End of the road for the Axor

Replaced all our Axors with Volvo FM…

Best thing they ever did… 1-2mpg more in same driving.

(Supermarket)

A lot of the tipper firms round here run Axor’s as they can’t get the Actros with a Manual anymore, They seem to work hard enough, just a touch small.

I’m amazed with your somewhat interesting views on trucks you think the FM is any better tbh, I’d have expected you to moan at anyone driving less than a Scania 164 Topline…

I like my trucks unlike most drivers, I assume. Tbh anything would do for me except things like axors, stralis(not had a go in the newer ones), renaults, hino, anything with a day cab etc. I’d be happy in a little fm rather than an axor doing supermarket work-as I’ve said before toplines are for top drivers & I ain’t one…

You’re wrong in that most drivers don’t like trucks, steering wheel attendants don’t like trucks because the job is purely a wage packet and they have no pride or interest in doing the job right, or getting the best from the machinery they are using.

Luckily we all like different things, you seem to like top spec Swedish sleeper stuff and there’s nothing wrong with that, i prefer things that involve me more, are a bit smaller for nipping in and out of without having to abseil down a bloody ladder, and in tight spaces those day cabs with windows all round you hate really come into their own.

This is only my opinion here…but those who take a pride in trying to be decent lorry drivers prefer a machine they have to drive, and then make it drive well, often that pride they have seen in their fathers or others whos values, skills and decency they respected and admired and they wanted to emulate.

There’s no skill involved in jumping into a super dooper lorry that does everything, just stick it in drive and steer it down the middle lane of the motorway passing everything, a fairly intelligent chimp could manage that.

But to take a basic old school lorry (which can be brand spanking new) and make it perform to the best of its design, whilst getting the best economy from it whilst being as mechanically sympathetic as possible to prolonging its service life, that takes skill, and honing those skills gives pride in a job done well.

Each to their own, we all like different things and good job too, be a boring place if we were all cloned with identical wants etc.

It was just an assumption as most don’t seem to care what they drive, it’s more about the money, how you’re treated, hours etc. You’re right in saying each to their own but to me personally the axor has never ticked any boxes(hence me starting this thread). I’d class myself as a steering wheel attendant partly because of the modern auto kit given to me by the gaffer, I have no say in what I want(or anything else for that matter) so… I don’t really like whats become of the job but I still really like my trucks amongst other things, maybe that’s what keeps me going

I’ve just walked away from a scania R480 topline with microwave, fridge freezer, coffee maker etc for an iveco stralis day cab doing 2 boring trunk runs a day to Witney.
It’s better money and only 8 hours a day or less, will I be happier? Time will tell, I’ll probably fall out of the piece crap on the A40 anyway when it shakes me out of my seat.

Well bloody done FB, when you total up the hours you spend at home instead of in just another tin can with a different badge your flabber will be gasted.

I live in my lorry pretty much all week, mon till sat lunchtime, (5 days weeks are a luxary), then come home for a day and a half then back out, but your saying that i should ask my gov for a narrow cab axor and give up my current motor because having a big motor makes me a knob?

Juddian:
Yet again i find meself bewildered, does anyone here have any priorities in their search for good work, such as good pay, fair hours, mutual rspect and of course terms and conditions.

Drivers prepared to dump what was presumably a decent job because they took away the Audi and gave them a Honda?

No wonder the jobs getting worse.

Up until about 10 years ago when it finally got redecorated there was a poignant message written on the wall of the outside bog of the been there for ever transport cafe at Maple Cross, threads like this often bring it back, i can still recall the words so writ.

''this new breed of driver are effin useless, take ‘em off the motorway they’re effin lost, give ‘em a big motor and £2.50 (shows how long it was there) an hour and they’re like a puppy with two tails, signed ex driver thank f…’’

Not my words but sometimes i know where the author was coming from, anyone here own up to writing it all those years ago?

Slightly irrelevant to the topic posted, although I agree with the thrust of your sentiment. BUT. Were truck drivers talking about trucks which is ok isnt it?..

Anyway the AXOR…Worst truck on the road even worse than an Iveco. There`s not one decent thing to say about the blooming things. Truly awful in every respect.

Hardly, i don’t think anyone’s saying anything of the sort.

FB has given up a job that he worked all hours at, and presumably had to sleep away often, for another job that seems to have shortened his working day by up to 7 hours and given him an increase in pay and he gets home every night.

Congrats must be in order for that move, i know when i used to work all hours sent that i’d have been heartily pleased to get such a job change, indeed when my chances have come i’ve snatched their hands off.

The vehicle involved is really of no consequence, the job away was a big un, the day job motor is a day or rest cab of some sort, seems fair to me.

Lets be honest about our industry, too many blokes are doing the work of 2 blokes for one weeks pay, or doing the hours of 2 weeks for one weeks pay.
It isn’t going to change anytime soon, and its been going on far too long IMO, the toothless WTD has little effect as those who want to continue simply work it to suit, drivers and employers.

FB seems to have found a job that gets him out of it, good luck to him its a big step in the right direction, i hope it works out.

You reciting that past comment back, says to me that you do have an issue.

It really ■■■■■■ me off when the subject of drivers having big motors comes up, why shouldnt you expect to have a decent motor if you work hard and live in the truck all week.

OK so you’re ■■■■■■ off, and i already answered above, so i can’t help how you feel.

I drive a 58 plate Actros, don’t love it, don’t hate it. It’s maybe a little over specced for night trunking but I’m not complaining. Pulls ok, stops ok, turns ok, job done. I would love a top spec, top of the range motor, but this things well looked after and clean. Soon to be replaced with Axors (parked next to mine in the pic) or DAF CF’s

Would you not prefer a DAF cf to an axor…?

Pimpdaddy:

not arsed to be honest, good money, home every night. If I ever start tramping again I might get picky about what motor I’m living in but for this type of work I couldn’t give a monkeys. Plus it’s not a case of what I prefer, it’s a case of what Mr Bossman decides I’m getting. He calls the shots, not me.

Pimpdaddy:
Would you not prefer a DAF cf to an axor…?

Not a chance.

Pimpdaddy:

Not driven an axor but a cf is a fine machine. If i had to tramp in narrow cab motor that would be the one i’d pick, 4x2 with a 9t front axle and a zf manual, perfect.

IME the Axor has far better ground clearance than a CF.

My 6t sprinter parked next to his bigger brother . A Tesco AXOR . :open_mouth:

Anyone else have trouble focusing through the screen on the Axor just before dawn? I’m OK if I look out the side window but looking through the windscreen in certain light conditions really makes my eyes boggle :open_mouth:
