eBay satnav

Hi all, are they any Good? Do they last? For around £30 I’m thinking of taking a gamble, I’ve been using a car one for years and as we know they are ok but not ideal, thoughts please, which one do I choose,

A bit dearer at 70quid but type in trucktables and have a look at the truck nav,ive just got one and seems spot on and u can contact chris for any assistance, they are on ebay as well type in truck nav and have a look

Had the cheap £30 one.And been using it for last 2yrs in the UK & Europe…And i found it more than adequate for the job…I’ve just bought one of the trucktable ones…Reason being i found it to complicated too upgrade the maps on the cheaper unit…Build quality on them is ok too…Obviousely no good if you like live traffic though…As neither has it…I think your better of getting the trucktables one though…As he’s in the uk.And contactable too.

Thanks for the input lads, checking them out,

I’ve got a cheapo ebay sat nav. It’s better than you may think. But not perfect.

The negatives…
It takes a while to start up.
If it shuts itself off when the power’s off (ignition) it goes in to a sleep mode that it sometimes doesn’t come out of properly (no setting to tell it not to shut down when the ignition is off). I eventually found a socket that could supply a continuous 12v supply, so it’s on all the time, even with the ignition off - problem sorted.
I used it to play my own music, transmitted via the radio. Had to select the transmit option every time - before starting the sat nav software after booting. And the MP3 player takes an age to start up - and there’s no quick way to pause/play/skip while the main sat nav display is up (have to select it from a menu, and takes a while to bring the MP3 player screen up).
It feels a bit cheap, as do the accessories (12v power adaptor fell apart, and a thumb screw for the mount undid itself and got lost), but if I’d checked this more often it may not have happened.

Good points…
It’s cheap as chips!
Very well featured for the price.
The software is actually quite good.

I ran it side by side with the company’s Snooper costing almost ten times as much, and it was just about as good. In some ways better - such as the speed alerts, speed camera alerts, hazard alerts, etc.
Neither were perfect, or alerted me to some 7.5 limits, or low bridges. Both were equally psychotic with telling me to go down some tight roads/turns, and insisting i turn around rather than reroute. And both (the cheapo moreso) were sometimes hell bent on trying to direct me to turn around and take me back the way I’d come to go down a road that I’d already passed by (sometimes on purpose, sometimes because I’d missed a turn) rather than reroute me.
The cheapo insisted I do a tight left hairpin uphill in a village - sod that! And the expensive Snooper once tried to tell me to turn right instead of left - down a road where 200 meteres away there was a 13 foot low bridge (with a 15 foot trailer - bearing in mind the sat nav had been programmed with the vehicle weights and dimensions).
Neither are perfect. And as everybody says - you use them as an aid and guide. Don’t slavishly follow them - use your eyes and brain.
When I had both in the truck, I started to favour my own cheapo, because of the better speed/hazard alerts and playing MP3’s.

Mentioned before but bought a “Xgody” cheapo 7" screen sat nav (£36 delivered to door!!!) and over a year later still going strong and money well spent!!!

I want to know if you can install the PGPSW speed cameras on them, and how old are the maps?

I currently use a TT 5150 with free map updates for the life of the unit, with December being the last update so they are bang up to date, but I am having problems with the camera database at the moment. It is rumoured that TT are trying to stop the use of 3rd party poi’s, and this may be the case.

Ken.

i bought this one ebay.co.uk/itm/141679209199

does a great job although its advertised as free updates and i have no idea how to do that but its an excellent piece of kit and i would definitely recommend it.

And half the bumpf on that ad is ■■■■■■■■.

If you know how to do the updates on the other units, you don’t have to send the sd card back to update it. Plus theirs is an 8gb unit, so when it’s full, you have to delete stuff to add more stuff, unlike the sd card versions where you buy a bigger card. However, bear in mind that these Chinese jobbys are just tablets anyhow with pirated maps on them. You can buy them half of the advertised price on the ad, and they are the same. My guess is the Trucktables ones that people bang on about are sourced in China as well, so he will be making money out of it also.

You can buy these in bulk from a site called Alibaba, the more you buy the more you save, and if your adept at a computer, can do all of it yourself and sell them on. So what if you get the odd one back as knackered, if you sell 100 and at £70, and get 10% back, you still make a killing.

Plus the latest maps is ■■■■■■■■ too. Most of these are around 8-12 months behind TT and Garmin etc.

I have asked a question above, and you can be sure if I get the answer I seek, then I won’t be paying £70 for one. The op didn’t.

Ken.

has anyone on here managed to do a map update on their chinese satnav?

I just got the new trucktables sat nav from Chris on ebay, only got this one as i dropped the previous one which I’ve had 2+ years… can’t fault it for the price and it’s never put me wrong! I’d recommend one if you don’t want to be spending a fortune!

i had a cheap Chinese one a few years ago and the biggest problem I had with it was not being able to read the screen in sunlight . apparently something to do with the type of screen/display ■■? has this been sorted ? . also has as been mentioned already updating was a bit of a ball ache , but for the price, buy a later model every year if you cant cope without the very latest maps .

The new ones come with like a sun visor that fits around it, mine has the exact same menu’s and functions so easy to use for me… Just looks alot more modern regarding the maps

Nobody’s mentioned a man who sits in the second seat on a plane yet…

I am always cab hopping . My Xgody fell off of the windscreen and broke ,it worked well until then .It only cost £37.00 so not too bothered imagine if an expensive one broke though.
