i’ll trade you…
i always try to be as quiet as possible when repairing things on the services, even to the point of moving vehicles to a better spot when having to strip wheels off and such.
now stop ■■■■■■■ up the wheel so i don’t have to change brake chambers and the like in puddles of ■■■■.
I’ll second that, I find it bad just cleaning the reversing camera and rear lights; dirty (zb)astards

can anybody tell me why some drivers feel it necessary to run there engines 20 mins before they depart, it aint hard to see that others drivers are still asleep and maybe disturbed, or maybe they just couldnt give a toss bout there fellow drivers , as this seems to becoming common place, is it everyman for himself now or is there still a bit of comradeship out there?
Dont know myself I find it rather rather nice to start the engine 15 or 20 minutes ahead of departure makes doing my morning pre trip and brake tests that much easier with the system actually building air. So how long does a proper pre trip take ? here it is about 15 minutes give or take a couple. May be some people are actually doing their pre trips proper rather than just creations on paper.
If you are the regular driver, it doesn’t take 15mins a day to do the checks. I’ve got to drop some wood off at my house this morning so I made a manual entry of working time last night on todays tacho so it’ll be a 5min check and i’m gone

You don’t even need a walk round check at all if you’re the regular driver of it. Only thing you need to do is make sure the pin is still locked and check the barn doors are still closed/load okay. All this lights/tyres/oil stuff is just BS. You wouldn’t check those on your car every time you drove it so there’s no need on a truck either.

If I have been on a night out it is what Rob said and maybe a quick look underneath to make sure there are no puddles of oil or coolant. Last night I parked in the yard at 21:15 and will be back in today at 14:00, no one will have used the unit in between and everything was fins when I left it so checks will take a couple of minutes, then a check of the trailer when I couple to one.
The problem with doing a pre shift 15, is VOSA want to see idle time on your tacho.
If they pull you and don’t see sufficient pre shift idle time, they will asume you have just stuck your card in, drove off & you haven’t done your checks

There is always time on my tacho before I start driving, at least 5 or 10 minutes.
If they pull you in and there is no time at the start of the trip and when they check the vehicle they find nothing wrong with it, what are they going to do you for?
we have to show 15 mins on the card for the vehicle and a trailer…Vosa`s reccomendation
The reason fridges run in the winter is probably because the temperature is much lower than it is outside, for eg; flowers run at +3…so if the temp outside is -20…you have to run the fridge…and those moaning…are probably not fridge drivers…Sainsburys insist on +7 for all of their produce and fruit.
I got into the habit years ago of firing the engine up first thing…at least i will have heat and power…
one of our planners pulled me in to the office to complain about my idling, especially when on nights out, so i told him that drivers today have to run many things off the battery…such as fridge, dvd player, computer, tv, kettle, night heater etc, etc…so he told me to stop it…so next night out, i did what he said…low and behold, flat batteries…so the next day he asked what went wrong, i told him that after an evening watching a few dvd``s, a couple of cups of tea, night heater on, i used to run the engine for 15 minutes before i went to bed, that night i didnt…so i asked him what was the cheapest…a call out ( £300 )…or a gallon of diesel…he hasnt bothered me since…

Thats the best way dont argue with them just show them …

Exactly, RECOMENDATION is the word, they recommend it, it’s not a requirement too spend 15 Min’s on it. What do you check that takes 15 Min’s? Even on driving test it only takes 2/3 Min’s and I passed ok. On test I was told to drop my trailer and pull away from it then couple up to it as if it’s a new trailer I’ve never seen before, went through it all and did the walk round check as required and it took all of 2/3 Min’s, even if you include the unit in the check’s I don’t see what you need too check that will take another 12/13 Min’s? Even if you check EVERYTHING that’s listed on the VOSA drivers check sheet we have on the wall in our tea room it takes no longer than 6/7 Min’s at a slow pace!
You fill in the rest of the time drinking tea/coffee and worrying about the day. Well, I do the tea/coffee bit but there’s a large number of colleagues that can do the worrying (like when they’re following me and on bonus).
As starbucks a holic may concur, the Genadarmes had a purge on foreign drivers pulling off in the morning with no vehicle check time shown on the tacho,im sure some brit drivers would wind them up,as when i got stopped they would take their mood out on me,or not had relations with their wife the night before, they would have a purge on anything they could nick you for, then go for months with no hassle and dramas.
I taught myself to speak the languages, soon pick them up while sat next to them in the restaurants. If you start with childrens books, then slowly work up,learn some vocab, verbs and nouns, and kind if join up the dots, save getting the food order wrong, with a meal that you do not like to eat.

And there you have it, the simplest way of checking the rear of the truck, you can bet your bottom dollar that someone following you will tell you if you have a light out, why check them yourself, enjoy an extra coffee, let others worry about your soft tyre
I find it annoying that just as I’m about to nod off, either a pair of foreigners start chain smoking and waffling non-stop for the next 45mins beside my cab, or someone has to take 6 shunts to change a trailer, with blaring stereo.
