Electric car noise

“The Nanny State” ?
Always interfering!
Speed limits? Telling us which side of the road to drive on? Checking whether cars have brakes?
Always sticking it’s nose in!

Ah now Mr F! I couldn’t disagree with any of your quoted examples, all perfectly sensible! I did suggest the boffins could, without too much trouble, come up with an alternative solution that would allow all of us who currently endure traffic noise, the joy of experiencing it’s passing, whilst offering an inaudible warning for the less able in our society. Remember that example from a couple of days ago where the motorcyclist who had the green light but didn’t help himself and just didn’t bother to look until it was too late? Dafties will still be run over! Can you imagine how different our towns and cities could be? I had you down as a probable ally in this noise abatement debate… :grimacing:

OK. We’ll see if we can agree that some sort of noise is necessary, but not an annoying one? The more clues there are to what is happening around us is good isn’t it? Including some noise. No need for 99 decibels of bleeper or open exhausts I’d agree, but I don’t like the idea of silent vehicles.
And it’s not just to protect idiots with headphones, we all benefit from early warning of a vehicle moving behind a badly parked van or approaching from around a corner when we’re on foot.

I think the technology available to us could remove the need for any noise at all. Some kind of on board transmitter sending out signals warning of the proximity of traffic to individual receivers worn by those who wished to use them. How does that sound? Pun not intended but I’ll leave it there! :grimacing:

I’m waiting for the Government Minister forced to declare they are a major shareholder in company making white noise machines for EV’s

somewhere on the steering wheel there should be a button which when pressed makes a gadget under the bonnet go beep beep , problem solved .

I encountered a Tesla a few weeks ago at a services on the M61 while making a brew standing at the side door of my van, I stepped back into what had been a vacant parking bay and WOW, a car had reversed into there without me hearing it! :open_mouth: I wondered then about the noise aspect (or lack of it) as milk floats and trolley busses etc always made plenty of mechanical noise and you could hear them easily enough?

Pete.

As a biker who removes the baffles from the exhaust, I don’t see the problem. A vehicle needs to make a loud noise so that duff pedestrians and motorists realise you’re there.

“Loud pipes save lifes”

I love loud pipes ND so I’m not gonna argue too hard here, but to play Devils advocate then surely if “loud pipes save lives” they’d be fitted pointing forwards!

Everything in it’s place please. Open pipes shaking your internal organs at a race track, fine. Outside my house when I’m having a quiet cup of tea (or summat) in the garden? No.
Towns centres, again no, sound but not excessive noise.

A mate of mine unfortunately hit an eight year old child with his Honda Fireblade on a country A road .
He was not speeding and was off throttle going around a bend .
The childs parents had been drinking all afternoon and decided to cross the road on a blind bend at dusk on an unlit road .
The child was killed instantly, my mate was cleared of any blame but the police and the judge at the inquest both agreed that if the motorbike had been on throttle or fitted with a noisey exhaust it would have alerted those around the bend .
Noise can save lives .
My mate who was in his fifties and a life long biker never rode again .

But this could be so much fun ! Imagine if you could choose what noise the car can make !! You could make it sound like an F1 car, make it burp as you drive, make it meow … the possibilities are endless !!!
