do they exist? not for heavy haulage i mean general haulage - You could sit on the limiter fully loaded up any hill on motorway or trunk road take on “windy hill” for example with out dropping down a gear or dropping down on speed/revs? what bhp would you need?
I ask on occasions some very “powerful” sounding trucks sometimes it been a V8 have purposely tried to overtake me on a hill guessing thinking they have the power - they have the speed on the flat but loose it on the hill reduced to 40mph crawl.
sometimes you just get the impression that the other driver feels they dont need to sit behind you, they pull out as your hitting the hill thinking they can overtake in their 900000bhp v32 supermegaspaceeXXLglobetrottingmagnum with some bad boy stacks to boot…
it just annoys me, fair enough you got the top speed but would it kill you to wait till after the hill to jump to warp 9?
Had a MAN 500 V8 with full Load Wine 95 up the Brenner from Italy . The F16 were running anywhy just on low reps to keep fuel down, but was running very well with that. Full Trottle didnt bring much in Speed and Power but Fuel would have gone up dramatically,as some proofed
So,Stay calm and safe Fuel
Realistically a fully freighted 40 tonner isn’t going to climb any decent hill in top gear. It’s then just a question of the more torque the engine provides the less downshifts it will need and the faster it will climb by being able to turn a higher comparable gear.
maybe a bit off topic, but what engines do coaches have ?. even when im running light they seem to accelerate and fly past fully
loaded with punters, which must be a fair weight, { I know there not limited to 56. } its the acceleration im on about.

Can’t belive this thread, so what is so wrong about someone loaded wanting to keep his revs up, backing off up hill to stay behind even if you can’t get past is fine, so long as you don’t bulk anyone, get a life man.

Often in the 360-450bhp range and usually between 9-11 litres although Scania are fitting the 13-litre to some two-axle 18t GVW coaches.
The most powerful coaches out there are those run by Ellisons of St Helens, who do many Premier League teams. Most are over 500bhp, either 13-litre DAF or 12.4(?)-litre MAN. Some double-deckers of other firms are also around 500bhp.
Many coaches also have full-auto gearboxes like buses, which when combined with a 400bhp (or more) engine means that performance off the mark is rapid.

normally about 12 litres, 360-510 bhp. The B13 was a beast of an engine.
Switch logic reckoned that even fully freighted there wasn’t a motorway hill in Britain that he couldn’t climb on the limiter. 700+ gee gees leaves me inclined to believe it.
Punchy Dan:
There’s no replacement for displacement ,it’s not just about horsepower.
Is the correct answer, makes easy torque and easy torque means effortless pulling power.
Anyone got a link to details of that Isuzu 30 litre V10 (IIRC) tractor unit please, naturally aspirated running some 600hp i believe, now that would make short work of pulling out on busy roundabouts, make short work of just about anything, give me eye teeth for one of those.

If I had the money Juddian, I’d sort that for you coupled to an Arsetronic gearbox!

In me best Albert Steptoe voice…‘‘you horrible little bleeder’’…
Seriously the Japanese are far too clever/sensible to fit an unfit for purpose pile of dung like that into a proper working vehicle, anyway the torque that Isuzu pushes out would probably rip the thing apart so yes, stick one in and i’ll tape the gearbox detonation and post it on the tube.
I followed one of our scottish cousins last week over the 66 , i was empty he had a full load of timber on , nowhere on the 66 could i pass him , he was in a 750 Volvo which i eventually saw when i got alongside at Scotch corner, got to admit i was quite envious of the way the thing pulled
