Our drivers are very good though I reckon I’m the best leader (boss) they’ve ever had.
I do all the worst jobs, I do the worst shifts, I’ll wash the truck if they want to go home
I ask them if they are ok doing xyz I never tell them they have to do anything.
I currently have 2 people waiting for jobs, rather than just have a waiting list they have both bin down here, they have both bin out with another driver for a day (I paid them) they are both aware of our plans and they know they’ll have a job within 12 months.
When we had a BBQ a couple of weeks ago all drivers & families came plus 1 of the new drivers came as well so he is made to feel part of our team already.
When I employed my 1st person, I was told by a friend “work with what you’ve got not against it” build the work around the employees not the employees round the work, IMO sound advice, has worked for me for the last 30 years (Thanks Tony Fletcher)

Good on you sir, I hope the goodwill shown to your employees is returned in kind. Thats the main reason I prefer to do work for small companies.
Well Im coming to the conclusion that if I can’t find the work locally that fits into my family situation ( working nights ) then the only thing for me is to get a smart car and travel the distance required and go tramping for a week…
Yes its a big sacrifice not to see my kids for 5 days but to earn a wedge of money, then they can have all the finder things in life…
And before anyone asks …No Im not relocating now as my boy has just got into junior school thats been awarded one of the best in the UK and I want him to have a better education that I got

giving them a reasonable deal means a lot, trouble is if your offer is bettered they will just go elsewhere, a lot of companies local to us offer £7-7.50 C2 and £8.50 for C1 The way I look at it is do I really want someone who values themselves at £7 driving my truck, I want my drivers clean tidy and respectful to everyone, I do not want them to feel stressed or unhappy in their work, I do want them to take 45/46 minutes break I do not want them taking 47 minutes and I do not want them on their phone.
I have set rules don’t break tacho rules, the speed limit or the wagon and we will get on just fine, I think if you set the bench quite high you’ll get high quality staff, in our previous business we stated please only apply for this position if you intend to stay for 30 years or until retirement whichever the sooner, our average employee stayed 8 years which I believe is pretty good for a small business.
8.50 an hour are you a generous soul, double it and you might get good staff
They pay more at macdonalds for flippin burgers.
Pay peanuts and you get …
Bet your office staff(the wife) aint on bloody peanut wages eh

The trouble is that the vast majority of the decent, professional and intelligent drivers already have their stall set up elsewhere and are quite happy with the conditions where they are. It’s like the agency game - all agencies want the best drivers but they can rarely get any because they’re already ‘in’ somewhere on a good number and aren’t interested in jumping ship. You’ll be experiencing much of the same as employers which is why you’re finding yourselves only attracting time-wasters and the dregs of society.
Nail on the head. Let’s face it, anyone who knows what they’re about is sorted & it would only be companies going bankrupt that would release hard chargers on to the labour market or if they’re being messed about.
I’m an owner driver, I can’t afford to match agency money year round. I think some blokes forget the mechanics, grand a week? I’d love to earn a grand a week but money isn’t my primary motivation for going to work, lame I know.
Yes a grand a week because I know how to fix them and you dont.
And as nobody has wanted to pay to train apprentices for years we are a scarce resource(ones who know what the hell they are doing anyway) so its down to supply and demand.
About time I been at this game 40 years and now its my turn to make some money.
Last time I had an apprentice was 1996 so now you pay for skilled men because there are very few left.

You mean waitrose .More shopkeepers trying to be hauliers

To many pen pushers and no experience.
Something like yourself
Its strange to read comments from the likes of Silver Surfer and Burnley Si amongst others, regarding either a lack of interest in there vacancies, or being let down at the last minute after having offered someone a job from this site. As someone who as replied to adverts on here and other sites(jobcentreplus etc), l can say from the other side of the fence l find a lack of response and not enough info regarding t’s & c’s or area the jobs in a problem.
My favourite is when an advert tells us that its an excellent salary but then fails to tell us what it is, or when calling them they refuse to discuss the salary. I once travelled 110 miles round trip for an interview and the minute salary etc was discussed it wasn’t for me. Could have saved me time and money by being upfront to start with. Haven’t done it since.

Aye why can’t people just say what they mean & not lie. On a positive note, my third attempt at employing someone off here seems to have paned out & his first £750 went in today.

No, I don’t think it’s for him to be fair. I hope he gets his break though, sounds up for it.

Flat heavy general work. The new guy is holding steady. I’ll probly do more in a month or two if anyone wants to PM me numbers or wants a bit of casual at the weekend. Brum.
