ERF 'European' (1975)

Wow - I thought I might be the only one who noticed the Scirocco! As a long time owner (17 years) of a Mk 2 Scirocco Storm (now deceased) my heart took a leap! Judging by the wheels I’d say it’s a Scala.

Sorry to take you away from the ERF European thread - but as a matter of interest and excuse my ignorance did Beresford Transport of Tunstall run any of these ERFs? I seem to recall that one driver, who I only remember as George, drove one. Coincidentally to Switzerland as his regular run.

Yes indeed! You are correct in thinking that Beresford ran one on European work; plus a subbie (Albert Dale) ran another one in Beresford colours on Swiss work, as you say. They also ran fifteen 5MW-cabbed ERFs, only one of which was LHD. Robert

Have another look at this pic. Cookie rang me up this morning to point out that you can see the ring-feed for a Joost-style draw-bar coupling at the back; plus the turntable seems to be absent and what might be a ballast cage is perched on the chassis. As this unit had been used for hauling heavy machinery and plant it seems quite likely that this had been a ballasted tractor. This is what I love about this forum: the constant sharp eyes of observers who pick up details! Robert

Just a quick note on Swiss number plates, they belong to the person or company not the vehicle. I have 2, one on my car and one on my bike. So if I sell my car I keep the plate and put it on my new one informing the local STVA (like the DVLA).

Many thanks for that reminder, Jarvy, which I had forgotten. The system is the same in Belgium. Cheers, Robert

I’ve found out a bit more about M. Knopfli AG. They are still in production, specialising in transmissions for heavy plant, marine engines and power stations.

Ditto ERFIM, the Swiss ERF importer. They ceased in 1998. My correspondent knew the boss and is doing some research for me - watch this space!

That explains it then,i never knew that ! As robert said thanks for clarifying that.

The remaining ERF was sold on along with the collectors other vehicles, after his death. At the moment the trail has gone completely cold so it was either scrapped or is rotting in a barn somewhere! Robert

Had a look on the map, it’s actually on the other side of the street from a firm where I’d sometimes tipped…haven’t been there for ages now, but could pop into their yard if I’m there…mind you, could take some more years before I’m actually there again…

Had another look at the tractor unit, if it was used in ballasted form wouldn’t be better of when it was a double drive then? Only reason I can think of why they used a 4x2 is because of the shorter wheelbase and therefore better on cutting hairpins…?

Less cut in with a ballast tractor and a drawbar trailer than an artic in addition to the drive axle capacity weight advantages.

Hazy pic of Vermeulen’s 05-17-FB.

Found a new pic of the Groen unit (16-37-FB) online. Robert

That makes interesting reading! I notice the NGC is high on speed but not so high on fuel. The SA does well! Robert

Looks like ■■■■■■■ had finished with reg HNV 59N as its been un signwritten and the ■■■■■■■ sign has been taken off the top of the cab. I wonder if this was taken at Beech’s garage prior to the sale to pountains ■■
