The Foden 15 litre cat 450 we had would come in from France weighing 50 tonne plus and go up High Wycombe bank on the m40 in top gear , not so much speed but plenty of torque.
My old f16 would pull top gear on any long gradients fully loaded with just the occasional half gear split, same as my MAN 19/462 with the 17 litre V10. Not really much between them in power/torque but the exhaust rumble from the V10 MAN was just sublime…
780 hp Volvo ,that’ll do it

310hp in a 26t. Loaded front to back with metal things. Didn’t slow down at all down the M6. On the A5 it’ll lose power even with very light things on.

30litre Isuzu V10. With 600 horses and heap and heaps of torque
Naturally aspirated this thing will have a very flat torque curve but very much doubt it produces heaps of torque. Twin turbos and an intercooler would be a different matter but this thing would most likely be better suited to a gen set or marine engine…

There’s no replacement for displacement ,it’s not just about horsepower.
Yep, a variation on ‘there ain’t no substitute for cubic inches’

V8 r 620…mine loves em …
mine pishes it too and we’ve an R730 and Volvo 750 as well
what windy hill?
the problem with too much power is? You’ve to be responsible with it!
unfortunately you’ll get some Richard head pulling out from lane two to three because you’ve too many Christmas tree lights on the front!
R620 V8 doesn’t drop a gear fully loaded

Switch logic reckoned that even fully freighted there wasn’t a motorway hill in Britain that he couldn’t climb on the limiter. 700+ gee gees leaves me inclined to believe it.
Yup that is indeed true. The only hill that slowed it was Rhuallt Hill on A55.

Cheers 3 wheeler, thats the kiddie.
In a just world that would be the heir to proper Gardners.

That’s the truth , had the pleasure of using an R500 for about 6 months, several years ago, came from a 4 series 470, thought that such a small jump in BHP wouldn’t really be anything to write home about, but with 16ltrs on tap, and a manual gearbox, that would chew most hills, I’m not saying it would flat stick them, but to only drop half a cog, and lose only 5 k’s, made Britain feel very flat. Shame when It was replaced by an R420, with opticruise

Plus having a real gearbox such as a Eaton ts or fuller and not a synchromesh ■■■■■ actually keeps the speed up better like having more horses would .

Tell the EU to do one then put an 18 speed Fuller with the 620 or 730 Scania V8.Sorted.

Oh yes. the Twin Splitter. Many many years ago, I drove an MAN 362 fitted with a twin splitter. A good mate of mine, and regular running buddy, had an F12 Globetrotter rated at 360 bhp, He could not keep with me on any hill, partly due to the twin splitter being so quick through the gears, compared to the 12 speed syncro in the Volvo.
Much banter on the CB about the sloth some Swede
That MAN did go well, and no limiters to spoil the party either, would cruise at 65mph with out breaking a sweat
I do feel sorry for the lads starting these days, to not get the oportunity to use gearboxes such as the Eaton or Fuller in anger, is an experience missed out on. The rapid and clutchless changes, is something that modern autos still haven’t caught up with. The art of the driver to be able to make these gearboxes sing, made those drivers the true professionals of the transport industry, along with the dark art of roping and sheeting, and for My own selfish reasons, I’ll include stripping tilts aswell. We learned of the older experienced guys and each other, no classroom was needed. You rarely had to roll your sheets up alone, or rope and sheet a load on your own, another driver would always help, and in this process, knowledge was exchanged. The same applied to stripping or building a Tilt, which maybe apparent was more My bag of fish

Too true, Dan, one of my favourite sayings. As the owner of a 4.6 V8 R/Rover.

Has DSG boxes ever been fitted to trucks, they change amazingly fast, probably quicker than constant mesh crash, they have them in tractors (agric) and you can even change pulling a plough. they have them in some cars VW, Skoda, but I have never heard them being used in trucks.
I think the iShift is the closest you’ll get to a DSG.

You can get the dual clutch I shift.

Yes i understood the twin clutch had been trialed, didn’t realise you could spec one yet…that should be as fast changing as a twin split, hope its as reliable as one…

I think they’ve been a list option for about a year, but I think they have a hefty price tag.

I know some of us bang on about the Twin Splitter, but they were a seriously quick shift. Pre select the next gear on the toggle switch fitted on the gear stick, then simply break torque by lifting of the throttle, then imeadiatly put the power back on, and the gear is already changed Its taken you longer to read the sentence in red, than the gear change took to complete. The gear changes requiring a move of the gear stick itself, were only limited by how quick you could blip the throttle and move the stick. Awesome
