So we’re going to lose one of the big advantages of electric cars, the virtual elimination of noise pollution from vehicles because of ■■■■■■■ diddies who can’t be trusted to walk the streets on their own. It would have been a simple thing for the boffins to come up with a workable solution for those with sight issues. People who try to cross the roads without using their eyes deserve to be flattened in my book, anti-social ■■■■■■■!
When I was a kid I had lollipop sticks in my bike spokes [emoji23]
Got to protect these cyclists with headphones from themselves these days.
Elderly, infirm, poorly sighted, raspberry ripples and children are just an afterthought.
To be fair white noise don’t sound to bad, but I would prefer ‘brown noise’ for the humour aspect.
Did some brown noise experiments when I was younger, got me nan to shart herself once but may have just been a coincidence. I was a very naughty child.

Objection, Your Honour !
There is nothing wrong with my sight or hearing but on 2 separate occasions now I’m come close to being flattened by silent electric cars suddenly reversing out of spaces in car parks. Unless you’re specifically looking at every vehicle’s reversing lights as you walk past them all, how are you going to know to avoid them? Fortunately the low speed involved caused nothing more than a minor knock to my leg and an extremely embarrassed and apologetic driver, but it is a valid issue. For any ICE car you would of course hear the engine running in advance and be forewarned. I’m not convinced that “white noise” is the answer though : what if it’s a windy day?
Before someone chimes in with “why didn’t you use the footpath, dummy?” - there wasn’t one!

Good point and keeping a reversing bleeper would be eminently sensible. It hacks me off that a very small minority of people have managed to lobby successfully to get this through under the noses of the general populace. Another example of the nanny state.
The article points out one of the groups of muppets likely to be hit are cyclists listening to music with headphones in… Pray tell why are they cycling in busy urban environments with headphones in?
It’s illegal even in vehicles in some countries, Switzerland I think is one.
As a biker who removes the baffles from the exhaust, I don’t see the problem. A vehicle needs to make a loud noise so that duff pedestrians and motorists realise you’re there.
“Loud pipes save lifes”
I am old enough to remember the turbine F1 car and you couldn’t hear that car approaching at speed .
I have also moved stuff for Tesla cars and when they move all you can hear is tyre noise .
The green cross code that many learnt as youngsters was STOP LOOK LISTEN .
If one of those no longer works the risks increase . If it is the one that applies because the other cannot be applied for various reasons then the risks become unacceptable.

Maybe we used stop, look and listen because you had no option but to hear any noise emitted. And people still step off the pavement without looking. The turbine car didn’t catch on though, did it? There’s obviously going to be a crossover period when the mixture of electric and ICE vehicles is likely to present a risk but when everything is electric people will adapt to the different situation. For the daft of hearing it wouldn’t be difficult to equip dafties with a wee app on their mobile phones to tell them when a car is coming so they can continue to step out in front of it!

Noisy barsteward! I’d crush your bike for that. In the fullness of time all bikes will be on the leccy too so you’ll have to do something like this…

Bloody rich kids with lollipops… we only had folded cardboard, but you had to make sure they were on the right side, or yer bloody tyre went down.
WHIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

They are already trialling a noise solution for electric bikes… youtube.com/watch?v=0UotZ_ZLB5A

“The Nanny State” ?
Always interfering!
Speed limits? Telling us which side of the road to drive on? Checking whether cars have brakes?
Always sticking it’s nose in!

Ah now Mr F! I couldn’t disagree with any of your quoted examples, all perfectly sensible! I did suggest the boffins could, without too much trouble, come up with an alternative solution that would allow all of us who currently endure traffic noise, the joy of experiencing it’s passing, whilst offering an inaudible warning for the less able in our society. Remember that example from a couple of days ago where the motorcyclist who had the green light but didn’t help himself and just didn’t bother to look until it was too late? Dafties will still be run over! Can you imagine how different our towns and cities could be? I had you down as a probable ally in this noise abatement debate…

OK. We’ll see if we can agree that some sort of noise is necessary, but not an annoying one? The more clues there are to what is happening around us is good isn’t it? Including some noise. No need for 99 decibels of bleeper or open exhausts I’d agree, but I don’t like the idea of silent vehicles.
And it’s not just to protect idiots with headphones, we all benefit from early warning of a vehicle moving behind a badly parked van or approaching from around a corner when we’re on foot.

I love loud pipes ND so I’m not gonna argue too hard here, but to play Devils advocate then surely if “loud pipes save lives” they’d be fitted pointing forwards!

Everything in it’s place please. Open pipes shaking your internal organs at a race track, fine. Outside my house when I’m having a quiet cup of tea (or summat) in the garden? No.
Towns centres, again no, sound but not excessive noise.

Loud pipes are good if the engine makes a nice sound, but a Honda Civic or Vauxhall Corsa will never make music like a twin cam Ford or Alfa Romeo/FIAT/Lancia, same with Harleys, they should all be fitted with noise cancelling exhausts, but Ducatis should have amplifiers. Scania V8s with straight through pipes sound like a washing machine full of nuts and bolts, they make a much nicer sound through a free flow silencer.
Electric cars should have a choice of exhaust sounds so you can choose one that best suits your mood, the purr of an inline 6 when you’re cruising down a nice open road and the roar of an Audi Quattro S2 when you’re in a hurry.
