.

I am with you on the B & C Series with ■■■■■■■ and Fuller or ETS

I wasn’t far of hypothermia one winter’s night on the M1, bloody A series Gardner did its usual of dropping a valve and i sat in that sodding cab in freezing fog from about 1am till near enough 7am when the Spanish Dodge wrecker arrived rattling and puffing, yes he’d dropped a bloody valve too :unamused: about a mile from getting to me.

Sat in the Dodge with the wrecker driver, it was slightly less freezing in there, about 2 hours later one of my oppos turned up in a B series and he dragged the trailer and me back to the depot some 2.5 hours away, i could barely move by then and probably only cos i was a kid of 24 or so that i recovered so quickly.

I agree though, i’d gladly have a day cabbed B series or Sed Ack 401 on my current job so long as it had a decent ■■■■■■■ under the bonnet and a gearbox worth the name.

I’d love to see the old names make a comeback, good chance where i work they’d be keen enough so long as the back up with 24 hour service…the lack of which saw the death of the Brit makers in the first place…was there.

The foreign motors weren’t any better, but their back up and forward thinking ethos and dealers re servicing leasing etc were miles ahead.

Spent many a happy hour in my ERF with it’s eton twin splitter!
