ERF starting up again?

Spent many a happy hour in my ERF with it’s eton twin splitter!

Was that the posh version?

The latest MAN cab and chassis with a 500+hp ■■■■■■■ with a decent gearbox - take my money.
ERF certainly could not be described as top of the range but the “fun” in driving them was a ■■■■■■■ engine that pulled like a train . I had an EC11 380 with a 16 speed box and it would happily keep up with anything of a similar hp running at the same weights and the higher the weight the better they pulled .
A nice fleet spec around 450 hp low , single sleeper cab would look well in the various supermarket liveries with readily available panels and parts could be a winner for them as they will be bought on price not spec .
Never say never.

The 380s ok it’s the 16 speed that’s the problem too much loss of speed changing down uphill over the twin splitter ,the difference is the equivalent to having far less horses .

eh? or should I say A?

Boiling your balls in hot tar would be preferable to driving anything ERF had to offer. Rolls Eagle 265, ■■■■■■■ 265 E8, ■■■■■■■ L10, EC11 325, ■■■■■■■ E14 320, Gaydner 300 all with variations of ■■■■■ gearbox’s, none could pull the skin off a rice pudding. From my days at JR…until that is they gave me an F10 C23 AVG…happy then…

Didn’t know EC 11 did a 325, I had an F 10 that didn’t have that much power, in fact I’ve never heard of a 299 f10 engine outpulling a ■■■■■■■■ E14!
suppose the f10 did have a synchromesh gearbox that any idiot could use, lol

My mistake L10 325. F10s came in various flavours from 10 turbo six moniker 253hp to later 300hp with the EDC version at 320, would depend which one you had. Low powered by todays standards but still sublime to drive over any ERF of the same era.

Now now Andrew!
My F88 was a 290 and boy could that pull, but it was never going to outpull the big cam ■■■■■■■ powered trucks with the same BHP

Cant help it  , an OVLOV fan through and through
I have to admit though, plating my old F7 (Lucky 7) at 36.5T or…possibly Unlucky 7 after id finished with it was a tad optimistic… :grimacing:

Trukkertone:
who else has heard a rumour ?

Not me, but if they’re still owned by MAN, the new ones will either be rebadged MANs or knock-down MANs similar to the VW trucks sold in Brazil. Or perhaps they’re chasing the overseas market where ERF and the ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ driveline was popular and remains so because of American trucks. Can’t see it reviving in this country.

I wonder if South Africa is involved, looking on there form of Truck Trader I see a EC15 ■■■■■■■ powered 6 x 4 tractor unit that was not sold in the U.K. but was presumably made in S Africa after the MAN takeover.the vehicle is priced at £9000.

According to this man Definitely not, I emailed this morning and asked !
Thanks for your e-mail.

As far as I am aware there are no plans to revamp the ERF badge but I thank you for contacting us and your interest.

Wouldn’t he be under an NDA if they were planning a launch campaign though?

They showed the prototype of that truck at Truckfest South West…I remember photographing it for Trucking back in the day. The giveaway was that the cab sat a little higher on the chassis than normal, and it had ‘Made in RSA’ badges on the cab doors. The ERF Society may still have a copy of the pic that I took, as I lent them the original for copying for their archive.

ERF also did a similar vehicle but with a different steer-axle position for Australia (the chassis looked more like an old-school American cab-over), where it as going to be sold as a Western Star and operate at high GTWs. I saw that grinding around the MIRA circuit when I was there doing something else…photography strictly forbidden.

Anyone remember the massive law suit between Merc and MAN over ERF?

Merc took Western Star over after ERF had been sold to Western Star, and unknown to anyone except the very top brass at ERF, there was a massive hole in the ERF company accounts…which only came to light after ERF was sold to MAN.

Red faces all round: and the end for ERF as the newly-opened factory had to go.

A sad end for the last independent truck maker in the UK…but totally self-inflicted by a bullying management IMO.
