E petition to reduce working day

Anyone seen this e petition to reduce the working day for Hgv drivers from 15hrs to 12hrs.
I think it’s a good idea, but I know a lot will not agree with it.

Hi.
With todays traffic, leaving London friday night, trying to get back to Derbyshire/Yorkshire,you would be “Weekending” at L/Forest East. 15 hrs is Maximum, and only on certain days of your cycle, leave it alone !!. You will all soon be wanting a 35hr week !,if it is hard to scrape a crust at the present rules, how will it be when less hrs are worked.
Observation,20 lorries on a night out,at £20 ,+ car parks at £8.=£560… Where is that sort of money going to be found, less hrs.= more nights out for the contractor,be prepared to pay MORE,in the shops.

Not enough hours in the day in my eyes.

What would work better than this proposal is a minimum rest time when at base and to add that to the current regs

A minimum time of at base could be 12 hours which does not have to fit into a 24 hour period so a driver could do a 15 hour shift then take 12 off which 9 would count as a reduced daily rest as per the current regs but the driver would get 12 off as at base

The planners would then be forced to schedule runs more carefully if they wanted the driver to have the same start time each day

We managed quite well with 12.5 hour maximum back in log book days.

And no we didn’t all run bent as some would have you believe.

12 hours on and 12 hours rest is ok for me.

I quite agree, at this time I could do with an 8 day week!
Why do folk start driving then moan about the hrs?

12h tops for days/nights works well with me, trampers can do what they like…

You obviously have no idea of being an owner operator.

I have never been one to do overtime unless where ever I worked absolutely needed me too, I have always lived within my means (having a Mrs earning well helps  )
In the company I now work for I was asked to do a few Saturday mornings a month, fair enough then the boss discovered I had a dormant class 2 sitting on my licence, he kinda asked/talked me into taking my medical (over 45) and as an ex driver himself he warned it was no 9 to 5 job and to expect some 50+ hours a week up from my 37 1/1 hours :open_mouth: .
Do you know what? I dont even notice the hours, I average 2 hours a day overtime (time and a third) and at the minute a night out a week.
I have decided weekdays are work days and weekends (90% at least) are for me and my family, and I never thought it would work for me with my old mindset but I am thriving on it.
To reduce the hours just puts more strain on an industry that might just be starting to pick up, a foolish move.

The issue is not the fact a 15 hour day can be worked, it’s the fact that many (not all) companies EXPECT you to always work that where you legally can.

Interestingly, a few of the companies I’ve done runs for do not expect any more than 12 hours. It’s very rare (personally, never) you have to do more than 12…and they are amongst the best and most efficient outfits I’ve worked for.

The drivers that want max hours generally do so because they are working for a poor rate in the first place.

12 hours isnt a long enough day imo, 14 hours a day with 10 hours rest, 9.30 hours driving each day, why not keep it simple

Your correct, we look after and put our wagons away at the end of the day and help each other unload should anyone be bringing trucks back to the depot, this usually is close to an hour.
We try to get out the yard before the depot fully opens and get back as it closes so the wagons are not blocking the place up.
The longest day other than being out overnight has been 10hs.30ms and once then out 12hs 30ms and a night allowance but should we need more hours to get the job done its good to know they are available.

i think there should be some sort of difference in relation to what type of truck you are driving, if you are a tramper or night out with sleeper cab then ok 15 hrs, but if your a day driver then i think 12 hours is enough…

personally 12 hours a day is plenty for me…

If you don’t like the hours send your ticket back to Swansea and find a new career. Wish I could drive more then 11 hrs some days

I didn’t like the long hours so I changed my job. Now I work nights and sometimes I’m on my way home after six hours. Why anyone would voluntarily put in 15 hour shifts just to make up their crap hourly rate to a decent wage beats me.

Not everyone does it to make up crap hourly rates, some might be on a good or okay rate and feel its worth it and some like myself get time and a third then time and a half over standard hours and this makes it even more worth while.
I agree we shouldn’t be forced but at the end of the day our chosen profession is never going to be standard hours.
You wouldn’t see a priest winging he doesn’t want to do Sundays  and if you do tell him to be Rabbi and work Saturdays

People who are signing this petition obviously don’t need the money, unless you think you’ll earn the same money for less hours? Alternatively, if you can’t handle a 15 hour shift then get a job which doesn’t require it!

This e-petition hasn’t been thought through has it?

My understanding is that we are governed by EU legislation. They can talk about it all they want in parliament, it’s Brussels that call the shots.

I think that instead of DCPC drivers need to take a course in MTFU.
