The last four have all been a recommendation, three from existing employees, the other was a lad doing a bit of yard work until he could get a driving job. Touch wood, they’ve all been OK.
I do anything not to advertise, 100 phone calls and digging out the diamond from the coal is nigh on impossible.
However, once we do get them, they do tend to stay, the job’s not difficult, varied, pay’s average for the area, but with good perks. The last two that left from this depot both retired, one after 22 years, one after 25 years.
All you can do is keep going until you find a decent one.

not a chance of that here, had 2 applications not 1 phone call, paying £1.60ph more than the bigger companies and £25 n/o which is the best around here, no london desent motor ffs what more can i do
The trouble is that the vast majority of the decent, professional and intelligent drivers already have their stall set up elsewhere and are quite happy with the conditions where they are. It’s like the agency game - all agencies want the best drivers but they can rarely get any because they’re already ‘in’ somewhere on a good number and aren’t interested in jumping ship. You’ll be experiencing much of the same as employers which is why you’re finding yourselves only attracting time-wasters and the dregs of society.
TBH burnely-si, it’s been around two years since I have put an ad in, all been recommendation since.
Speaking to another haulier that I’ve dealt with for over 30 years, his guy that provides his agency drivers says that he’s turned down 130 requests for drivers in one week, he just can’t get them. Guess it’s a busy time for agency to cover holidays, but generally it should be countered by August being a bit quieter - well it is in my world.
It makes you wonder if there is going to be increased pressure on driver supply come September?
Very few manners around nowadays so expecting them is a little naive. Look what happens when people apply for jobs, once upon a time you would at least receive a polite letter declining your application or even a return phone call but nowadays they are too rude to even give you consideration. Expecting this to be different when it is the other way round, well, there you have it.

I agree with the sentiment here but very few drivers send, or indeed are willing to send a CV - even if they can write and spell - and the ones who do put the effort in to really try and find a job generally, in my experience, garner a similar polite response.

I’m a new driver on class 1 but at 41 yrs old I’m a bit old school. I am starting work with someone from this forum in a few weeks, they have offered me a fair package and are giving me a start which I respect them for. Since accepting their offer I have had another 2 company’s offer me work 1 of which even tried to barter a deal with me to start with him. Both offered better money but I think letting someone down especially at such short notice is disrespectful. Them yung uns nowadays eh.
That’s because you have integrity mate & that’s all a man ever has in this world at the end of the day, without your word, you’re no better than the pig that roots around in the ■■■■ if you ask me.
It’s how people have been raised by their parents as well, I’m crippled sometimes as my parents almost raised me too right. I sometimes feel I would like to be more of a ■■■■ but then I think, no I’m stand up & I’m happy with that.

Nail on the head. Let’s face it, anyone who knows what they’re about is sorted & it would only be companies going bankrupt that would release hard chargers on to the labour market or if they’re being messed about.
I’m an owner driver, I can’t afford to match agency money year round. I think some blokes forget the mechanics, grand a week? I’d love to earn a grand a week but money isn’t my primary motivation for going to work, lame I know.

Well I know but if you go around thinking EVERYONE is a ■■■■ then you’ve got a pretty sad life ain’t you. I know there’s lots of ■■■■■ around but there are nice people out there…& I love meeting them.
One bloke told me recently his car broke down in rural Ireland & a bloke on a quad bike rocked up, recovered his motor, fixed the sump & dropped it back to his hotel for 200 euro, I mean god bless that man, I don’t believe in god but god bless him anyway.
If that happened over here, you’d probly get spat at.
totally agree, had one start last monday, begged to be paid friday, rather than work week in hand as he had no food in, loaded trailer fri pm and no word since , monday morning 7am had to call customer and tell them, load is still her and I have no one to deliver it as I am driving holiday cover, that went down well, driver no longer answers phone, still living the dream
Well, I’m relocating to the midlands if any of you need a driver! References no problem! Would like to stay where I am but it’s too far[DISAPPOINTED FACE]

Maybe but you won’t get a look in without one where i am.
I have several, still can’t get a look in anything I’m qualified to do:(

If you’re looking for people it may help to list where you’re based and what sort of work you do, eg. pallets on a curtainsider, flats, boxes etc.
Birmingham, I did have an ad on the jobs section of this site but I think they get auto deleted after a few weeks.

We are the same. Absolutely boils my ■■■■, basically I’m never taking a driver on & planning them work for day 1 ever again.
They can come out with me for the day or I’ll send them home the moment they turn up & tell em to come back tomorrow after I owe them for a days non work.

I understand where you are both coming from. I was in a situation a few years ago where I left a job and had no savings and a mortgage to pay. Having the money at end of week was helpful but I’m not the type to back out of a agreement leaving someone in the lurch.
