Eaton Splitter box

albion1971:
Eaton for men. Auto’s for girls.

agree albion, sat in my MAN on a roundabout, nice clear gap appeared, hit the accelerator and the auto box said no,i pressed twice more and nothing,it suddenly came to life as the nice big gap closed, bloody auto box[before anyone says, it was not in neutral, lol]also got my first hgv experience on a seddon Atkinson strato with eaton splitter

The Eaton was good, but many of the more flexible and fast crash boxes of yor had their good points too, i’d be happy with almost any of the non synchro manual boxes again.

Infinitely preferable and satisfying to use almost any of them compared to ZF’s Arsetronic which i’m stuck with presently, which has to be driven in manual mode to make any decent smooth progress with especially at full weights, they call this junk progress, Jesus wept.

Would i turn the clock back to better days, you betcha, there’d be one hell of a driver shortage if Eatons Fullers and Fodens own boxes were the standard boxes now in use, and the roads would be far safer for it.

Did you mean an Eaton Splitter box? If so, this was a late '90s answer to Euro regulations: a disappointing synchromesh 12 or 16 speed 'box IMHO.

IF you meant the Eaton Twin-splitter box, which was a CONSTANT-MESH unit with three splits in each corner of the H-pattern giving 12 speeds; then this was (IMHO) probably the cleverest and most brilliant drivers’ box! You will find innumerable threads about this 'box on this forum alone; and countless more on the Old Timer’s forum - all of them running to tens of pages with stacks of information about how to use them, and how they work. I joyfully Twin-splitted my way round North Africa and the Middle-East so I’m not just bull-shining. Just search! To help you, I can remember one on this forum was called ‘Eaton Splitter Gearbox’; and one on the Old Timer’s was called 'Lorries with Eaton Twin-splitter ‘boxes’ Robert

PS I still preferred the 9-speed Fuller: best 'box ever!

I suspect I drive a twin splitter more often than anyone on here and even iam sick of hearing about them .

History and rightly so, could you imagine the current crop using one.

The clowns I work with can’t even couple up without smacking the back of the cab in.

On a more serious note it was like the 2.8i Capri good in its day crap today.

Agree with all of that.
Maybe I’ve got lazy but I would not like to go back to manuals now.
Price we pay for them is that a truck today is no different to a car to drive, hence no different skill sets needed (apart from maybe reversing) so we get the clowns you are on about.

My left knee has seen better days after driving with Fuller Gearbox’s and I was pleased to get a MAN with a comfort shift gearbox.
This is a manual gearbox with a button on the gearlever to operate the clutch.I think this is the best setup to have.
I now have a MAN with a auto gearbox and usually overide it and change manually using the stalk.
My company recon autos are more efficient for drivers who cant drive properly!
Maybe if they paid decent money they would not go through so many drivers and they would keep the decent ones.

Yeah the MAN comfort shift was blooming marvellous! They totally nailed it with that but then thought they could go one better and went totally auto. FAIL!

And how’d you work that out

Any discussion about the Eaton twin splutter usually has my brain wandering into homicidal (not homosexual) thoughts. I’m surprised these old chuffers don’t have them retroffited to their Rover 200’s or mobility scooters.

You can guarantee the next topic will be adventures stuck on Shap when drivers had to eat their own poop to survive.

Err could be because I have a lorry with one and also because my brother has some too of which I go and load most weeks .

Conor:
The Eaton Twin Split required patience to use it well otherwise you ended up in neutral if you tried to rush the gearchanges. Once you had mastered it it was a great gearbox that never required you to use the clutch at all apart from setting off and coming to a stop.

Here,here. Cracking piece of kit

Nah, I preferred the 13 speed Fuller box anyway, but being the driving God I am, they were both a piece of ■■■■ to me :sunglasses:
, I won’t bore the arses of you about David Browns, and Spicers I will spare you all that.
Yeh, I know, …you are all soooo disappointed
Maybe next time, I’m certain you cannot wait.

By the way I’m an amateur compared to Truckyboy

Haulemaster box? Even I can’t remember that, what kind of motor was that in?
I may have used one and can’t remember.
Took my Class1 in 79 in one of these babies  , it was an old motor even then.

It had a 2 speed axle, splitter, it was like a stick in a bucket, you didn’t select a gear, you just aimed for it and hoped for the best.

Tarmac duck:
How any body in there right mind could possibly consider that this gearbox comes close to modern I-shifts etc is beyond me. I have had the pleasure of a twin splitter in an ERF and simmarlily a 10 speed spicer in an Atki I now prefer an easy life. we rely on computers and electronics for so many things these days why not make the most of it.

why not take a big hammmmmer to all your computers and electronicals !

Did they fit Spicers in Atkis?
Unless it was specced to order of course.
I may be way off here, but I only remember them in later Leyland Roadtrains.

We had half a dozen SA 301s fitted with the 10spd spicer also 3 “C” Series ERFs as well

Ok fair do.s, I was wrong, but I only had experience with 401s, and B series.
